Maccabaeus and his companions, under the Lord's guidance, restored the Temple and the city,1 Entretanto Macabeu e os seus companheiros, graças à protecção do Senhor, recobraram o templo e a cidade,
and pul ed down the altars erected by the foreigners in the market place, as wel as the shrines.2 demoliram os altares, que os estrangeiros, tinham levantado na praça pública, assim como os santuários (dos ídolos).
They purified the sanctuary and built another altar; then, striking fire from flints and using this fire, theyoffered the first sacrifice for two years, burning incense, lighting the lamps and setting out the loaves.3 Depois de terem purificado o templo, erigiram nele outro altar, e, tendo feito sair algumas faíscas de fogo de pedra, ofereceram sacrifícios, após uma interrupção de dois anos, e puseram o incenso, as lâmpadas, e os pães da proposição.
When they had done this, prostrating themselves on the ground, they implored the Lord never againto let them fal into such adversity, but if they should ever sin, to correct them with moderation and not to deliverthem over to blasphemous and barbarous nations.4 Feitas estas coisas, prostrados por terra, rogavam ao Senhor que não permitisse que tornassem a cair em tão grandes males, mas que, no caso de novamente pecarem, os castigasse com brandura e não os entregasse a homens ímpios e bárbaros.
This day of the purification of the Temple fell on the very day on which the Temple had been profanedby the foreigners, the twenty-fifth of the same month, Chislev.5 No dia em que o templo tinha sido profanado pelos estrangeiros, nesse mesmo foi purificado, no dia vinte e cinco do mês de Casleu.
They kept eight festal days with rejoicing, in the manner of the feast of Shelters, remembering how,not long before at the time of the feast of Shelters, they had been living in the mountains and caverns like wildbeasts.6 Celebraram esta festa com alegria durante oito dias, como a dos tabernáculos, lembrando-se de que, pouco tempo antes, tinham passado a solenidade dos tabernáculos nos montes e nas cavernas, como feras.
Then, carrying thyrsuses, leafy boughs and palms, they offered hymns to him who had brought thecleansing of his own holy place to a happy outcome.7 Pelo que levavam nas mãos tirsos, ramos verdes e palmas, e cantavam hinos em honra daquele que lhes tinha concedido a dita de purificar o seu templo.
They also decreed by public edict, ratified by vote, that the whole Jewish nation should celebratethose same days every year.8 E, por um decreto lavrado com o acordo de todos, mandaram a toda a nação judaica que celebrasse a festa anualmente naqueles mesmos dias.
Such were the circumstances attending the death of Antiochus styled Epiphanes.9 Tal foi o fim da vida de Antíoco, chamado Epífanes.
Our task now is to unfold the history of Antiochus Eupator, son of that godless man, and briefly torelate the evil effects of the wars.10 Agora vamos falar de Eupator, filho deste ímpio Antíoco, expondo resumidamente os males que sucederam durante as guerras.
On coming to the throne, this prince put at the head of affairs a certain Lysias, the general officercommanding Coele-Syria and Phoenicia,11 Quando começou a reinar, pôs à frente dos negócios do reino um certo Lísias, que nomeou também chefe militar supremo da Celesíria e da Fenícia.
whereas Ptolemy, known as Macron, and the first person to govern the Jews justly, had done hisbest to govern them peaceful y to make up for the wrongs inflicted on them in the past.12 Porque Ptolomeu, cognominado Macron, que foi o primeiro a observar a justiça para com os judeus, principalmente por causa do injusto tratamento praticado com eles, e a tentar governá-los pacificamente,
Denounced, in consequence, to Eupator by the Friends of the King, he heard himself cal ed traitor atevery turn: for having abandoned Cyprus, which had been entrusted to him by Philometer, for having gone overto Antiochus Epiphanes, and for having shed no lustre on his il ustrious office: he committed suicide by poisoninghimself.13 foi acusado disto na presença de Eupator pelos seus favoritos.
Gorgias now became general of the area; he maintained a force of mercenaries and a continualstate of war with the Jews.14 Ora Górgias, tornado chefe militar destas regiões, tomava consigo tropas estrangeiras e aproveitava todas as ocasiões para molestar os Judeus.
At the same time, the Idumaeans, who controlled important fortresses, were harassing the Jews, welcoming outlaws from Jerusalem and endeavouring to maintain a state of war.15 Por outra parte, os Idumeus, senhores de praças fortes, incomodavam os Judeus, recolhiam os que tinham sido expulsos de Jerusalém e buscavam ocasiões de fazer guerra (contra Judas).
Maccabaeus and his men, after making public supplication to God, entreating him to support them, began operations against the Idumaean fortresses.16 Entretanto os que andavam com Macabeu, tendo conjurado pelas suas orações o Senhor a que viesse em seu auxilio, atacaram as fortalezas dos Idumeus.
Vigorously pressing home their attack, they seized possession of these vantage points, beating offal who fought on the ramparts; they slaughtered al who fel into their hands, accounting for no fewer than twentythousand.17 Depois de vigorosos esforços, apoderaram-se daqueles lugares, rechaçaram os que combatiam sobre os muros e mataram os que se lhes puseram diante; entre todos passaram à espada não menos de vinte mil homens.
Nine thousand at least took refuge in two exceptional y strong towers with everything they needed towithstand a siege,18 Nove mil homens, pelo menos, refugiaram-se em duas fortalezas, onde tinham tudo o que era necessário para bem se defenderem.
whereupon, Maccabaeus left Simon and Joseph, with Zacchaeus and his forces, in sufficientnumbers to besiege them, and himself went off to other places requiring his attention.19 Macabeu deixou, para as expugnar, Simão e José, assim como Zaqueu e os seus companheiros, em número suficiente, e marchou em pessoa para onde as necessidades mais urgentes da guerra o chamavam.
But Simon's men were greedy for money and al owed themselves to be bribed by some of the menin the towers; accepting seventy thousand drachmas, they let a number of them escape.20 Mas os homens de Simão, levados da cobiça, foram subornados com dinheiro por alguns dos que estavam nas torres, e, tendo recebido setenta mil dracmas, deixaram escapar vários deles.
When Maccabaeus was told what had happened, he summoned the people's commanders andaccused the offenders of having sold their brothers for money by releasing their enemies to fight them.21 Quando chegou ao conhecimento de Macabeu o que se tinha passado, reunindo os príncipes do povo, acusou aqueles homens de terem vendido seus irmãos por dinheiro, deixando escapar os seus inimigos.
Having executed them as traitors, he at once proceeded to capture both towers.22 Mandou, pois, matar esses traidores e apoderou-se imediatamente das duas fortalezas.
Successful in all that he undertook by force of arms, in these two fortresses he slaughtered morethan twenty thousand men.23 Continuando a ser coroadas de êxito as suas empresas guerreiras, matou dentro destas duas fortalezas mais de vinte mil homens.
Timotheus, who had been beaten by the Jews once before, now assembled an enormous force ofmercenaries, mustering cavalry from Asia in considerable numbers, and soon appeared in Judaea, expecting toconquer it by force of arms.24 Porém Timóteo, que antes tinha sido vencido pelos Judeus, levando um exército de tropas estrangeiras e reunida muita cavalaria da Ásia, foi à Judeia para se tornar senhor dela pelas armas.
At his approach, Maccabaeus and his men made their supplications to God, sprinkling earth on theirheads and putting sackcloth round their waists.25 Ao mesmo tempo que vinha chegando, Macabeu e os seus companheiros, faziam oração ao Senhor, lançando terra sobre suas cabeças, tendo cingidos os seus rins de cilícios.
Prostrating themselves on the terrace before the altar, they begged him to support them and to showhimself the enemy of their enemies, the adversary of their adversaries, as the Law clearly states.26 Prostrados junto do altar pediram a Deus que lhes fosse favorável, que se declarasse inimigo de seus inimigos e adversário de seus adversários, como promete a lei.
After these prayers, they armed themselves and advanced a fair distance from the city, halting whenthey were close to the enemy.27 Tomadas as armas depois da oração, avançaram até muito longe da cidade e fizeram alto perto dos inimigos.
As the first light of dawn began to spread, the two sides joined battle, the one having as their pledgeof success and victory not only their own valour but their recourse to the Lord, the other making their own ardourtheir mainstay in the fight.28 Aos primeiros alvores do dia, travaram batalha os dois exércitos, tendo uns, além da sua coragem, o Senhor por garantia da vitória e bom êxito das suas armas, e indo os outros ao combate movidos apenas pela sua fogosidade.
When the battle was at its height, the enemy saw five magnificent men appear from heaven onhorses with golden bridles and put themselves at the head of the Jews;29 No maior ardor da peleja apareceram do céu aos inimigos cinco homens resplandecentes, sobre cavalos adornados de freios de ouro, que serviam de guia aos Judeus.
surrounding Maccabaeus and screening him with their own armour, they kept him unscathed, whilethey rained arrows and thunderbolts on the enemy until, blinded and confused, they scattered in completedisorder.30 Dois deles, tendo no meio de si Macabeu, cobrindo-o com suas armas, guardavam-no para que andasse sem risco da sua pessoa; lançavam dardos e raios, contra os Inimigos, que iam caindo feridos de cegueira e cheios de turbação.
Twenty thousand five hundred infantry and six hundred cavalry were slaughtered.31 Foram mortos vinte mil e quinhentos homens de pé e seiscentos cavaleiros.
Timotheus himself fled to a strongly guarded citadel cal ed Gezer, where Chaereas was incommand.32 Timóteo fugiu para Gazara, praça fortificada, de que era governador Quereias.
For four days Maccabaeus and his men eagerly besieged the fortress,33 Macabeu e os seus, alegres e ardorosos, sitiaram a praça durante quatro dias.
while the defenders, confident in the security of the place, hurled fearful blasphemies and godlessinsults at them.34 Os que estavam dentro, confiados na força da praça, blasfemavam sem medida e proferiam palavras abomináveis.
At daybreak on the fifth day, twenty young men of Maccabaeus' forces, fired with indignation at theblasphemies, manful y assaulted the wall, with wild courage cutting down everyone they encountered.35 Porém, amanhecendo o dia quinto, vinte jovens dos que estavam com Macabeu, irritados no seu Interior por causa destas blasfêmias, lançaram-se corajosamente aos muros, subiram acima deles, com um ardor intrépido, matando quantos se aproximavam.
Others, in a similar scaling operation, took the defenders in the rear, and set fire to the towers, lighting pyres on which they burned the blasphemers alive. The first, meanwhile, breaking open the gates, let therest of the army in and, at their head, captured the town.36 Subindo também outros, começaram a pôr fogo às torres e às portas, e acenderam fogueiras em que queimaram vivos aqueles blasfemadores; outros despedaçaram as portas, abriram caminho, fizeram entrar o resto do exército e apoderaram-se da cidade.
Timotheus had hidden in a storage-wel , but they kil ed him, with his brother Chaereas, andApol ophanes.37 Mataram Timóteo, que estava escondido numa cisterna; também mataram o seu irmão Quereias e Apolófanes.
When al this was over, with hymns and thanksgiving they blessed the Lord, who had shown suchgreat kindness to Israel and given them the victory.38 Realizada esta façanha, cantando hinos e cânticos bem-diziam ao Senhor, que tinha feito tão grandes coisas em Israel e lhes tinha dado a vitória.
