1 Factum est autem post hæc, ut percuteret David Philisthiim, et humiliaret eos, et tolleret Geth et filias ejus de manu Philisthiim,1 After this David defeated the Philistines and subdued them. From the grip of the Philistines he wrestedGath and its dependencies.
2 percuteretque Moab, et fierent Moabitæ servi David, offerentes ei munera.2 He also defeated the Moabites; the Moabites became David's subjects and paid him tribute.
3 Eo tempore percussit David etiam Adarezer regem Soba regionis Hemath, quando perrexit ut dilataret imperium suum usque ad flumen Euphraten.3 David also defeated Hadadezer king of Zobah, which lies in the direction of Hamath, when the lattermounted an expedition to assert his rule on the River Euphrates.
4 Cepit ergo David mille quadrigas ejus, et septem millia equitum, ac viginti millia virorum peditum, subnervavitque omnes equos curruum, exceptis centum quadrigis, quas reservavit sibi.4 David captured one thousand chariots, seven thousand charioteers and twenty thousand foot soldiersfrom him; David hamstrung al the chariot teams, keeping only a hundred of them.
5 Supervenit autem et Syrus Damascenus, ut auxilium præberet Adarezer regi Soba : sed et hujus percussit David viginti duo millia virorum.5 The Aramaeans of Damascus came to the help of Hadadezer king of Zobah, but David kil ed twenty-two thousand of the Aramaeans.
6 Et posuit milites in Damasco, ut Syria quoque serviret sibi, et offerret munera. Adjuvitque eum Dominus in cunctis ad quæ perrexerat.6 David then imposed governors in Aram of Damascus, and the Aramaeans became David's subjectsand paid him tribute. Wherever David went, Yahweh gave him victory.
7 Tulit quoque David pharetras aureas, quas habuerant servi Adarezer, et attulit eas in Jerusalem.7 David took the golden shields carried by Hadadezer's guards and brought them to Jerusalem.
8 Necnon de Thebath et Chun urbibus Adarezer æris plurimum, de quo fecit Salomon mare æneum, et columnas, et vasa ænea.
8 From Tibhath and from Cun, towns belonging to Hadadezer, David captured a great quantity ofbronze, with which Solomon made the bronze Sea, the pil ars and the bronze implements.
9 Quod cum audisset Thou rex Hemath, percussisse videlicet David omnem exercitum Adarezer regis Soba,9 When Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer king of Zobah,
10 misit Adoram filium suum ad regem David, ut postularet ab eo pacem, et congratularetur ei quod percussisset et expugnasset Adarezer : adversarius quippe erat Thou Adarezer.10 he sent his son Hadoram to King David to greet him and to congratulate him on having made war onHadadezer and on having defeated him, since Hadadezer was at war with Tou. He also sent al sorts of objectsmade of gold, silver and bronze,
11 Sed et omnia vasa aurea, et argentea, et ænea consecravit David rex Domino, cum argento et auro quod tulerat ex universis gentibus, tam de Idumæa, et Moab, et filiis Ammon, quam de Philisthiim et Amalec.11 which King David also consecrated to Yahweh, as wel as the silver and gold which he had leviedfrom al the nations, from Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines and Amalek.
12 Abisai vero filius Sarviæ percussit Edom in valle Salinarum, decem et octo millia :12 Abishai son of Zeruiah defeated the Edomites in the Val ey of Salt -- eighteen thousand of them.
13 et constituit in Edom præsidium, ut serviret Idumæa David : salvavitque Dominus David in cunctis ad quæ perrexerat.13 He stationed garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David's subjects. Wherever Davidwent, Yahweh gave him victory.
14 Regnavit ergo David super universum Israël, et faciebat judicium atque justitiam cuncto populo suo.14 David ruled over all Israel, administering law and justice to al his people.
15 Porro Joab filius Sarviæ erat super exercitum, et Josaphat filius Ahilud a commentariis :15 Joab son of Zeruiah was in command of the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was herald;
16 Sadoc autem filius Achitob, et Ahimelech filius Abiathar, sacerdotes : et Susa, scriba :16 Zadok son of Ahitub and Abiathar son of Ahimelech were priests; Shusha was secretary;
17 Banaias quoque filius Jojadæ super legiones Cerethi et Phelethi : porro filii David, primi ad manum regis.17 Benaiah son of Jehoiada was in command of the Cherethites and Pelethites; David's sons took firstplace after the king.
