LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Tutta la comunità si sollevò e fece sentire la propria voce: il popolo pianse quella notte.	1 The whole community then cried out in dismay, and the people wept al that night.
2 Tutti i figli d'Israele mormorarono contro Mosè ed Aronne e tutta la comunità disse loro: "Fossimo morti in terra d'Egitto o fossimo morti in questo deserto!	2 Al the Israelites muttered at Moses and Aaron, and the whole community said to them, 'Would toGod we had died in Egypt, or even that we had died in this desert!
3 Perché il Signore ci conduce in questa terra a cadere di spada? Le nostre donne e i nostri bambini saranno un bottino: non è forse bene per noi tornare in Egitto?".	3 Why has Yahweh brought us to this country, for us to perish by the sword and our wives and childrento be seized as booty? Should we not do better to go back to Egypt?'
4 E ognuno diceva al proprio fratello: "Diamoci un capo e torniamo in Egitto".	4 And they said to one another, 'Let us appoint a leader and go back to Egypt.'
5 Mosè ed Aronne si prostrarono di fronte a tutta l'assemblea della comunità dei figli d'Israele.	5 At this, Moses and Aaron threw themselves on their faces in front of the whole assembled communityof Israelites,
6 Giosuè, figlio di Nun, e Caleb, figlio di Iefunne, di quelli che avevano esplorato la terra, strapparono i propri vestiti	6 while Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, two of the men who had reconnoitred thecountry, tore their clothes
7 e dissero a tutta la comunità dei figli d'Israele: "La terra in cui siamo passati per esplorarla è una terra buonissima.	7 and addressed the whole community of Israelites as fol ows, 'The country we went to reconnoitre is agood country, an excel ent country.
8 Se il Signore ci è propizio, ci condurrà a questa terra e ce la darà: è una terra dove scorre latte e miele.	8 If Yahweh is pleased with us, he will lead us into this country and give it to us. It is a country flowingwith milk and honey.
9 Solo, non ribellatevi al Signore e non temete il popolo della terra, perché è pane per noi: la loro difesa si è allontanata da loro, mentre il Signore è con noi. Non abbiate paura di loro".	9 But do not rebel against Yahweh or be afraid of the people of the country, for we shal gobble themup. Their protecting shade has deserted them, while we have Yahweh on our side. Do not be afraid of them.'
10 Tutta la comunità disse di lapidarli, quando la gloria del Signore apparve sulla tenda del convegno a tutti i figli d'Israele.	10 The whole community was talking of stoning them, when the glory of Yahweh appeared to al theIsraelites, inside the Tent of Meeting,
11 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Fino a quando questo popolo mi disprezzerà, fino a quando non mi crederanno dopo tutti i segni che ho fatto in mezzo a loro?	11 and Yahweh said to Moses: 'How much longer wil these people treat me with contempt? How muchlonger will they refuse to trust me, in spite of al the signs I have displayed among them?
12 Lo colpirò di peste, lo distruggerò e di te farò una nazione più grande e potente di lui".	12 I shall strike them with pestilence and disown them. And of you I shall make a new nation, greaterand mightier than they are.'
13 Mosè disse al Signore: "Gli Egiziani hanno sentito che con la tua forza hai fatto uscire questo popolo di mezzo a loro	13 Moses said to Yahweh: 'Suppose the Egyptians hear about this -- for by your power you broughtthese people out of their country-
14 e lo hanno detto all'abitante di questa terra. Hanno udito che tu, Signore, sei in mezzo a questo popolo, che ti mostri loro faccia a faccia, che la tua nuvola sta sopra di loro, che con una colonna di nuvola cammini davanti a loro di giorno e con una colonna di fuoco di notte.	14 and tel the people living in this country. They have heard that you, Yahweh, are with this people,and that you, Yahweh, show yourself to them face to face; that your cloud stands over them and that you gobefore them in a pil ar of cloud by day and a pil ar of fire by night.
15 Farai forse morire questo popolo come un sol uomo? Le nazioni che hanno sentito parlare della tua fama diranno:	15 If you kil this people now as though it were one man, then the nations who have heard about youwil say,
16 il Signore non ha potuto far venire questo popolo nella terra che gli aveva promesso con giuramento e li ha massacrati nel deserto.	16 "Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the country which he had sworn to give them, and sohe has slaughtered them in the desert."
17 Ora sia magnificata la potenza del mio Signore secondo quanto hai detto con le parole:	17 No, my Lord! Now is the time to assert your power as you promised when you said, earlier,
18 "Il Signore è lento all'ira e largo in misericordia, perdona la colpa e la trasgressione, ma non lascia impunito; castiga la colpa dei padri nei figli, fino alla terza e quarta generazione".	18 "Yahweh, slow to anger and rich in faithful love, forgiving faults and transgression, and yet lettingnothing go unchecked, punishing the parents' guilt in the children to the third and fourth generation."
19 Perdona dunque la colpa di questo popolo nella grandezza della tua misericordia, come hai perdonato a questo popolo dall'Egitto fin qui".	19 In your most faithful love, please forgive this people's guilt, as you have done from Egypt until now.'
20 Il Signore disse: "Gli perdono secondo la tua parola.	20 Yahweh said, 'I forgive them as you ask.
21 Ma come io sono vivo e la gloria del Signore riempie tutta la terra,	21 But -- as I live, and as the glory of Yahweh fills the whole world-
22 tutti gli uomini che hanno visto la mia gloria e i miei segni che ho fatto in Egitto e nel deserto e mi hanno tentato qui dieci volte e non hanno ascoltato la mia voce,	22 of all these people who have seen my glory and the signs that I worked in Egypt and in the desert,who have put me to the test ten times already and not obeyed my voice,
23 non vedranno la terra che ho promesso con giuramento ai loro padri, e non la vedranno tutti quelli che mi disprezzano.	23 not one shal see the country which I promised to give their ancestors. Not one of those who havetreated me contemptuously will see it.
24 Il mio servo Caleb, poiché un altro spirito fu in lui e mi seguì completamente, lo farò venire nella terra nella quale era andato e il suo seme la possederà.	24 However, since my servant Caleb is of another spirit and since he has obeyed me completely, I shallbring him into the country where he has been, and his descendants will own it
25 Gli Amaleciti e i Cananei abitano nella valle. Domani voltatevi e partite verso il deserto, per la via del Mar Rosso".	25 (the Amalekites and Canaanites occupy the plain). Tomorrow you wil turn about and go back intothe desert, in the direction of the Sea of Suph.'
26 Il Signore disse a Mosè e ad Aronne:	26 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and Aaron and said:
27 "Fino a quando ci sarà questa comunità cattiva che mormora contro di me? Ho sentito le mormorazioni dei figli d'Israele contro di me.	27 'How much longer am I to endure this perverse community muttering against me? I have heard whatthe Israelites mutter against me.
28 Di' loro: Sulla mia vita, dice il Signore, vi farò come avete detto voi stessi.	28 Say to them, "As I live, Yahweh declares, I shal do to you what I have heard you saying.
29 I vostri cadaveri cadranno in questo deserto e nessuno dei vostri recensiti, da vent'anni in su, voi che avete mormorato contro di me,	29 In this desert your dead bodies wil fal , al you who were counted in the census, from the age oftwenty years and over who have muttered against me.
30 potrà entrare nella terra per cui ho alzato la mia mano per farvi abitare, se non solo Caleb, figlio di Iefunne, e Giosuè, figlio di Nun.	30 I swear none of you will enter the country where I swore most solemnly to settle you, except Calebson of Jephunneh, and Joshua son of Nun.
31 Condurrò in essa i vostri figli, dei quali diceste che saranno un bottino e farò conoscere a loro la terra che avete disprezzato.	31 Your children, who you said would be seized as booty, wil be the ones whom I shal bring in so thatthey get to know the country you disdained,
32 I vostri cadaveri cadranno in questo deserto.	32 but, as for you, your dead bodies wil fall in this desert
33 I vostri figli saranno pastori nel deserto per quarant'anni e porteranno la vostra infedeltà finché i vostri cadaveri siano tutti nel deserto.	33 and your children wil be nomads in the desert for forty years, bearing the consequences of yourfaithlessness, until the last one of you lies dead in the desert.
34 Secondo il numero dei giorni impiegati ad esplorare la terra, quaranta giorni, ogni giorno per un anno, porterete le vostre colpe per quarant'anni e conoscerete la mia ostilità.	34 For forty days you reconnoitred the country. Each day wil count as a year: for forty years you willbear the consequences of your guilt and learn what it means to reject me."
35 Io, il Signore, ho parlato: così farò a tutta questa comunità cattiva che si è riunita contro di me. In questo deserto finiranno e vi moriranno".	35 I, Yahweh, have spoken: this is how I swear to treat this entire perverse community united againstme. In this desert, to the last man, they shall die.'
36 Gli uomini che Mosè aveva inviato ad esplorare la terra, erano tornati e avevano mormorato contro di lui con tutta la comunità, diffondendo il discredito sul paese,	36 The men whom Moses had sent to reconnoitre the country and who on their return had incited thewhole community of Israel to mutter about him by disparaging it,
37 tali uomini, che avevano gettato il discredito sul paese, morirono di un flagello di fronte a Dio.	37 these men who had disparaged the country were al struck dead before Yahweh.
38 Tra quegli uomini che erano andati ad esplorare la terra rimasero in vita Giosuè, figlio di Nun, e Caleb, figlio di Iefunne.	38 Of the men who had gone to reconnoitre the country, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son ofJephunneh were left alive.
39 Mosè disse queste cose a tutti i figli d'Israele e il popolo se ne rattristò molto.	39 When Moses told all the Israelites what had been said, the people set up a great outcry.
40 Si alzarono di buon mattino e salirono sopra la montagna dicendo: "Eccoci, siamo saliti nel luogo per il quale il Signore ha detto che abbiamo peccato".	40 Early next morning they set out for the heights of the hil country saying, 'Look, we wil set out for theplace about which Yahweh said that we have sinned.'
41 Ma Mosè disse: "Perché trasgredite l'ordine del Signore? Questo non riuscirà.	41 To which, Moses said, 'Why disobey Yahweh's order? No success wil come of doing so.
42 Non salite, perché non c'è il Signore in mezzo a voi, non fatevi battere di fronte ai vostri nemici,	42 Do not go, for Yahweh is not among you, and you wil be defeated by your enemies.
43 perché l'Amalecita e il Cananeo sono là davanti a voi e cadrete di spada, perché vi siete voltati dal seguire il Signore, e il Signore non sarà con voi".	43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are ahead of you, and you wil be put to the sword, since youhave turned away from Yahweh, and Yahweh is not with you.'
44 Ma si ostinarono a salire sopra la montagna: l'arca dell'alleanza del Signore e Mosè non si mossero dal mezzo dell'accampamento.	44 All the same, they presumptuously set off for the heights of the hil country. Neither the ark of thecovenant of Yahweh nor Moses left the camp.
45 L'Amalecita e il Cananeo, che abitavano in quella montagna, scesero, li colpirono e li fecero a pezzi fino a Corma.	45 The Amalekites and Canaanites living in those highlands then came down, defeated them andharried them al the way to Hormah.
