LA SACRA BIBBIA	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Il cananeo re di Arad, che risiede nel Negheb, sentì che Israele era arrivato per il cammino di Atarim, e combatté contro Israele facendone dei prigionieri.	1 And when king Arad the Chanaanite, who dwelt towards the south, had heard this, to wit, that Israel was come by the way of the spies, he fought against them, and overcoming them carried off their spoils.
2 Israele fece un voto al Signore e disse: "Se darai in mano mia questo popolo, voterò allo sterminio le loro città".	2 But Israel binding himself by vow to the Lord, said: It thou wilt deliver this people into my hand, I will utterly destroy their cities.
3 Il Signore ascoltò la voce d'Israele e gli mise nelle mani i Cananei; Israele votò allo sterminio loro e le loro città, e quel luogo fu chiamato Corma.	3 And the Lord heard the prayers of Israel, and delivered up the Chanaanite, and they cut them off and destroyed their cities: and they called the name of that place Horma, that is to say, Anathema.
4 Tolsero le tende dal monte Or, dirigendosi verso il Mar Rosso, per aggirare la terra di Edom: e l'animo del popolo si rattristò nel cammino.	4 And they marched from mount Hor, by the way that leadeth to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom. And the people began to be weary of their journey and labour:
5 Il popolo parlò contro Dio e contro Mosè: "Perché ci hai fatti uscire dall'Egitto per morire nel deserto? Qui non c'è né pane né acqua e siamo nauseati di un cibo così inconsistente".	5 And speaking against God end Moses, they said: Why didst thou bring us out of Egypt, to die in the wilderness? There is no bread, nor have we any waters: our soul now loatheth this very light food.
6 Il Signore allora inviò al popolo i serpenti che bruciano: morsero il popolo e molta gente d'Israele morì.	6 Wherefore the Lord sent among the people fiery serpents, which bit them and killed many of them.
7 Il popolo venne da Mosè e disse: "Abbiamo peccato, perché abbiamo parlato contro il Signore e contro te. Intercedi presso il Signore e allontana da noi il serpente". Mosè intercedette per il popolo.	7 Upon which they came to Moses, and said: We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and thee: pray that he may take away these serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
8 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Fatti un serpente e mettilo sopra un'asta: chiunque sarà morso e lo guarderà, vivrà".	8 And the Lord said to him: Make brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: whosoever being struck shall look on it, shall live.
9 Mosè fece un serpente di bronzo e lo mise su un'asta; se un serpente mordeva un uomo e costui guardava il serpente di bronzo, viveva.	9 Moses therefore made a brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: which when they that were bitten looked upon, they were healed.
10 I figli d'Israele tolsero le tende e si accamparono in Obot.	10 And the children of Israel setting forwards camped in Oboth.
11 Partirono da Obot e si accamparono a Iie-Abarim, nel deserto che è di fronte a Moab, dal lato dove sorge il sole.	11 And departing thence they pitched their tents in Jeabarim, in the wilderness, that faceth Moab toward the east.
12 Partirono di là e si accamparono presso il torrente Zered.	12 And removing from thence, they came to the torrent Zared:
13 Di là partirono e posero il campo oltre l'Arnon, che scorre nel deserto e proviene dal confine degli Amorrei, perché l'Arnon è il confine di Moab, tra Moab e gli Amorrei.	13 Which they left and encamped over against Arnon, which is in the desert and standeth out on the borders of the Amorrhite. For Arnon is the border of Moab, dividing the Moabites and the Amorrhites.
14 Per questo è detto nel libro delle guerre del Signore: "...Vaeb in Sufa e le sponde dell'Arnon,	14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord: As he did in the Red Sea, so will he do in the streams of Amen.
15 il pendio delle sponde che piega verso l'abitato di Ar e si appoggia al confine di Moab".	15 The rocks of the torrents were bowed down that they might rest in Ar, and lie down in the borders of the Moabites.
16 Di là andarono fino a Beer: è quel pozzo di cui il Signore aveva detto a Mosè: "Raduna il popolo e darò loro dell'acqua".	16 When they went from that place, the well appeared whereof the Lord said to Moses: Gather the people together, and I will give them water.
17 Allora Israele compose questa canzone: "Sgorga, o pozzo: cantatelo;	17 Then Israel sung this song: Let the well spring up. They sung thereto:
18 pozzo che i prìncipi hanno scavato, che i nobili del popolo hanno forato con lo scettro, con il loro bastone". E dal deserto andarono a Mattana,	18 The well, which the princes dug, and the chiefs of the people prepared by the direction of the lawgiver, and with their staves. And they marched from the wilderness to Mathana.
19 da Mattana a Nacaliel, da Nacaliel a Bamot,	19 From Mathana unto Nahaliel: from Nahaliel unto Bamoth.
20 e da Bamot alla valle che è nei campi di Moab: la cima del Pisga domina di fronte al deserto.	20 From Bamoth, is a valley in the country of Moab, to the top of Phasga, which looked towards the desert.
21 Israele inviò messaggeri a Sicon, re amorreo, a dire:	21 And Israel sent messengers to Sehon king of the Amorrhites, saying:
22 "Lasciami passare nella tua terra: non piegheremo nel campo e nella vigna, non berremo acqua di pozzo: andremo per la strada reale, finché passeremo il tuo confine".	22 I beseech thee that I may have leave to pass through thy land: we will not go aside into the fields or the vineyards, we will not drink waters of the wells, we will go the king's highway, till we be past thy borders.
23 Ma Sicon non fece passare Israele per il suo confine. Sicon riunì il suo popolo e uscì incontro a Israele nel deserto. Arrivò a Iaaz e combatté contro Israele.	23 And he would not grant that Israel should pass by his borders: but rather gathering an army, went forth to meet them in the desert, and came to Jasa, and fought against them.
24 Israele lo colpì a fil di spada e conquistò la sua terra dall'Arnon fino allo Iabbok, fino ai confini degli Ammoniti, perché forte era il confine degli Ammoniti.	24 And he was slain by them with the edge of the sword, and they possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jeboc, and to the confines of the children of Ammon: for the borders of the Ammonites, were kept with a strong garrison.
25 Israele prese tutte quelle città e dimorò in tutte le città amorree, in Chesbon e in tutte le sue dipendenze,	25 So Israel took all his cities, and dwelt in the cities of the Amorrhite, to wit, in Hesebon, and in the villages thereof.
26 perché Chesbon è una città di Sicon, re amorreo: egli aveva combattuto contro il precedente re di Moab e gli aveva preso di mano tutta la sua terra fino all'Arnon.	26 Hesebon was the city of Sehon the king of the Amorrhites, who fought against the king of Moab: and took all the land, that had been of his dominions, as far as the Arnon.
27 Per questo i poeti dicono: "Venite a Chesbon, si edifichi e stabilisca la città di Sicon,	27 Therefore it is said in the proverb: Come into Hesebon, let the city of Sehon be built and set up:
28 perché fuoco è uscito da Chesbon, fiamma dalla città di Sicon: ha divorato Ar di Moab, i padroni delle alture dell'Arnon.	28 A fire is gone out of Hesebon, a flame from the city of Sehon, and hath consumed Ar of the Moabites, and the inhabitants of the high places of the Arnon.
29 Guai a te, Moab, sei perduto, popolo di Camos: ha dato i suoi figli alla fuga, le sue figlie alla schiavitù, a Sicon, re amorreo.	29 Woe to thee Moab: thou art undone, O people of Chamos. He hath given his sons to flight, and his daughters into captivity to Sehon the king of the Amorrhites.
30 Li abbiamo colpiti con frecce, è perduto da Chesbon fino a Dibon, abbiamo devastato fino a Nofach, che è presso Madaba".	30 Their yoke is perished from Hesebon unto Dibon, they came weary to Nophe, and unto Medaba.
31 Israele dimorò nella terra dell'Amorreo.	31 So Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorrhite.
32 Poi Mosè mandò a esplorare Iazer: presero le sue dipendenze e scacciarono gli Amorrei che vi si trovavano.	32 And Moses sent some to take a view of Jazer: and they took the villages of it, and conquered the inhabitants.
33 Poi cambiarono direzione e salirono per la strada di Basan. Uscì Og, re di Basan, con tutto il suo popolo contro di loro per far guerra in Edrei.	33 And they turned themselves, and went up by the way of Basan, and Og the king of Basan came against them with all his people, to fight in Edrai.
34 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Non aver paura di lui, perché te l'ho dato in mano, lui e tutto il suo popolo con la sua terra: farai a lui come hai fatto a Sicon, re amorreo che sta in Chesbon".	34 And the Lord said to Moses: Fear him not, for I have delivered him and all his people, and his country into thy hand: and thou shalt do to him as thou didst to Sehon the king of the Amorrhites, the inhabitant of Hesebon.
35 E colpirono lui, i suoi figli e tutto il suo popolo, finché restò un superstite, e presero possesso della sua terra.	35 So they slew him also with his sons, and all his people, not letting any one escape, and they possessed his land.
