Epístola de São Tiago 2

1 Meus irmãos, na vossa fé em nosso glorioso Senhor Jesus Cristo, guardai-vos de toda consideração de pessoas.	1 My brothers, within the glorious faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, do not choose to show favoritism toward persons.
2 Suponde que entre na vossa reunião um homem com anel de ouro e ricos trajes, e entre também um pobre com trajes gastos;	2 For if a man has entered your assembly having a gold ring and splendid apparel, and if a poor man has also entered, in dirty clothing,
3 se atenderdes ao que está magnificamente trajado, e lhe disserdes: Senta-te aqui, neste lugar de honra, e disserdes ao pobre: Fica ali de pé, ou: Senta-te aqui junto ao estrado dos meus pés,	3 and if you are then attentive to the one who is clothed in excellent apparel, so that you say to him, “You may sit in this good place,” but you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit below my footstool,”
4 não é verdade que fazeis distinção entre vós, e que sois juízes de pensamentos iníquos?	4 are you not judging within yourselves, and have you not become judges with unjust thoughts?
5 Ouvi, meus caríssimos irmãos: porventura não escolheu Deus os pobres deste mundo para que fossem ricos na fé e herdeiros do Reino prometido por Deus aos que o amam?	5 My most beloved brothers, listen. Has not God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that God has promised to those who love him?
6 Mas vós desprezastes o pobre! Não são porventura os ricos os que vos oprimem e vos arrastam aos tribunais?	6 But you have dishonored the poor. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you through power? And are not they the ones who drag you to judgment?
7 Não blasfemam eles o belo nome que trazeis?	7 Are not they the ones who blaspheme the good name which has been invoked over you?
8 Se cumprirdes a lei régia da Escritura: Amarás o teu próximo como a ti mesmo {Lv 19,18}, sem dúvida fazeis bem.	8 So if you perfect the regal law, according to the Scriptures, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” then you do well.
9 Mas se vos deixais levar por distinção de pessoas, cometeis uma falta e sereis condenados pela lei como transgressores.	9 But if you show favoritism to persons, then you commit a sin, having been convicted again by the law as transgressors.
10 Pois quem guardar os preceitos da lei, mas faltar em um só ponto, tornar-se-á culpado de toda ela.	10 Now whoever has observed the whole law, yet who offends in one matter, has become guilty of all.
11 Porque aquele que disse: Não cometerás adultério, disse também: Não matarás {Ex 20,13s}. Se, pois, matares, embora não tenhas cometido adultério, tornas-te transgressor da lei.	11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not kill.” So if you do not commit adultery, but you kill, you have become a transgressor of the law.
12 Falai, pois, de tal modo e de tal modo procedei, como se estivésseis para ser julgados pela lei da liberdade.	12 So speak and act just as you are beginning to be judged, by the law of liberty.
13 Haverá juízo sem misericórdia para aquele que não usou de misericórdia. A misericórdia triunfa sobre o julgamento.	13 For judgment is without mercy toward him who has not shown mercy. But mercy exalts itself above judgment.
14 De que aproveitará, irmãos, a alguém dizer que tem fé, se não tiver obras? Acaso esta fé poderá salvá-lo?	14 My brothers, what benefit is there if someone claims to have faith, but he does not have works? How would faith be able to save him?
15 Se a um irmão ou a uma irmã faltarem roupas e o alimento cotidiano,	15 So if a brother or sister is naked and daily in need of food,
16 e algum de vós lhes disser: Ide em paz, aquecei-vos e fartai-vos, mas não lhes der o necessário para o corpo, de que lhes aproveitará?	16 and if anyone of you were to say to them: “Go in peace, keep warm and nourished,” and yet not give them the things that are necessary for the body, of what benefit is this?
17 Assim também a fé: se não tiver obras, é morta em si mesma.	17 Thus even faith, if it does not have works, is dead, in and of itself.
18 Mas alguém dirá: Tu tens fé, e eu tenho obras. Mostra-me a tua fé sem obras e eu te mostrarei a minha fé pelas minhas obras.	18 Now someone may say: “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works! But I will show you my faith by means of works.
19 Crês que há um só Deus. Fazes bem. Também os demônios crêem e tremem.	19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. But the demons also believe, and they tremble greatly.
20 Queres ver, ó homem vão, como a fé sem obras é estéril?	20 So then, are you willing to understand, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?
21 Abraão, nosso pai, não foi justificado pelas obras, oferecendo o seu filho Isaac sobre o altar?	21 Was not our father Abraham justified by means of works, by offering his son Isaac upon the altar?
22 Vês como a fé cooperava com as suas obras e era completada por elas.	22 Do you see that faith was cooperating with his works, and that by means of works faith was brought to fulfillment?
23 Assim se cumpriu a Escritura, que diz: Abraão creu em Deus e isto lhe foi tido em conta de justiça, e foi chamado amigo de Deus {Gn 15,6}.	23 And so the Scripture was fulfilled which says: “Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.” And so he was called the friend of God.
24 Vedes como o homem é justificado pelas obras e não somente pela fé?	24 Do you see that a man is justified by means of works, and not by faith alone?
25 Do mesmo modo Raab, a meretriz, não foi ela justificada pelas obras, por ter recebido os mensageiros e os ter feito sair por outro caminho?	25 Similarly also, Rahab, the harlot, was she not justified by works, by receiving the messengers and sending them out through another way?
26 Assim como o corpo sem a alma é morto, assim também a fé sem obras é morta.	26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
