1 Gionata, vedendo che il tempo lo favoriva, scelse alcuni uomini e li inviò a Roma per confermare e rinnovare l'amicizia con loro.	1 When Jonathan saw that the times favored him, he sent selected men to Rome to confirm and renew his friendship with the Romans.
2 Anche a Sparta e in altri luoghi egli inviò lettere nel medesimo senso.	2 He also sent letters to Sparta and other places for the same purpose.
3 Quelli andarono a Roma, entrarono nel Senato e dissero: "Il sommo sacerdote Gionata e la nazione dei Giudei ci hanno inviato affinché vogliate rinnovare l'amicizia e l'alleanza con essi come prima".	3 After reaching Rome, the men entered the senate chamber and said, "The high priest Jonathan and the Jewish people have sent us to renew the earlier friendship and alliance between you and them."
4 I Romani consegnarono loro lettere per le autorità di ciascun luogo, affinché le facessero proseguire in pace fino alla terra di Giuda.	4 The Romans gave them letters addressed to the authorities in the various places, requesting them to provide the envoys with safe conduct to the land of Judah.
5 Ecco la copia della lettera che Gionata scrisse agli Spartani:	5 This is a copy of the letter that Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:
6 "Gionata, sommo sacerdote, il senato della nazione, i sacerdoti e il resto del popolo dei Giudei agli Spartani, loro fratelli, salute!	6 "Jonathan the high priest, the senate of the nation, the priests, and the rest of the Jewish people send greetings to their brothers the Spartans.
7 Già nel tempo passato fu inviata al sommo sacerdote Onia una lettera da parte di Areo, vostro re, nella quale si diceva che siete nostri fratelli, come risulta dalla copia sotto allegata.	7 Long ago a letter was sent to the high priest Onias from Arius, who then reigned over you, stating that you are our brothers, as the attached copy shows.
8 Onia ricevette con onore l'uomo che gli era stato inviato e accettò la lettera, nella quale si parlava chiaramente di alleanza e di amicizia.	8 Onias welcomed the envoy with honor and received the letter, which clearly referred to alliance and friendship.
9 Noi, dunque, pur non avendone bisogno poiché abbiamo per nostra consolazione i libri santi che sono nelle nostre mani,	9 Though we have no need of these things, since we have for our encouragement the sacred books that are in our possession,
10 abbiamo provato ad inviarvi alcuni per rinnovare la nostra fratellanza e amicizia con voi, in modo da non divenirvi estranei. Infatti sono passati molti anni da quando voi ci inviaste messaggeri.	10 we have ventured to send word to you for the renewal of brotherhood and friendship, so as not to become strangers to you altogether; a long time has passed since your mission to us.
11 Noi, dunque, in ogni tempo e ininterrottamente, nelle feste e negli altri giorni stabiliti, facciamo memoria di voi nei sacrifici che offriamo e nelle preghiere, essendo giusto e conveniente ricordarsi dei fratelli.	11 We, on our part, have never ceased to remember you in the sacrifices and prayers that we offer on our feasts and other appropriate days, as it is right and proper to remember brothers.
12 Ci rallegriamo per la vostra gloria.	12 We likewise rejoice in your renown.
13 Quanto a noi, invece, molte tribolazioni e molte guerre ci hanno stretto all'intorno, poiché i re che sono intorno a noi ci hanno combattuto.	13 But many hardships and wars have beset us, and the kings around us have attacked us.
14 Durante queste guerre non abbiamo voluto molestare né voi né altri alleati e amici nostri,	14 We did not wish to be troublesome to you and to the rest of our allies and friends in these wars;
15 perché abbiamo dal Cielo l'aiuto sicuro per noi e siamo stati liberati dai nemici, che sono stati umiliati.	15 with the help of Heaven for our support, we have been saved from our enemies, and they have been humbled.
16 Avendo, perciò, scelto Numenio figlio di Antioco e Antipatro figlio di Giasone per inviarli presso i Romani a rinnovare l'antica nostra amicizia e alleanza con loro,	16 So we have chosen Numenius, son of Antiochus, and Antipater, son of Jason, and we have sent them to the Romans to renew our former friendship and alliance with them.
17 abbiamo comandato loro di passare anche presso di voi, di salutarvi e di consegnarvi da parte nostra questa lettera riguardante il rinnovamento della nostra fratellanza.	17 We have also ordered them to come to you and greet you, and to deliver to you our letter about the renewal of our brotherhood.
18 Ora, perciò, farete bene a risponderci in proposito".	18 Therefore kindly send us an answer on this matter."
19 Ecco la copia della lettera che essi avevano inviato a Onia:	19 This is a copy of the letter that was sent to Onias:
20 "Areo, re degli Spartani, a Onia, gran sacerdote, salute!	20 "Arius, king of the Spartans, sends greetings to Onias the high priest.
21 Si è trovato in uno scritto, riguardante gli Spartani e i Giudei, che sono fratelli e che sono della stirpe di Abramo.	21 A document has been found stating that the Spartans and the Jews are brothers; both nations descended from Abraham.
22 Or dunque, dal momento che noi abbiamo appreso ciò, farete bene a scriverci riguardo alla vostra prosperità.	22 Now that we have learned this, kindly write to us about your welfare.
23 Da parte nostra, noi vi scriviamo: "Il vostro bestiame e le vostre sostanze sono nostri e i nostri sono vostri". Ordiniamo perciò che di queste cose vi sia data notizia".	23 We, on our part, are informing you that your cattle and your possessions are ours, and ours are yours. We have, therefore, given orders that you should be told of this."
24 Gionata, avendo saputo che i generali di Demetrio erano ritornati con un esercito più numeroso di prima per fargli guerra,	24 Jonathan heard that the generals of Demetrius had returned to attack him with a stronger army than before.
25 partì da Gerusalemme e andò a incontrarli nella regione di Camat, senza dar loro tempo di penetrare nella sua regione.	25 He set out from Jerusalem and went into the country of Hamath to meet them, giving them no time to enter his province.
26 Inviò spie nel loro accampamento e questi, tornati, gli riferirono che si erano già disposti per piombare loro addosso la notte stessa.	26 The spies he had sent into their camp came back and reported that the enemy had made ready to attack the Jews that very night.
27 Come il sole fu tramontato, Gionata comandò ai suoi di vegliare e di tenersi in armi, in modo da essere pronti al combattimento durante tutta la notte; poi dispose sentinelle tutto attorno all'accampamento.	27 Therefore, when the sun set, Jonathan ordered his men to be on guard and to remain armed, ready for combat, throughout the night. He also set outposts all around the camp.
28 Gli avversari, però, come seppero che Gionata e i suoi erano pronti al combattimento, ebbero paura e si spaventarono nel loro cuore. Perciò accesero fuochi nel loro accampamento e fuggirono.	28 When the enemy heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, their hearts sank with fear and dread. They lighted fires and then withdrew.
29 Gionata e i suoi non se ne accorsero fino al mattino, poiché vedevano ardere i fuochi.	29 But because Jonathan and his men were watching the lights burning, they did not know what had happened until morning.
30 Gionata allora si mise ad inseguirli, ma non riuscì a raggiungerli, poiché avevano attraversato il fiume Elèutero.	30 Then Jonathan pursued them, but he could not overtake them, for they had crossed the river Eleutherus.
31 Gionata si diresse contro gli Arabi chiamati Zabadei, li batté e prese le loro spoglie.	31 So Jonathan turned aside against the Arabs who are called Zabadeans, overwhelming and plundering them.
32 Quindi, tolto il campo, andò a Damasco e percorse tutta la regione.	32 Then he marched on to Damascus and traversed that whole region.
33 Anche Simone era partito e si era recato fino ad Ascalòna e alle fortezze vicine, poi piegò su Giaffa e l'occupò.	33 Simon also set out and went as far as Ashkalon and its neighboring strongholds. He then turned to Joppa and occupied it,
34 Egli infatti aveva saputo che volevano consegnare questa fortezza ai partigiani di Demetrio; perciò vi pose una guarnigione e la fece custodire.	34 for he heard that its men had intended to hand over this stronghold to the supporters of Demetrius. He left a garrison there to guard it.
35 Appena tornato, Gionata convocò gli anziani del popolo e con loro decise di edificare fortezze nella Giudea,	35 When Jonathan returned, he assembled the elders of the people, and with them he made plans for building strongholds in Judea,
36 di sopraelevare le mura di Gerusalemme e di alzare una grande barriera fra l'Acra e la città per separarla dalla città, affinché fosse isolata in maniera tale che quelli dell'Acra non potessero né comprare né vendere.	36 for making the walls of Jerusalem still higher, and for erecting a high barrier between the citadel and the city, that would isolate the citadel and so prevent its garrison from commerce with the city.
37 Allora si riunirono per riedificare la città e poiché era caduta una parte del muro del torrente dalla parte di levante, Gionata fece riparare quello che è chiamato Kafenata.	37 The people therefore worked together on building up the city, for part of the east wall above the ravine had collapsed. The quarter called Chaphenatha was also repaired.
38 Simone a sua volta riedificò Adida nella Sefela, la fortificò e la munì di porte e di sbarre.	38 Simon likewise built up Adida in the Shephelah, and strengthened its fortifications by providing them with gates and bars.
39 Trifone, intanto, cercava di divenire re dell'Asia e di cingere il diadema stendendo la mano sul re Antioco.	39 Trypho was determined to become king of Asia, assume the crown, and do away with King Antiochus.
40 Temeva però che Gionata non glielo permettesse e che gli avrebbe fatto guerra. Perciò cercava il modo di catturarlo e di farlo perire. Pertanto si mosse e si recò a Beisan.	40 But he was afraid that Jonathan would not permit him, but would fight against him. Looking for a way to seize and kill him, he set out and reached Beth-shan.
41 Anche Gionata, uscito contro di lui con quarantamila uomini scelti per il combattimento, andò a Beisan.	41 Jonathan marched out against him with forty thousand picked fighting men and came to Beth-shan.
42 Quando Trifone vide che era venuto con un esercito numeroso, ebbe paura di stendere la mano su di lui.	42 But when Trypho saw that Jonathan had arrived with a large army he was afraid to offer him violence.
43 Lo ricevette con onore e lo presentò a tutti i suoi amici, gli offrì doni e ordinò ai suoi amici e alle sue truppe di ubbidirgli come a se stesso.	43 Instead, he received him with honor, introduced him to all his friends, and gave him presents. He also ordered his friends and soldiers to obey him as they would himself.
44 Poi disse a Gionata: "Perché hai scomodato tutta questa gente, se non vi è nessuna guerra tra noi?	44 Then he said to Jonathan: "Why have you put all your soldiers to so much trouble when we are not at war?
45 Ora perciò rimandali alle loro case, scegliti pochi uomini che siano con te e vieni con me a Tolemaide. Io te la consegnerò insieme alle altre fortezze, alle altre truppe e a tutti i funzionari. Poi, presa la via del ritorno, me ne andrò, perché solo per questo son venuto".	45 Pick out a few men to stay with you, send the rest back home, and then come with me to Ptolemais. I will hand it over to you together with other strongholds and their garrisons, as well as the officials, then I will leave and go home. That is why I came here."
46 Gionata gli prestò fede e fece come lui aveva detto. Rimandò le truppe, che ritornarono nella terra di Giuda,	46 Jonathan believed him and did as he said. He dismissed his troops, and they returned to the land of Judah.
47 e trattenne con sé tremila uomini, dei quali ne lasciò duemila in Galilea e soltanto mille andarono con lui.	47 But he kept with him three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand to Galilee while one thousand accompanied him.
48 Come però Gionata fu entrato in Tolemaide, i Tolemaidesi chiusero le porte, lo catturarono e passarono a fil di spada quanti erano andati con lui.	48 Then as soon as Jonathan had entered Ptolemais, the men of the city closed the gates and seized him; all who had entered with him, they killed with the sword.
49 Trifone poi inviò le truppe e la cavalleria in Galilea e nella grande pianura allo scopo di annientare tutti gli uomini di Gionata.	49 Trypho sent soldiers and cavalry to Galilee and the Great Plain to destroy all Jonathan's men.
50 Questi però, avendo saputo che egli era stato catturato e che era perito insieme agli uomini che erano con lui, si esortarono a vicenda e avanzarono schierati, pronti a combattere.	50 These, upon learning that Jonathan had been captured and his companions killed, encouraged one another and went out in compact body ready to fight.
51 Allora gl'inseguitori, vedendo che essi lottavano per la vita, tornarono indietro.	51 As their pursuers saw that they were ready to fight for their lives, they turned back.
52 Vennero perciò tutti in pace nella terra di Giuda; piansero Gionata con i suoi compagni e furono presi da gran timore. Tutto Israele fece un grande lutto.	52 Thus all these men of Jonathan came safely into the land of Judah. They mourned over Jonathan and his men, and were in great fear, and all Israel fell into deep mourning.
53 Tutte le nazioni che erano intorno a loro cercavano allora di distruggerli. Esse infatti dicevano: "Non hanno più un capo né uno che li aiuti. Ora, dunque, facciamo loro guerra e sradichiamo la loro memoria di mezzo agli uomini".	53 All the nations round about sought to destroy them. They said, "Now that they have no leader to help them, let us make war on them and wipe out their memory from among men."
