1 Una mosca morta manda a male tutto un vasetto di unguento, un po' di stoltezza ha più peso della sapienza e della gloria.	1 More weighty than wisdom or wealth is a little folly!
2 Il sapiente ha il cuore alla sua destra, lo stolto alla sua sinistra.	2 The wise man's understanding turns him to his right; the fool's understanding turns him to his left.
3 Anche per strada, mentre cammina, lo stolto non ha cervello e intanto pensa di tutti che sono stolti.	3 When the fool walks through the street, in his lack of understanding he calls everything foolish.
4 Se l'ira di un potente ti assale, non abbandonare il tuo posto, perché la mansuetudine pone rimedio a errori anche grandi.	4 Should the anger of the ruler burst upon you, forsake not your place; for mildness abates great offenses.
5 Un altro male ho visto sotto il sole: il comportamento avventato di chi comanda.	5 I have seen under the sun another evil, like a mistake that proceeds from the ruler:
6 Lo stolto è stato posto a coprire alte cariche e i potenti giacciono nelle più umili posizioni.	6 a fool put in lofty position while the rich sit in lowly places.
7 Ho visto servi a cavallo e prìncipi camminare a piedi come servi.	7 I have seen slaves on horseback, while princes walked on the ground like slaves.
8 Chi scava una fossa, ci può cadere, e chi demolisce un muro, può essere morso da una serpe.	8 He who digs a pit may fall into it, and he who breaks through a wall may be bitten by a serpent.
9 Chi trasporta pietre, si può ferire, e chi taglia la legna, si può far male.	9 He who moves stones may be hurt by them, and he who chops wood is in danger from it.
10 Se il ferro si ottunde e non gli si fa di nuovo il filo, si deve aumentare lo sforzo: il vantaggio di chi si impegna è la sapienza.	10 If the iron becomes dull, though at first he made easy progress, he must increase his efforts; but the craftsman has the advantage of his skill.
11 Se un serpente non incantato morde l'incantatore, per questo non c'è più speranza.	11 If the serpent bites because it has not been charmed, then there is no advantage for the charmer.
12 Le parole che escono dalla bocca del sapiente gli portano favore, ma quelle che escono dalle labbra dello stolto lo mandano in rovina.	12 Words from the wise man's mouth win favor, but the fool's lips consume him.
13 Se l'inizio dei suoi discorsi è stoltezza, la fine di ciò che dice è funesta follia.	13 The beginning of his words is folly, and the end of his talk is utter madness;
14 Lo stolto moltiplica le parole, per quanto l'uomo non sappia che cosa avverrà, perché nessuno gli può dire che cosa avverrà in futuro.	14 yet the fool multiplies words. Man knows not what is to come, for who can tell him what is to come after him?
15 La fatica dello stolto lo spossa, perché non sa andare in città.	15 When will the fool be weary of his labor, he who knows not the way to the city?
16 Guai a te, o terra governata da un re che è un ragazzo, e i cui grandi pranzano al mattino.	16 Woe to you, O land, whose king was a servant, and whose princes dine in the morning!
17 Felice te, o terra governata da un re nobile, e i cui grandi mangiano quando è il momento.	17 Blessed are you, O land, whose king is of noble birth, and whose princes dine at the right time (for vigor and not in drinking bouts).
18 Per la pigrizia delle mani crolla il soffitto, e per la loro inerzia pioverà in casa.	18 When hands are lazy, the rafters sag; when hands are slack, the house leaks.
19 Per divertirsi mangiano e il vino rallegra la vita: il danaro poi provvede a tutto.	19 Bread and oil call forth merriment and wine makes the living glad, but money answers for everything.
20 Non parlar male del re nemmeno nella tua mente e non parlar male del potente nemmeno nella tua stanza da letto, perché un uccello dell'aria riferirà le tue parole e un signore delle ali dirà i tuoi discorsi.	20 Even in your thoughts do not make light of the king, nor in the privacy of your bedroom revile the rich. Because the birds of the air may carry your voice, a winged creature may tell what you say.
