BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Feci io patto cogli occhi miei, acciò ch' io in verità non pensassi della vergine.	1 If I have made an agreement with my eyes and entertained any thoughts against a maiden;
2 Adunque che parte avrebbe Iddio di sopra a me, e la ereditade all' Onnipotente di cose eccelse?	2 But what is man's lot from God above, his inheritance from the Almighty on high?
3 Or non è perdizione al malvagio, e alienazione a coloro che òperano la ingiustizia?	3 Is it not calamity for the unrighteous, and woe for evildoers?
4 Or non considera elli le mie vie, e tutti li andamenti miei annumera?	4 Does he not see my ways, and number all my steps?
5 Se io andai nella vanitade, e affrettossi lo piede mio in inganno;	5 If I have walked in falsehood and my foot has hastened to deceit;
6 pona me nella giusta statera, e sappia Iddio la mia simplicitade.	6 Let God weigh me in the scales of justice; thus will he know my innocence!
7 Se si partì l'andamento mio della via, se seguitò l'occhio mio il cuore, e nelle mie mani s'appiccò macchia;	7 If my steps have turned out of the way, and my heart has followed my eyes, or any stain clings to my hands,
8 seminarò, e uno altro mangerà; e la mia schiatta sarà deradicata.	8 Then may I sow, but another eat of it, or may my planting be rooted up!
9 Se ingannato è lo cuore mio sopra la femina, e se io assediai l'uscio dell' amico mio;	9 If my heart has been enticed toward a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door;
10 meretrice sia di un altro la moglie mia, e sopra quella si distendano gli. altri.	10 Then may my wife grind for another, and may others cohabit with her!
11 Certo questo è fellonia, e massima iniquitade.	11 For that would be heinous, a crime to be condemned;
12 Fuoco è, devorante insino alla perdizione, e deradicante ogni generazione (mia).	12 A fire that should burn down to the abyss till it consumed all my possessions to the roots.
13 Se disprezzai di sottoporre me allo giudicio col servo mio e l' ancilla mia, quando contendevano contro a me;	13 Had I refused justice to my manservant or to my maid, when they had a claim against me,
14 che adunque faroe, quando si leverae Iddio a giudicare? e quando addomanderae, che responderò a lui?	14 What then should I do when God rose up; what could I answer when he demanded an account?
15 Or non fece me nel ventre, il quale e quello fece, e formò me uno nella vulva?	15 Did not he who made me in the womb make him? Did not the same One fashion us before our birth?
16 Se io negai alli poveri quello che vole ano, e feci aspettare l'occhio della vedova;	16 If I have denied anything to the poor, or allowed the eyes of the widow to languish
17 se io mangiai la mia fetta solo, e non mangioe lo pupillo di quella;	17 While I ate my portion alone, with no share in it for the fatherless,
18 perciò che dalla mia fanciullezza crescè meco la miserazione, e del ventre della madre mia venne meco;	18 Though like a father God has reared me from my youth, guiding me even from my mother's womb--
19 se disprezzai colui che passava, per ch' elli non avea il vestire, e lo povero sanza coprimento;	19 If I have seen a wanderer without clothing, or a poor man without covering,
20 se non benedissero me li lati suoi, e della lana delle pecore mie s'è riscaldato;	20 Whose limbs have not blessed me when warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
21 s' io levai sopra lo pupillo la mia mano, eziandio quando vedeva[mi] superiore nella porta;	21 If I have raised my hand against the innocent because I saw that I had supporters at the gate--
22 l'omero mio delle sue giunture caggia, e lo mio braccio colle sue ossa sieno contrite.	22 Then may my arm fall from the shoulder, my forearm be broken at the elbow!
23 Certo sempre, sì come onde di mare gonfiate sopra me, temetti Iddio, e lo suo carico non potei portare.	23 For the dread of God will be upon me, and his majesty will overpower me.
24 S' io pensai che l'oro fosse mia fortezza, e all' oro ottimo e risplendente dissi: tu sei la fidanza mia;	24 Had I put my trust in gold or called fine gold my security;
25 s' io mi rallegrai sopra le molte mie ricchezze, e perciò che più cose trovò la mia mano;	25 Or had I rejoiced that my wealth was great, or that my hand had acquired abundance--
26 s' io vidi lo sole quando risplendea, e la luna andante chiaramente;	26 Had I looked upon the sun as it shone, or the moon in the splendor of its progress,
27 e rallegrato è in ascoso lo mio cuore, e basciai la mia mano colla mia bocca;	27 And had my heart been secretly enticed to waft them a kiss with my hand;
28 la quale è massima iniquitade, e negazione contro a Dio altissimo;	28 This too would be a crime for condemnation, for I should have denied God above.
29 S' io mi rallegrai della rovina di colui che mi odiava, e rallegra'mi di colui, che li fosse venuto male;	29 Had I rejoiced at the destruction of my enemy or exulted when evil fell upon him,
30 in veritade io non diedi al peccare la mia gola, acciò ch' io addomandassi maledicente l' anima sua;	30 Even though I had not suffered my mouth to sin by uttering a curse against his life--
31 se non dissero gli uomini del mio tabernacolo chi ci darae della carne sua acciò che noi ci saziamo?	31 Had not the men of my tent exclaimed, "Who has not been fed with his meat!"
32 di fuori non stette lo peregrino; l'uscio mio si manifestò allo viandante;	32 Because no stranger lodged in the street, but I opened my door to wayfarers--
33 s'io nascosi, quasi come uomo, lo mio peccato, e celai nello seno mio la mia iniquitade;	33 Had I, out of human weakness, hidden my sins and buried my guilt in my bosom
34 se io mi spaventai alla troppo moltitudine, e lo disprezzo delli più prossimi spaurì me; e non maggiormente tacetti, e non uscii fuori dell' uscio;	34 Because I feared the noisy multitude and the scorn of the tribes terrified me- then I should have remained silent, and not come out of doors!
35 chi darà a me auditore, acciò che l' Onnipotente oda il mio desiderio; e lo libro scriva colui che giudica;	35 Oh, that I had one to hear my case, and that my accuser would write out his indictment!
36 acciò che collo mio omero lo porti, e poni intorno a quello, sì come corona a me?	36 Surely, I should wear it on my shoulder or put it on me like a diadem;
37 Per tutti li miei gradi pronunzierò quello, e sì come a principe io offerirò lui.	37 Of all my steps I should give him an account; like a prince I should present myself before him. This is my final plea; let the Almighty answer me! The words of Job are ended.
38 Se contro a me la mia terra grida, e con lei gli solchi suoi piangono;	38 If my land has cried out against me till its very furrows complained;
39 se li frutti suoi mangiai sanza pecunia, l'anima delli lavoratori tormentai;	39 If I have eaten its produce without payment and grieved the hearts of its tenants;
40 per lo grano naschi a me lo tribolo, e per l'orzo la spina.	40 Then let the thistles grow instead of wheat and noxious weeds instead of barley!
