1 Prese allora la parola Sofar di Naama, e disse:	1 And Zophar the Naamathite spoke out and said:
2 « Può essere che il parolaio non abbia risposta, e che il linguacciuto abbia ragione?	2 Should not the man of many words be answered, or must the garrulous man necessarily be right?
3 Tu solo farai tacere gli uomini, e dopo aver scherniti gli altri, da nessuno sarai confutato?	3 Shall your babblings keep men silent, and shall you deride and no one give rebuke?
4 Tu hai detto: La mia parola è pura e sono senza macchia nel tuo cospetto.	4 Shall you say: "My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight"?
5 Oh! volesse Dio parlar lui con te, e aprirti le sue labbra,	5 But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips against you,
6 per manifestarti i segreti della sapienza, i molteplici aspetti della sua legge! Allora capiresti che esige da te molto meno di quello che non meritino le tue colpe.	6 And tell you that the secrets of wisdom are twice as effective: So you might learn that God will make you answer for your guilt.
7 Pretendi forse di investigare le vie di Dio, e di comprendere perfettamente l'Onnipotente?	7 Can you penetrate the designs of God? Dare you vie with the perfection of the Almighty?
8 E' più alto del cielo, e come farai (ad arrivarci)? E' più profondo dell'inferno, e come potrai scrutarlo?	8 It is higher than the heavens; what can you do? It is deeper than the nether world; what can you know?
9 La sua misura è più lunga della terra, e più larga del mare.	9 It is longer than the earth in measure, and broader than the sea.
10 Se mette sossopra tutte le cose, o le confonde insieme, chi potrà dirgli nulla?	10 If he seize and imprison or call to judgment, who then can say him nay?
11 Egli ben conosce la vanità degli uomini ed è possibile che vedendo l'iniquità non se ne curi?	11 For he knows the worthlessness of men and sees iniquity; will he then ignore it?
12 L'uomo stolto si leva in superbia, e si crede nato libero come il puledro dell'asino salvatico.	12 Will empty man then gain understanding, and the wild jackass be made docile?
13 Ma se tu, che hai indurato il cuore nello stendere le mani verso di lui,	13 If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him,
14 toglierai l'iniquità dalla tua mano, e non farai rimaner l'ingiustizia nella tua dimora,	14 If you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not injustice dwell in your tent,
15 allora potrai alzare la tua faccia senza macchia, sarai incrollabile e senza paura,	15 Surely then you may lift up your face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid.
16 dimenticherai la miseria; te ne ricorderai come d'acqua passata.	16 For then you shall forget your misery, or recall it like waters that have ebbed away.
17 Sul far della sera ti sorgerà una specie di luce meridiana, e quando ti crederai finito, sorgerai come la stella del mattino.	17 Then your life shall be brighter than the noonday; its gloom shall become as the morning,
18 Sarai pieno di fiducia per la speranza che ti attende, e anche sotterrato dormirai tranquillo.	18 And you shall be secure, because there is hope; you shall look round you and lie down in safety,
19 Riposerai, e non verrà nessuno a spaventarti, e moltissimi supplicheranno la tua faccia.	19 and you shall take your rest with none to disturb. Many shall entreat your favor,
20 Ma gli occhi degli empi verranno meno, non vi sarà scampo per essi, e la loro speranza diverrà l'abominazione della loro anima ».	20 but the wicked, looking on, shall be consumed with envy. Escape shall be cut off from them, they shall wait to expire.
