| 1 - Quando uscirai in guerra contro i tuoi nemici, se vedrai cavalieri e carri, e l'esercito degli avversari più numeroso del tuo, non n'aver timore, perchè è con te il Signore Dio tuo che ti condusse via dall'Egitto. | 1 "When you go forth to war against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and an army larger than your own, you shall not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. |
| 2 All'avvicinarsi poi della battaglia, il sacerdote si porrà davanti all'esercito, e dirà alla moltitudine: | 2 And when you draw near to the battle, the priest shall come forward and speak to the people, |
| 3 - Ascolta, Israele. Voi attaccherete oggi battaglia co' vostri nemici. Non s'intimorisca il cuor vostro, non abbiate paura, non indietreggiate, non li temete. | 3 and shall say to them, 'Hear, O Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint; do not fear, or tremble, or be in dread of them; |
| 4 Perchè il Signore Dio vostro è in mezzo a voi, e combatterà con voi contro i nemici, per cavarvi dal pericolo. - | 4 for the LORD your God is he that goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.' |
| 5 Quindi, i capi di ciascuna schiera proclameranno, in guisa che tutti intendano: - V'è qualcuno che abbia fabbricato una casa nuova, e non l'abbia ancora abitata? Vada, e torni a casa sua; affinchè non muoia in guerra, ed un altro non v'abiti pel primo. | 5 Then the officers shall speak to the people, saying, 'What man is there that has built a new house and has not dedicated it? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man dedicate it. |
| 6 V'è qualcuno che abbia piantato una vigna, e questa non sia ancora al punto d'esser vendemmiata, e che tutti possan mangiarne? Vada, e torni a casa sua; acciò non abbia a morire in guerra, ed un altro non prenda il suo posto. | 6 And what man is there that has planted a vineyard and has not enjoyed its fruit? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man enjoy its fruit. |
| 7 V'è qualcuno che si sia fidanzato con una donna, e non l'abbia ancora sposata? Vada, e torni a casa sua; ch'e' non abbia a morire in battaglia, ed un altro la sposi. - | 7 And what man is there that has betrothed a wife and has not taken her? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man take her.' |
| 8 Ciò detto, aggiungeranno ancora e diranno alla gente: - V'è qualcuno che abbia paura, e gli tremi il cuore? Vada, e torni a casa sua, acciò non sia causa che anche i suoi fratelli s'impauriscano, come s'è impaurito lui. - | 8 And the officers shall speak further to the people, and say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go back to his house, lest the heart of his fellows melt as his heart.' |
| 9 Poi, quando i capi dell'esercito avranno finito di parlare, e si taceranno, ciascuno preparerà alla battaglia le sue schiere. | 9 And when the officers have made an end of speaking to the people, then commanders shall be appointed at the head of the people. |
| 10 Quando t'accosterai ad una città per espugnarla, prima le offrirai pace. | 10 "When you draw near to a city to fight against it, offer terms of peace to it. |
| 11 Se t'accoglierà, e ti aprirà le porte, tutta la popolazione che è in essa sarà salva, e ti sarà soggetta, sottoposta ad un tributo. | 11 And if its answer to you is peace and it opens to you, then all the people who are found in it shall do forced labor for you and shall serve you. |
| 12 Se poi non vorrà far teco alleanza, e ti moverà guerra, tu l'assedierai; | 12 But if it makes no peace with you, but makes war against you, then you shall besiege it; |
| 13 e quando il Signore Dio tuo te l'avrà data nelle mani, passerai a fil di spada tutt'i suoi maschi, | 13 and when the LORD your God gives it into your hand you shall put all its males to the sword, |
| 14 lasciando le donne, i bambini, gli animali, ed il resto che si trova nella città. Spartirai fra l'esercito tutta la preda, e mangerai della preda de' tuoi nemici che il Signore Dio tuo t'ha data in mano. | 14 but the women and the little ones, the cattle, and everything else in the city, all its spoil, you shall take as booty for yourselves; and you shall enjoy the spoil of your enemies, which the LORD your God has given you. |
| 15 Così farai di tutte le città che sono da te molto distanti, e non son di quelle che tu devi avere in possesso. | 15 Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far from you, which are not cities of the nations here. |
| 16 Perchè, di queste città che ti verranno date, non lascerai in vita nessuno, | 16 But in the cities of these peoples that the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes, |
| 17 e li passerai a fil di spada: l'Heteo, l'Amorreo, il Cananeo, il Ferezeo, l'Heveo ed il Jebuseo, come ti comandò il Signore Dio tuo, | 17 but you shall utterly destroy them, the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, as the LORD your God has commanded; |
| 18 acciò non v'abbiano ad insegnare a far tutte le abominevoli cose che hanno fatte essi co' loro dèi, e voi non pecchiate contro il Signore Dio vostro. | 18 that they may not teach you to do according to all their abominable practices which they have done in the service of their gods, and so to sin against the LORD your God. |
| 19 Quando assedierai per molto tempo una città, e la circonderai d'apparecchi per espugnarla, non taglierai gli alberi che danno frutti da mangiare, nè guasterai con le scuri la campagna all'intorno; perchè quello è legno, e non uomini che possano accrescere il numero dei combattenti contro di te. | 19 "When you besiege a city for a long time, making war against it in order to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them; for you may eat of them, but you shall not cut them down. Are the trees in the field men that they should be besieged by you? |
| 20 Se poi vi sono alberi non fruttiferi, selvatici, adatti per altri usi, tagliali, e servitene per le macchine, sinchè tu abbia presa la città che combatte contro di te. | 20 Only the trees which you know are not trees for food you may destroy and cut down that you may build siegeworks against the city that makes war with you, until it falls. |
