| 2 Betel aveva inviato Sarèzer alto ufficiale del re con i suoi uomini a supplicare il Signore | 2 Now the people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-melech and their men, to entreat the favor of the LORD, |
3 e a domandare ai sacerdoti addetti al tempio del Signore degli eserciti e ai profeti: "Devo io continuare a far lutto e astinenza nel quinto mese, come ho fatto in questi anni passati?".
| 3 and to ask the priests of the house of the LORD of hosts and the prophets, "Should I mourn and fast in the fifth month, as I have done for so many years?" |
| 4 Allora mi fu rivolta questa parola del Signore: | 4 Then the word of the LORD of hosts came to me; |
| 5 "Parla a tutto il popolo del paese e a tutti i sacerdoti e di' loro: Quando avete fatto digiuni e lamenti nel quinto e nel settimo mese per questi settant'anni, lo facevate forse per me? | 5 "Say to all the people of the land and the priests, When you fasted and mourned in the fifth month and in the seventh, for these seventy years, was it for me that you fasted? |
| 6 Quando avete mangiato e bevuto non lo facevate forse per voi? | 6 And when you eat and when you drink, do you not eat for yourselves and drink for yourselves? |
| 7 Non è questa forse la parola che vi proclamava il Signore per mezzo dei profeti del passato, quando Gerusalemme era ancora abitata e in pace ed erano abitate le città vicine e il Negheb e la pianura?". | 7 When Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, with her cities round about her, and the South and the lowland were inhabited, were not these the words which the LORD proclaimed by the former prophets?" |
| 8 Questa parola del Signore fu rivolta a Zaccaria: | 8 And the word of the LORD came to Zechariah, saying, |
| 9 "Ecco ciò che dice il Signore degli eserciti: Praticate la giustizia e la fedeltà; esercitate la pietà e la misericordia ciascuno verso il suo prossimo. | 9 "Thus says the LORD of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy each to his brother, |
| 10 Non frodate la vedova, l'orfano, il pellegrino, il misero e nessuno nel cuore trami il male contro il proprio fratello". | 10 do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart." |
| 11 Ma essi hanno rifiutato di ascoltarmi, mi hanno voltato le spalle, hanno indurito gli orecchi per non sentire. | 11 But they refused to hearken, and turned a stubborn shoulder, and stopped their ears that they might not hear. |

Così si accese un grande sdegno da parte del Signore degli eserciti. | 12 They made their hearts like adamant lest they should hear the law and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from the LORD of hosts. |
| 13 Come al suo chiamare essi non vollero dare ascolto, così quand'essi grideranno, io non li ascolterò, dice il Signore degli eserciti. | 13 "As I called, and they would not hear, so they called, and I would not hear," says the LORD of hosts, |
| 14 "Io li ho dispersi fra tutte quelle nazioni che essi non conoscevano e il paese si è desolato dietro di loro, senza che alcuno lo percorresse; la terra di delizie è stata ridotta a desolazione". | 14 "and I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they had not known. Thus the land they left was desolate, so that no one went to and fro, and the pleasant land was made desolate." |
