| 1 Queste cose dice il Signore: Che libello di ripudio è quello, con cui ho ripudiato la vostra madre? o chi è quel mio creditore, a cui io vi ho venduti? ecco, che voi per le vostre scelleraggini siete stati venduti, e per le vostre scelleraggini ho io ripudiata la madre vostra. | 1 Thus says the LORD: "Where is your mother's bill of divorce, with which I put her away? Or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities you were sold, and for your transgressions your mother was put away. |
| 2 Perocché io venni, e anima non vi era: chiamai, e non fu chi mi ascoltasse. E ella forse accorciata, ed è divenuta piccola la mano mia, talmente che io non possa redimere? o non è in me possanza per liberare? Ecco, che alla mia minaccia renderò deserto il mare, asciugherò i fiumi: marciranno senz'acqua i pesci, e periranno di sete. | 2 Why, when I came, was there no man? When I called, was there no one to answer? Is my hand shortened, that it cannot redeem? Or have I no power to deliver? Behold, by my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a desert; their fish stink for lack of water, and die of thirst. |
| 3 Vestirò a nero i cieli, e li cuoprirò di cilicio. | 3 I clothe the heavens with blackness, and make sackcloth their covering." |
| 4 Il Signore mi ha dato una lingua erudita, affinchè io sappia sostenere colla parola i caduti: egli al mattino mi tocca, tocca a me al mattino le orecchie, affinchè io l'ascolti come maestro. | 4 The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him that is weary. Morning by morning he wakens, he wakens my ear to hear as those who are taught. |
| 5 Il Signore Dio mi ha aperta l'orecchia, ed io non contraddico: non mi tiro indietro. | 5 The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I turned not backward. |
| 6 Ho dato il corpo mio a que', che mi percuotevano, e le mie guancie a que, che mi strappavan la barba: non ho ascoso il mio volto a quegli, che mi schernivano, e mi sputacchiavano. | 6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I hid not my face from shame and spitting. |
| 7 Il Signore Dio è mio aiuto, per questo io non son restato confuso: per questo ho renduta la mia faccia come selce durissima, e so, che io non rimarrò confuso. | 7 For the Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been confounded; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; |
| 8 Mi sta dappresso colui, che mi giustifica, chi sarà mio contraddittore? Stiamo insieme in giudizio, chi è il mio avversario? si accosti a me. | 8 he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. |
| 9 Ecco, che il Signore Dio è mio aiuto, chi è, che mi condanni? Ecco, che tutti (questi) saran consunti come un vestimento, il verme li mangerà. | 9 Behold, the Lord GOD helps me; who will declare me guilty? Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up. |
| 10 Chi è tra voi, che tema il signore, e ascolti la voce del suo servo? Chi cammina nelle tenebre, ed è senza luce, speri nel nome del Signore, e si appoggi al suo Dio. | 10 Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of his servant, who walks in darkness and has no light, yet trusts in the name of the LORD and relies upon his God? |
| 11 Voi tutti però, ecco, che accendete fuoco, siete in mezzo alle fiamme, camminate al lume del vostro fuoco, e delle fiamme accese da voi: dalla mano mia è stato a voi fatto questo; voi dormirete in mezzo ai dolori. | 11 Behold, all you who kindle a fire, who set brands alight. Walk by the light of your fire, and by the brands which you have kindled! This shall you have from my hand: you shall lie down in torment. |
