1 E non sapete voi, fratelli; a coloro che sanno la legge favello; che la legge ha signoria nell' uomo quanto tempo egli vive?	1 Do you not know, brethren--for I am speaking to those who know the law--that the law is binding on a person only during his life?
2 Chè certo la femina tanto è sotto alla signoria del marito, quanto tempo il marito vive; e morto il marito, sì è sciolta la femina dalla legge del marito.	2 Thus a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives; but if her husband dies she is discharged from the law concerning the husband.
3 Adunque insino a tanto che il marito è vivo, se ella averà fallito con altro uomo, sì sarà chiamata adultera; ma se sarà morto il marito, sì sarà liberata dalla legge del marito; e non sarà chiamata adultera, s' ella sarà con altro uomo.	3 Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.
4 E così, fratelli miei, voi siete liberati dalla legge (vecchia) per il corpo di Cristo, chè siate d'altro marito (in Gesù Cristo), che suscitò da morte, perchè facciate frutto a Dio.	4 Likewise, my brethren, you have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God.
5 Chè quando noi eravamo nell' opere della carne, le passioni delli peccati, li quali erano per la legge, sì erano operate nelle membra nostre, che facessono frutto alla morte.	5 While we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death.
6 Ma ora siamo soluti della legge della morte, nella quale noi eravamo tenuti, perciò che serviamo in novità di spirito, e non in vecchiezza di lettera.	6 But now we are discharged from the law, dead to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit.
7 Adunque che diremo? È peccato la legge? Non piaceia a Dio. Ma il peccato non conosco, se non per la legge; chè io non cognoscea, la concupiscenza, se la legge non mi dicesse: non avere concupiscenza.	7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet, if it had not been for the law, I should not have known sin. I should not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, "You shall not covet."
8 Ma ricevuta cagione, il peccato per lo comandamento della legge, adoperò in me tutta cupidezza. Però che sanza la legge il peccato era morto.	8 But sin, finding opportunity in the commandment, wrought in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law sin lies dead.
9 Ma io vivea tallotta sanza legge. Ma conciossia cosa che venisse il comandamento (della legge), il peccato resuscitò.	9 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died;
10 E io sono morto: ed è trovata in me bugia; e quella cosa ch' era a vita, sì fu trovata in me a morte.	10 the very commandment which promised life proved to be death to me.
11 Chè il peccato pigliò cagione per il comandamento (della legge), e ingannommi, e con quello comandamento mi uccise.	11 For sin, finding opportunity in the commandment, deceived me and by it killed me.
12 Adunque certo è che la legge è santa; e il suo comandamento sì è santo e giusto e buono.	12 So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good.
13 Adunque quella cosa, ch' è buona, ha fatta a me morte? Non piaccia a Dio. Ma il peccato, perchè si conosca esser peccato, per il bene sì mi ha data la morte; chè il peccato, che si fa per lo comandamento della legge e contra alla legge, sì è peccato sopra misura.	13 Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, working death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.
14 Sapemo che la legge sì è spirituale; e io son carnale, sottomesso al peccato.	14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am carnal, sold under sin.
15 E quello che io faccio non cognosco; chè io non fo quel bene che io voglio; ma quello male che io abbo in odio, quello faccio.	15 I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.
16 E se io faccio quello che io non voglio, consento alla legge, però ch' è buona.	16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good.
17 Ma ora già nol faccio io, ma il peccato il quale abita in me.	17 So then it is no longer I that do it, but sin which dwells within me.
18 Ciò è per il fermo, che in me, cioè nella mia carne, non dimora alcuno bene; chè il volere abbo buono, ma il compimento buono non trovo in me.	18 For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it.
19 [Chè io non fo quel bene che io voglio; ma quello male che io non voglio, quello faccio].	19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do.
20 Che se faccio quello che io non voglio, quello non adopero io, ma fallo il peccato che dimora in me.	20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin which dwells within me.
21 Adunque io si trovo legge a me, vogliendo far bene, chè il male sì mi sovrasta (e piacemi).	21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.
22 E io sì mi diletto nella legge di Dio, secondo l'anima ch' è dentro.	22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inmost self,
23 Ma veggio un' altra legge nelle mie membra, la qual legge sì combatte colla legge della mia mente (dentro), e tienmi legato nella legge del peccato, la quale è nelle mie membra.	23 but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin which dwells in my members.
24 Ora sciagurato me! (uomo malvagio) chi mi scamparà del corpo di questa morte?	24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
25 Certo la grazia di Dio per il nostro Signore Iesù Cristo. Adunque io medesimo con la mente sì servo alla legge di Dio; e colla carne, alla legge del peccato.	25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I of myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
