BIBBIA TINTORI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Giacobbe adunque abitò nella terra di Canaan, dove suo padre era stato pellegrino.	1 But Jacob settled in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.
2 E questa è la posterità di lui. Giuseppe all'età di sedici anni, ancor giovinetto, pasceva coi suoi fratelli il gregge, e stava coi figli di Baia e di Zelfa mogli del padre suo, presso il quale accusò i fratelli di un pessi o delitto.	2 This is the story of Joseph. Joseph was seventeen years old. As he was young, he was shepherdingthe flock with his brothers, with the sons of his father's wives, Bilhah and Zilpah; and Joseph brought his fatherbad reports about them.
3 Or Israele amava Giuseppe più di tutti gli altri suoi figlioli, avendolo avuto in vecchiaia, e gli aveva fatto una tunica a vari colori.	3 Jacob loved Joseph more than al his other sons, for he was the son of his old age, and he had adecorated tunic made for him.
4 Ma i suoi fratelli l'odiavano, vedendo che egli era amato dal padre più di tutti gli altri figli, e non gli potevan parlare amichevolmente.	4 But his brothers, seeing how much more his father loved him than all his other sons, came to hate himso much that they could not say a civil word to him.
5 Avvenne poi che Giuseppe riferì ai suoi fratelli un sogno da lui avuto, il che fu causa di maggior odio.	5 Now Joseph had a dream, and he repeated it to his brothers, who then hated him more than ever.
6 Egli disse loro: « Udite il sogno che ho fatto.	6 'Listen', he said, 'to the dream I had.
7 Mi pareva che si legasse i covoni nel campo, e che il mio covone, quasi alzandosi, stesse ritto, e che i vostri covoni, stando all'intorno, adorassero il mio covone ».	7 We were binding sheaves in the field, when my sheaf suddenly rose and stood upright, and then yoursheaves gathered round and bowed to my sheaf.'
8 Allora i fratelli gli dissero: « Che forse tu sarai nostro re e noi dovremo stare a te soggetti? » Così questi sogni e questi discorsi accrebbero l'invidia e l'odio.	8 'So you want to be king over us,' his brothers retorted, 'you want to lord it over us?' And they hatedhim even more, on account of his dreams and of what he said.
9 Egli ebbe ancora un altro sogno, e, raccontandolo ai fratelli, disse: « Mi sembrava, in sogno, che il sole, la luna e undici stelle mi adorassero ».	9 He had another dream which he recounted to his brothers. 'Look, I have had another dream,' he said.'There were the sun, the moon and eleven stars, bowing down to me.'
10 Avendolo raccontato al padre e ai fratelli, suo padre lo sgridò, dicendo: « Che vuol dire questo sogno che hai avuto? Forse che io, tua madre, e i tuoi fratelli, prostrati per terra ti dovremo adorare? ».	10 He told his father and brothers, and his father scolded him. 'A fine dream to have!' he said to him.'Are all of us then, myself, your mother and your brothers, to come and bow to the ground before you?'
11 Mentre per questo i fratelli gli portavano invidia, il padre considerava dentro di sè la cosa.	11 His brothers held it against him, but his father pondered the matter.
12 Or mentre i suoi fratelli stavano a pascere i greggi del padre in Sichem,	12 His brothers went to pasture their father's flock at Shechem.
13 Israele disse a Giuseppe: « I tuoi fratelli pascolano le pecore in Sichem: vieni, chè ti manderò da loro ». Ed avendo egli risposto:	13 Then Israel said to Joseph, 'Your brothers are with the flock at Shechem, aren't they? Come, I amgoing to send you to them.' 'I am ready,' he replied.
14 « Eccomi », Giacobbe gli disse: «Va a vedere se tutto va bene relativamente ai tuoi fratelli e al bestiame, e portami le notizie di quanto si fa ». Mandato dalla valle di Ebron, Giuseppe arrivò a Sichem.	14 He said to him, 'Go and see how your brothers and the flock are doing, and bring me word.' He senthim from the val ey of Hebron, and Joseph arrived at Shechem.
15 Mentre andava errando per i campi, incontrò un uomo il quale gli domandò che cercasse.	15 A man found him wandering in the countryside and asked him, 'What are you looking for ? '
16 Egli rispose: « Cerco i miei fratelli, insegnami dove siano a pascere i greggi ».	16 'I am looking for my brothers,' he replied. 'Please tel me where they are pasturing their flock.'
17 Quell'uomo gli rispose: «Sono partiti di qui, e li ho sentiti dire: Andiamo a Dotain ». Allora Giuseppe andò a cercare i suoi fratelli e li trovò a Dotain.	17 The man answered, 'They have moved on from here; indeed I heard them say, "Let us go toDothan." ' So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.
18 Essi lo scorsero da lontano, e avanti che s'avvicinasse, disegnarono di ucciderlo,	18 They saw him in the distance, and before he reached them they made a plot to kil him.
19 e dicevansi l'uno all'altro: « Ecco, viene il sognatore!	19 'Here comes that dreamer,' they said to one another.
20 Su via, ammazziamolo e gettiamolo in una vecchia cisterna, e poi diremo: Una fiera crudele lo ha divorato; e allora si vedrà a che gli giovino i suoi sogni».	20 'Come on, let us kil him now and throw him down one of the storage-wells; we can say that somewild animal has devoured him. Then we shal see what becomes of his dreams.'
21 Ma Ruben, udito questo, si sforzava di liberarlo dalle loro mani, e diceva:	21 But Reuben heard, and he saved him from their clutches. 'We must not take his life,' he said.
22 « Non lo ammazzate, non versate il suo sangue; ma gettatelo in questa cisterna che è nel deserto, e serbate pure le vostre mani ». E diceva questo perchè voleva liberarlo dalle loro mani e restituirlo a suo padre.	22 'Shed no blood,' said Reuben to them, 'throw him down that wel out in the desert, but do not kil himyourselves' -- intending to save him from them and to restore him to his father.
23 Appena dunque Giuseppe giunse dai suoi fratelli, questi lo spogliarono della tunica talare a vari colori,	23 So, when Joseph reached his brothers, they pul ed off his tunic, the decorated tunic which he waswearing,
24 e lo gettarono nella vecchia cisterna che era senz'acqua.	24 and catching hold of him, threw him into the wel . The wel was empty, with no water in it.
25 Postisi poi a sedere per prendere cibo, videro dei viaggiatori Ismaeliti che venivano da Galaad coi cammelli carichi di aromi, di resina e di mirra per l'Egitto.	25 They then sat down to eat. Looking up, they saw a group of Ishmaelites who were coming fromGilead, their camels laden with gum tragacanth, balsam and resin, which they were taking to Egypt.
26 e Allora Giuda disse ai suoi fratelli: « Che guadagneremo a uccidere il nostro fratello e a celarne il sangue?	26 Then Judah said to his brothers, 'What do we gain by killing our brother and covering up his blood?
27 È meglio venderlo agli Ismaeliti, e non imbrattare le nostre mani, perchè egli è nostro fratello e nostra carne ». I suoi fratelli gli diedero ascolto,	27 Come, let us sel him to the Ishmaelites, then we shal not have laid hands on him ourselves. Afteral , he is our brother, and our own flesh.' His brothers agreed.
28 e mentre passavano quei mercanti Madianiti, lo trassero dalla cisterna e lo vendettero per venti pezzi d'argento a quegli Ismaeliti, i quali lo condussero in Egitto.	28 Now some Midianite merchants were passing, and they pul ed Joseph out of the wel . They soldJoseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver, and these men took Joseph to Egypt.
29 Or quando Ruben, tornato alla cisterna, non ci trovò più Giuseppe,	29 When Reuben went back to the wel , there was no sign of Joseph. Tearing his clothes,
30 stracciatesi le vesti, andò a trovare i suoi fratelli e disse: « Il ragazzo non si vede, ed io dove me ne andrò? »	30 he went back to his brothers. 'The boy has gone,' he said. 'What am I going to do?'
31 Ma quelli, presa la tunica di Giuseppe, la intrisero nel sangue di un capretto da loro ucciso,	31 They took Joseph's tunic and, slaughtering a goat, dipped the tunic in the blood.
32 e mandarono a portarla al padre e a dirgli: « Abbiamo trovata questa tunica: guarda se è o no quella del tuo figliolo ».	32 Then they sent off the decorated tunic and had it taken to their father, with the message, 'This iswhat we have found. Do you recognise it as your son's tunic or not?'
33 E il padre, avendola riconosciuta, disse: « È la tunica del mio figliolo! Una fiera crudele lo ha mangiato; una bestia ha divorato Giuseppe! »	33 He recognised it and cried, 'My son's tunic! A wild animal has devoured him! Joseph has been torn topieces!'
34 E stracciatesi le vesti, si copri di cilizio e pianse per molto tempo il suo figlio.	34 Tearing his clothes and putting sackcloth round his waist, Jacob mourned his son for many days.
35 Tutti i figli si radunarono intorno al padre per lenirne il dolore; ma egli rifiutò d'essere consolato e disse: «Scenderò piangendo dal mio figliolo nel soggiorno dei morti ». E mentre egli perseverava nel pianto,	35 Al his sons and daughters tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. 'No,' he said, 'I wilgo down to Sheol in mourning and join my son.' Thus his father wept for him.
36 i Madianiti vendettero in Egitto Giuseppe a Putifar, eunuco di Faraone, capitano delle milizie.	36 Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials andcommander of the guard.
