1 Now when they had walked through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they arrived at Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.	1 Toccando poi Anfipoli e Apollonia, arrivarono a Tessalonica, dove c’era una sinagoga ebraica.
2 Then Paul, according to custom, entered to them. And for three Sabbaths he disputed with them about the Scriptures,	2 Secondo le sue abitudini, Paolo vi si recò e per tre sabati consecutivi discusse con loro traendo argomento dalle Scritture.
3 interpreting and concluding that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise again from the dead, and that “this is the Jesus Christ, whom I am announcing to you.”	3 Le spiegava e allegava a provare che era necessario che il Messia soffrisse e poi risuscitasse da morte, concludendo: «È questi il Messia, quel Gesù che io vi sto annunziando».
4 And some of them believed and were joined to Paul and Silas, and a great number of these were from the worshipers and the Gentiles, and not a few were noble women.	4 Alcuni di essi sì lasciarono persuadere e guadagnare da Paolo e Sila, insieme con un bel numero di pagani credenti in Dio e non poche delle dame dell’alta società.
5 But the Jews, being jealous, and joining with certain evildoers among the common men, caused a disturbance, and they stirred up the city. And taking up a position near the house of Jason, they sought to lead them out to the people.	5 Ma i Giudei ingelositi, con l’aiuto di alcuni scellerati della piazza, organizzarono una dimostrazione e misero in subbuglio la città, poi fattisi sotto la casa di Giasone cercavano Paolo e Sila per condurli all’assemblea del popolo.
6 And when they had not found them, they dragged Jason and certain brothers to the rulers of the city, crying out: “For these are the ones who have stirred up the city. And they came here,	6 Non trovatili, trascinarono Giasone e alcuni fratelli dai politarchi, gridando: «Codesti sovvertitori del mondo sono arrivati anche qui
7 and Jason has received them. And all these men act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.”	7 e sono ospiti di Giasone. È tutta gente che agisce contro i decreti imperiali, perché dicono che c’è un altro imperatore, Gesù».
8 And they incited the people. And the rulers of the city, upon hearing these things,	8 Con tali parole riuscirono a incitar la folla e i politarchi,
9 and having received an explanation from Jason and the others, released them.	9 ma questi, ricevuta una garanzia da Giasone e dagli altri fratelli, li rilasciarono.
10 Yet truly, the brothers promptly sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea. And when they had arrived, they entered the synagogue of the Jews.	10 La stessa notte però i fratelli fecero partire Paolo e Sila per Berea, ed essi, appena arrivati, si recarono nella sinagoga ebraica.
11 But these were more noble than those who were at Thessalonica. They received the Word with all enthusiasm, daily examining the Scriptures to see if these things were so.	11 I Giudei di qui erano di idee più larghe di quelli di Tessalonica, tant'è vero che accolsero la parola con entusiasmo, anzi ogni giorno esaminavano sulla Scrittura se così stavano le cose.
12 And indeed, many believed among them, as well as not a few among the honorable Gentile men and women.	12 Così abbracciarono la fede molti di loro, e inoltre non poche distinte signore pagane e anche uomini.
13 Then, when the Jews of Thessalonica had realized that the Word of God was also preached by Paul at Beroea, they went there also, stirring up and disturbing the multitude.	13 Ma appena gli Ebrei di Tessalonica vennero a sapere che anche a Berea era stato annunziato da Paolo l’evangelo, si portarono anche lì per agitare e sommuovere la cittadinanza.
14 And then the brothers quickly sent Paul away, so that he might travel by sea. But Silas and Timothy remained there.	14 Stavolta però i fratelli fecero andar subito Paolo, perché continuasse il viaggio, fino al mare, e là restarono solo Sila e Timoteo.
15 Then those who were leading Paul brought him as far as Athens. And having received an order from him to Silas and Timothy, that they should come to him quickly, they set out.	15 Gli accompagnatori di Paolo lo condussero fino ad Atene, poi ne ripartirono con l’incarico di dire a Sila e Timoteo di raggiungerlo al più presto in quella città.
16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred up within him, seeing the city given over to idolatry.	16 Ad Atene, nell’attesa dei due, Paolo sentiva nell’animo uno sdegno profondo all’osservare che la città era piena di idoli.
17 And so, he was disputing with the Jews in the synagogue, and with the worshipers, and in public places, throughout each day, with whomever was there.	17 Passava perciò il tempo a discutere in sinagoga con gli Ebrei e con i credenti in Dio e nell’agorà tutti i giorni con chi gli capitava.
18 Now certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were arguing with him. And some were saying, “What does this sower of the Word want to say?” Yet others were saying, “He seems to be an announcer for new demons.” For he was announcing to them Jesus and the Resurrection.	18 Anche alcuni filosofi epicurei e stoici discutevano con lui, mentre altri dicevano: «Che cosa saprebbe dire codesto semi-analfabeta?» Altri invece, sentendolo annunziare Gesù e la risurrezione, dicevano: «Sembrerebbe un predicatore di divinità esotiche!»
19 And apprehending him, they brought him to the Areopagus, saying: “Are we able to know what this new doctrine is, about which you speak?	19 Allora lo presero e lo condussero innanzi all’areopago e lo interrogarono: «Potremmo sapere qual è la dottrina nuova che vai insegnando ?
20 For you bring certain new ideas to our ears. And so we would like to know what these things mean.”	20 Dal momento che tu ci annunzi cose strane, vogliamo sapere di che si tratta».
21 (Now all the Athenians, and arriving visitors, were occupying themselves with nothing other than speaking or hearing various new ideas.)	21 Gli Ateniesi in genere e gli stranieri ivi residenti a ogni altro passatempo preferivano questo: dire e ascoltare le ultime novità.
22 But Paul, standing in the middle of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are rather superstitious.	22 Paolo quindi, ritto in mezzo all’areopago, cominciò: «Ateniesi! Vedo in voi un gran timore degli dèi.
23 For as I was passing by and noticing your idols, I also found an altar, on which was written: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this is what I am preaching to you:	23 Passando infatti e osservando i vostri monumenti religiosi, ho trovato anche un’ara con la dedica “A un dio sconosciuto”. Ebbene, io vi voglio appunto annunziare quello che voi onorate senza conoscere.
24 the God who made the world and all that is in it, the One who is the Lord of heaven and earth, who does not live in temples made with hands.	24 Il Dio che ha creato il mondo e ciò che contiene, essendo Signore del cielo e della terra, non abita in templi materiali;
25 Neither is he served by the hands of men, as if in need of anything, since it is he who gives to all things life and breath and all else.	25 né può essere servito dalle nostre mani, come se avesse bisogno di qualcosa, egli che a tutti dà la vita, il respiro e ogni altro bene.
26 And he has made, out of one, every family of man: to live upon the face of the entire earth, determining the appointed seasons and the limits of their habitation,	26 Anzi è lui che da un solo uomo ha prodotto l’intero genere umano affinché popolasse tutta la terra, fissando nello spazio e nel tempo i limiti della loro vita.
27 so as to seek God, if perhaps they may consider him or find him, though he is not far from each one of us.	27 È per questo che essi cercano Dio, tentando di sentirlo e di afferrarlo, egli che davvero non è lontano da ciascuno di noi.
28 ‘For in him we live, and move, and exist.’ Just as some of your own poets have said. ‘For we are also of his family.’	28 Per opera sua infatti abbiamo vita, moto ed esistenza, come certuni dei vostri poeti hanno cantato: “Noi siamo ‘infatti della sua stirpe”.
29 Therefore, since we are of the family of God, we must not consider gold or silver or precious stones, or the engravings of art and of the imagination of man, to be a representation of what is Divine.	29 Ebbene, giacchè siamo della stirpe di; Dio, non dobbiamo ritenere che la divinità sia rassomigliabile a un blocco d’oro o d’argento o di sasso, scolpito dall’arte e dal genio umano.
30 And indeed, God, having looked down to see the ignorance of these times, has now announced to men that everyone everywhere should do penance.	30 Dio, dunque, dopo aver tollerato le epoche dell’ignoranza, al presente chiama il genere umano a un ravvedimento generale e universale.
31 For he has appointed a day on which he will judge the world in equity, through the man whom he has appointed, offering faith to all, by raising him from the dead.”	31 Poiché ha stabilito un giorno in cui giudicherà il mondo con giustizia per mezzo di un uomo da lui designato e accreditato davanti a tutti col risuscitarlo da morte...».
32 And when they had heard about the Resurrection of the dead, indeed, some were derisive, while others said, “We will listen to you about this again.”	32 All’udire parlare di risurrezione dei morti, parte si misero a beffarlo, parte dissero: «Su questo argomento ti ascolteremo un’altra volta».
33 So Paul departed from their midst.	33 Così Paolo dovette lasciare la loro assemblea.
34 Yet truly, certain men, adhering to him, did believe. Among these were also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.	34 Alcuni di loro, tuttavia, non vollero staccarsi da lui e abbracciarono la fede, tra cui Dionigi, l’areopagita, più una donna chiamata Damaris e altri ancora.
