Il se fit apporter le Livre des mémoires, les Chroniques, et on en fit la lecture devant le roi. | 1 On that night the king could not sleep; and he gave orders to bring the book of memorable deeds, the chronicles, and they were read before the king. |
| 2 On tomba sur le passage où l’on racontait comment Mardochée avait dénoncé les deux eunuques du roi, Bigtan et Térech, les gardiens de la Porte qui avaient voulu assassiner le roi Assuérus. | 2 And it was found written how Mordecai had told about Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs, who guarded the threshold, and who had sought to lay hands upon King Ahasuerus. |
| 3 Le roi dit alors: "A-t-on fait quelque chose de spécial pour Mardochée? Lui a-t-on donné de l’avancement?” Les serviteurs du roi répondirent: "On n’a rien fait pour lui.” | 3 And the king said, "What honor or dignity has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?" The king's servants who attended him said, "Nothing has been done for him." |
| 4 Alors le roi dit: "Qui est dans la cour?” Et justement c’était Aman qui franchissait la cour extérieure du palais royal pour demander au roi de faire pendre Mardochée à la potence qu’il avait dressée pour lui. | 4 And the king said, "Who is in the court?" Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the king's palace to speak to the king about having Mordecai hanged on the gallows that he had prepared for him. |
| 5 Les serviteurs du roi répondirent: "C’est Aman qui est dans la cour.” Le roi dit: "Faites-le entrer.” | 5 So the king's servants told him, "Haman is there, standing in the court." And the king said, "Let him come in." |
| 6 Aman entra et le roi lui demanda: "Que peut-on faire pour un homme que le roi veut honorer?” Aman se dit en lui-même: "Quel autre que moi le roi pourrait-il bien honorer?” | 6 So Haman came in, and the king said to him, "What shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor?" And Haman said to himself, "Whom would the king delight to honor more than me?" |
| 7 Il répondit au roi: "Le roi veut-il honorer quelqu’un? | 7 and Haman said to the king, "For the man whom the king delights to honor, |
| 8 Qu’il fasse apporter un vêtement royal que le roi a porté, un cheval que le roi a monté et sur la tête duquel on a déjà placé une couronne royale. | 8 let royal robes be brought, which the king has worn, and the horse which the king has ridden, and on whose head a royal crown is set; |
| 9 Qu’on remette le vêtement et le cheval à l’un des principaux ministres du roi, qu’on en habille l’homme que le roi veut honorer, qu’on le fasse monter sur le cheval et qu’on le fasse promener à travers toute la ville. Quelqu’un criera devant lui: Voici ce que l’on fait à l’homme que le roi veut honorer.” | 9 and let the robes and the horse be handed over to one of the king's most noble princes; let him array the man whom the king delights to honor, and let him conduct the man on horseback through the open square of the city, proclaiming before him: 'Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.'" |
| 10 Le roi dit alors à Aman: "Dépêche-toi, prends ce vêtement et le cheval comme tu l’as dit, et fais tout cela pour Mardochée, le Juif, qui est assis à la porte du roi. N’oublie rien de ce que tu as dit.” | 10 Then the king said to Haman, "Make haste, take the robes and the horse, as you have said, and do so to Mordecai the Jew who sits at the king's gate. Leave out nothing that you have mentioned." |
| 11 Aman prit donc le vêtement et le cheval, il en fit revêtir Mardochée et le promena à cheval à travers la ville, et il proclamait devant lui: "Voici ce que l’on fait à l’homme que le roi veut honorer!” | 11 So Haman took the robes and the horse, and he arrayed Mordecai and made him ride through the open square of the city, proclaiming, "Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor." |
| 12 Puis Mardochée retourna à la Porte du roi, tandis qu’Aman rentrait chez lui précipitamment, honteux et la tête voilée. | 12 Then Mordecai returned to the king's gate. But Haman hurried to his house, mourning and with his head covered. |
| 13 Aman raconta en détail à sa femme Zérech et à tous ses amis ce qui venait de se passer. Ces hommes sages lui dirent, ainsi que sa femme Zérech: "Si Mardochée est de race juive et que tu as commencé de basculer, tu ne pourras rien contre lui. Tu tomberas devant lui.” | 13 And Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had befallen him. Then his wise men and his wife Zeresh said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of the Jewish people, you will not prevail against him but will surely fall before him." |
| 14 Ils parlaient encore lorsque les eunuques arrivèrent et prirent Aman avec eux pour le conduire au festin qu’Esther avait préparé. | 14 While they were yet talking with him, the king's eunuchs arrived and brought Haman in haste to the banquet that Esther had prepared. |
