| 16 Or se con giustizia e senza colpa avete eletto Abimelec a vostro re, se avete operato bene con Ierobaal e la sua casa, se avete ricompensati i benefizi di colui che combattè per voi | 16 "Now therefore, if you acted in good faith and honor when you made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him as his deeds deserved-- |

| 28 E Gaal figlio di Obed gridava: « Chi è Abimelec e che è Sichem da servire a lui? Non è egli il figlio di Ierobaal? Non ha costituito il suo servo Zebul come principe sopra gli uomini di Emor padre di Sichem? Perchè dunque dovremo servirgli? | 28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, "Who is Abimelech, and who are we of Shechem, that we should serve him? Did not the son of Jerubbaal and Zebul his officer serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem? Why then should we serve him? |
| 29 Oh! se qualcuno mi desse il governo di questo popolo, io leverei di mezzo Abimelec ». E fu detto ad Abimelec: « Raduna un esercito numeroso e vieni ». | 29 Would that this people were under my hand! then I would remove Abimelech. I would say to Abimelech, 'Increase your army, and come out.'" |

| 31 e di nascosto mandò messi che dicessero ad Abimelec: « Guarda che Gaal figlio di Obed è venuto in Sichem coi suoi fratelli, e solleva la città contro di te. | 31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech at Arumah, saying, "Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his kinsmen have come to Shechem, and they are stirring up the city against you. |
| 32 Levati adunque di notte colla gente che hai teco, e sta in agguato nella campagna; | 32 Now therefore, go by night, you and the men that are with you, and lie in wait in the fields. |
| 33 poi di gran mattino sul levar del sole, piomba sulla città, e quando egli colla sua gente uscirà contro di te, fagli quel che potrai ». | 33 Then in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, rise early and rush upon the city; and when he and the men that are with him come out against you, you may do to them as occasion offers." |
| 34 E Abimelec messosi in cammino di notte con tutto il suo esercito, pose insidie in quattro luoghi vicino a Sichem. | 34 And Abimelech and all the men that were with him rose up by night, and laid wait against Shechem in four companies. |
| 35 Or Gaal figlio di Obed, uscito fuori si fermò all'entrata della porta della città; allora Abimelec, con tutto il suo esercito uscì dagli agguati. | 35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city; and Abimelech and the men that were with him rose from the ambush. |
| 36 Veduta quella gente, Gaal disse a Zebul: « Ecco una moltitudine che scende dai monti ». | 37 « Ecco, ripigliò Gaal, una furba discende dalle più alte cime e una schiera vien per la strada che guarda la querce ». | 37 Gaal spoke again and said, "Look, men are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming from the direction of the Diviners' Oak." |
| 38 E Zebul gli disse: « Dov'è or la tua bocca colla quale dicevi: Chi è Abimelec per essere servito? Non è forse questo il popolo che tu disprezzavi? Go out now and fight with them." |

| 40 Il quale, inseguendolo mentre fuggiva, lo spinse nella città e uccise molti dei suoi fin sotto la porta della città; | 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him; and many fell wounded, up to the entrance of the gate. |

| 44 colla sua schiera, e poi assalì ed assediò la città, mentre le altre due schiere inseguivano gli avversari dispersi per la campagna. | 44 Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city, while the two companies rushed upon all who were in the fields and slew them. |
| 45 Abimelec, avendo combattuto contro la città per tutto quel giorno, la prese, ne uccise gli abitanti e la distrusse in guisa che fece seminare il sale. | 45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; he took the city, and killed the people that were in it; and he razed the city and sowed it with salt. |
| 46 A tal notizia quelli che abitavano nella torre di Sichem si ritirarono nel tempio del loro dio Berit, dove avevan fatto con lui alleanza, dalla quale aveva preso il nome quel luogo molto fortificato. | 46 When all the people of the Tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the stronghold of the house of El-berith. |

| 52 Abimelec, avanzatosi sotto la torre, combatteva valorosamente, e accostatosi alla porta tentava di appiccarvi il fuoco, | 52 And Abimelech came to the tower, and fought against it, and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire. |
| 53 quand'ecco una donna gettare di sopra un pezzo di macina che lo colpì nella testa e gli fracassò il cervello. | 53 And a certain woman threw an upper millstone upon Abimelech's head, and crushed his skull. |
| 54 Egli, chiamato subito il suo scudiere, gli disse: « Tira fuori la spada e uccidimi; chè non s'abbia a dire che sono stato ucciso da una donna ». L'altro ubbidì e l'uccise. | 54 Then he called hastily to the young man his armor-bearer, and said to him, "Draw your sword and kill me, lest men say of me, 'A woman killed him.'" And his young man thrust him through, and he died. |
| 55 Morto Abimelec, tutti gli uomini d'Israele che eran con lui se ne tornarono a casa. | 55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man to his home. |
| 56 Dìo rese ad Abimelec il male che egli aveva fatto contro suo padre, uccidendo i suoi settanta fratelli. | 56 Thus God requited the crime of Abimelech, which he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers; |
| 57 Così pure ai Sichemiti fu reso ciò che avevan fatto, e cadde sopra di loro la maledizione di loatam figlio di Ierobaal. | 57 and God also made all the wickedness of the men of Shechem fall back upon their heads, and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal. |
