| 1 E disse il Signore a Samuel: insino a quando piagnerai tu Saul, con ciò sia cosa ch' io l'abbia gittato via, che non sia re sopra Israel? Empi il corno tuo d'olio, e vieni; ch' io ti manderò ad Isai di Betleem, però che nelli suoi figliuoli io hoe provveduto a me re. | 1 The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you grieve over Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons." |
| 2 E disse Samuel: e come andrò io? Saul intenderà questo, e ucciderammi. E disse Iddio: torrai uno vitello dello armento nella tua mano, e dirai: io sono venuto a sacrificare a Dio. | 2 And Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me." And the LORD said, "Take a heifer with you, and say, I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.' |
| 3 E chiamerai Isai allo sacrificio, e io ti mostrerò che tu facci, e ugnerai qualunque io ti mostrerò. | 3 And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me him whom I name to you." |
| 4 E fece Samuel sì come Iddio gli avea detto. E venne in Betleem; e i maggiori della città, maravigliandosi, sì gli andarono incontro, e dissero: è ella pacifica la tua venuta? | 4 Samuel did what the LORD commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, "Do you come peaceably?" |
| 5 E disse: pacifica è; io son venuto a sacrificare; santificatevi, e venite meco, acciò ch' io faccia sacrificio. Onde santificò Isai e' suoi figliuoli, e chiamolli al sacrificio. | 5 And he said, "Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD; consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice." And he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice. |
| 6 Ed entrati loro, vide Eliab, e disse: egli è aguale nel cospetto di Dio il suo Cristo? | 6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, "Surely the LORD's anointed is before him." |
| 7 E disse Iddio a Samuel: non guardare il suo volto, nè l'altezza della sua statura; però ch' io l' hoe iscacciato, e non giudico secondo l' apparenza degli uomini; però che l'uomo vede queste cose le quali appaiono, ma Iddio vede il cuore. | 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the LORD sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart." |
| 8 E Isai chiamò Abinadab, e menollo dinanzi a Samuel; e Samuel disse (ad Isai): non ha eletto anco Dio nè anco questo. | 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one." |
| 9 E addusse [Isai] Samma, dello quale disse: questo non elesse lo Signore. | 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one." |
| 10 E menò Isai li suoi sette figliuoli dinanzi a Samuel, e disse Samuel ad Isai: non ha eletto lo Signore di questi. | 10 And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen these." |
| 11 E disse Samuel ad Isai: sono loro ancora compiuti i tuoi figliuoli? Il quale respuose: anche ce n'è uno piccolo, e pasce le pecore. E disse Samuel ad Isai manda e fal venire, pero chè non mangeremo insino a tanto che non sarà venuto. | 11 And Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all your sons here?" And he said, "There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep." And Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he comes here." |
| 12 Onde mandò, e fecelo venire; ed era rosso, e bello in aspetto, e bella faccia. E disse il Signore: istà suso, e ugnilo, però che questo si è desso. | 12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. And the LORD said, "Arise, anoint him; for this is he." |
| 13 E Samuel tolse il corno dell' olio, e unselo nel mezzo de' suoi fratelli; e lo spirito di Dio si dirizzò in David da quello dì inanzi. E Samuel si levò, e andossene in Ramata. | 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. |
| 14 E lo spirito di Dio si partì da Saul, e lo spirito maligno dal Signore vessava Saul. | 14 Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him. |
| 15 E dissero a lui li suoi servi: ecco che lo malo ispirito del Signore ti conturba. | 15 And Saul's servants said to him, "Behold now, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. |
| 16 Comanda, o nostro signore, che' servi tuoi, che sono dinanzi da te, cerchino per uno uomo che sappia bene sonare la citara, acciò che quando lo spirito di Dio malo ti vesserà, suoni con la sua mano, e più lietamente tu possi sofferire. | 16 Let our lord now command your servants, who are before you, to seek out a man who is skillful in playing the lyre; and when the evil spirit from God is upon you, he will play it, and you will be well." |
| 17 E Saul disse a' suoi servi: provedetemi d'uno che suoni bene, e menatelo a me. | 17 So Saul said to his servants, "Provide for me a man who can play well, and bring him to me." |
| 18 E respuose uno de' servi, e disse: io vidi il figliuolo di Isai di Betleem, il quale sa bene sonare, e di forza è fortissimo, e uomo battagliere, e prudente in parlare, e bello; ed è Iddio con esso lui. | 18 One of the young men answered, "Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence; and the LORD is with him." |
| 19 E Saul mandò messaggi ad Isai, dicendo: mandami il tuo figliuolo David il quale è nel pascolo. | 19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, "Send me David your son, who is with the sheep." |
| 20 E Isai tolse uno asino carico di pane, e uno vaso di vino, e uno capretto di capre; e mandolli per mano di David suo figliuolo a Saul. | 20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a skin of wine and a kid, and sent them by David his son to Saul. |
| 21 E David venne a Saul, e istette dinanzi a lui; ed egli l' amò troppo, e fu fatto suo scudiere. | 21 And David came to Saul, and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer. |
| 22 E Saul mandò dicendo ad Isai: istia David nel mio cospetto, però ch' egli hae trovato grazia negli occhi miei. | 22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, "Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight." |
| 23 E qualunque otta lo spirito di Dio reo vessava Saul, David tolleva la citara, e sonavala colla sua mano; e confortavasi Saul, e istava più lievemente, e partivasi lo spirito maligno. | 23 And whenever the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand; so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him. |
