| 1 Ricordati del creatore tuo nel dì della gioventude tua, innanzi che vegna il tempo della afflizione, e ch' elli appressino quelli anni de' quali tu dica: questi non mi piacciono! | 1 Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come, and the years draw nigh, when you will say, "I have no pleasure in them"; |
| 2 e inanzi che intenebrisca il sole e 'l lume, e le stelle e la luna, e ch' elli ritornino li nuvoli dopo la piova; | 2 before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened and the clouds return after the rain; |
| 3 quando si partiranno le guardie della casa, e muterannosi li uomini fortissimi, e oziosamente saranno coloro che màcinano in minuto numero, ed entreranno coloro che guatano per li forami; | 3 in the day when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men are bent, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look through the windows are dimmed, |
| 4 e li macinati in bassezza di voce chiuderanno li usci nella piazza, e leverannosi su alla voce dell' uccello, e diventeranno sorde tutte le figlie di monte Carmelo. | 4 and the doors on the street are shut; when the sound of the grinding is low, and one rises up at the voice of a bird, and all the daughters of song are brought low; |
| 5 E le cose alte temerenno, e averanno paura nella via; fiorirae lo mandolo, e ingrasserae la locusta, e guasterae il capparo; però che l' uomo anderae nella casa della sua eternitade, e li piagnenti anderanno intorno per la piazza. | 5 they are afraid also of what is high, and terrors are in the way; the almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper drags itself along and desire fails; because man goes to his eternal home, and the mourners go about the streets; |
| 6 Inanzi che si rompa la fune dell' argento, ricorra la vitta dell' oro, e sia disfragellata la idria in su la fontana, e sia spezzata la ruota su la cisterna; | 6 before the silver cord is snapped, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern, |
| 7 inanzi che la polvere torni nella terra sua donde ella era, e anzi che l'anima ritorni a colui che la diede. | 7 and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. |
| 8 Vanitade delle vanitadi, disse lo Ecclesiaste e tutte le cose sono vanitade. | 8 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher; all is vanity. |
| 9 E conciò fusse cosa che lo Ecclesiaste [fusse] savissimo, ha ammaestrato il popolo, e insegnolli quelle cose che avesse a fare; e investigando compose il libro de' proverbii. | 9 Besides being wise, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge, weighing and studying and arranging proverbs with great care. |
| 10 Cercò le parole utili, e scrisse insieme sermoni dirittissimi e pieni di veritade. | 10 The Preacher sought to find pleasing words, and uprightly he wrote words of truth. |
| 11 Le parole de' savi sono sì come stili pungenti, e sì come chiavelli fitti nel profondo, le quali per consiglio de' maestri sono date da uno pastore. | 11 The sayings of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings which are given by one Shepherd. |
| 12 Oltre di queste cose (che sono scritte) non richieder più, figliuolo mio; però che a componer altri libri non sarà utile, e la spessa meditazione è afflizione della carne. | 12 My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh. |
| 13 Il fine del parlare noi tutti udiamo ugualmente. Temi Iddio, e guarda li suoi comandamenti; (ciò) è ogni uomo a questo fine fatto. | 13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. |
| 14 Tutte le cose che si fanno, si riduceranno nel giudicio per ciascuna cosa errata, e per ogni cosa, se ella sia buona o se ella sia rea. Amen. | 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil. |
