1 Gionata, vedendo che il tempo lo favoriva, scelse alcuni uomini e li inviò a Roma per confermare e rinnovare l'amicizia con loro.	1 And Jonathan saw that the time served him, and he chose certain men and sent them to Rome, to confirm and to renew the amity with them:
2 Anche a Sparta e in altri luoghi egli inviò lettere nel medesimo senso.	2 And he sent letters to the Spartans, and to other places according to the same form.
3 Quelli andarono a Roma, entrarono nel Senato e dissero: "Il sommo sacerdote Gionata e la nazione dei Giudei ci hanno inviato affinché vogliate rinnovare l'amicizia e l'alleanza con essi come prima".	3 And they went to Rome, and entered into the senate house, and said: Jonathan the high priest, and the nation of the Jews have sent us to renew the amity, and alliance as it was before.
4 I Romani consegnarono loro lettere per le autorità di ciascun luogo, affinché le facessero proseguire in pace fino alla terra di Giuda.	4 And they gave them letters to their governors in every place, to conduct them into the land of Juda with peace.
5 Ecco la copia della lettera che Gionata scrisse agli Spartani:	5 And this is a copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:
6 "Gionata, sommo sacerdote, il senato della nazione, i sacerdoti e il resto del popolo dei Giudei agli Spartani, loro fratelli, salute!	6 Jonathan the high priest, and the ancients of the nation, and the priests, and the rest of the people of the Jews, to the Spartans, their brethren, greeting.
7 Già nel tempo passato fu inviata al sommo sacerdote Onia una lettera da parte di Areo, vostro re, nella quale si diceva che siete nostri fratelli, come risulta dalla copia sotto allegata.	7 There were letters sent long ago to Onias the high priest from Arius who reigned then among you, to signify that you are our brethren, as the copy here underwritten doth specify.
8 Onia ricevette con onore l'uomo che gli era stato inviato e accettò la lettera, nella quale si parlava chiaramente di alleanza e di amicizia.	8 And Onias received the ambassador with honour: and received the letters wherein there was mention made of the alliance, and amity.
9 Noi, dunque, pur non avendone bisogno poiché abbiamo per nostra consolazione i libri santi che sono nelle nostre mani,	9 We, though we needed none of these things, having for our comfort the holy books that are in our hands,
10 abbiamo provato ad inviarvi alcuni per rinnovare la nostra fratellanza e amicizia con voi, in modo da non divenirvi estranei. Infatti sono passati molti anni da quando voi ci inviaste messaggeri.	10 Chose rather to send to you to renew the brotherhood and friendship, lest we should become strangers to you altogether: for there is a long time passed since you sent to us.
11 Noi, dunque, in ogni tempo e ininterrottamente, nelle feste e negli altri giorni stabiliti, facciamo memoria di voi nei sacrifici che offriamo e nelle preghiere, essendo giusto e conveniente ricordarsi dei fratelli.	11 We therefore at all times without ceasing, both in our festivals, and other days, wherein it is convenient, remember you in the sacrifices that we offer, and in our observances, as it is meet, and becoming to remember brethren.
12 Ci rallegriamo per la vostra gloria.	12 And we rejoice at your glory.
13 Quanto a noi, invece, molte tribolazioni e molte guerre ci hanno stretto all'intorno, poiché i re che sono intorno a noi ci hanno combattuto.	13 But we have had many troubles and wars on every side, and the kings that are round about us, have fought against us.
14 Durante queste guerre non abbiamo voluto molestare né voi né altri alleati e amici nostri,	14 But we would not be troublesome to you, nor the rest of our allies and friends in these wars.
15 perché abbiamo dal Cielo l'aiuto sicuro per noi e siamo stati liberati dai nemici, che sono stati umiliati.	15 For we have had help from heaven, and we have been delivered, and our enemies are humbled.
16 Avendo, perciò, scelto Numenio figlio di Antioco e Antipatro figlio di Giasone per inviarli presso i Romani a rinnovare l'antica nostra amicizia e alleanza con loro,	16 We have chosen therefore Numenius the son of Antiochus, and Antipater the son of Jason, and have sent them to the Romans to renew with them the former amity and alliance.
17 abbiamo comandato loro di passare anche presso di voi, di salutarvi e di consegnarvi da parte nostra questa lettera riguardante il rinnovamento della nostra fratellanza.	17 And we have commanded them to go also to you, and to salute you, and to deliver you our letters, concerning the renewing of our brotherhood.
18 Ora, perciò, farete bene a risponderci in proposito".	18 And now you shall do well to give us an answer hereto.
19 Ecco la copia della lettera che essi avevano inviato a Onia:	19 And this is the copy of the letter which he had sent to Onias:
20 "Areo, re degli Spartani, a Onia, gran sacerdote, salute!	20 Arius king of the Spartans to Onias the high priest, greeting.
21 Si è trovato in uno scritto, riguardante gli Spartani e i Giudei, che sono fratelli e che sono della stirpe di Abramo.	21 It is found in writing concerning the Spartans, and the Jews, that they are brethren, and that they are of the stock of Abraham.
22 Or dunque, dal momento che noi abbiamo appreso ciò, farete bene a scriverci riguardo alla vostra prosperità.	22 And now since this is come to our knowledge, you do well to write to us of your prosperity.
23 Da parte nostra, noi vi scriviamo: "Il vostro bestiame e le vostre sostanze sono nostri e i nostri sono vostri". Ordiniamo perciò che di queste cose vi sia data notizia".	23 And we also have written back to you: That our cattle, and our possessions are yours: and yours, ours. We therefore have commanded that these things should be told you.
24 Gionata, avendo saputo che i generali di Demetrio erano ritornati con un esercito più numeroso di prima per fargli guerra,	24 Now Jonathan heard that the generals of Demetrius were come again with a greater army than before to fight against him.
25 partì da Gerusalemme e andò a incontrarli nella regione di Camat, senza dar loro tempo di penetrare nella sua regione.	25 So he went out from Jerusalem, and met them in the land of Amath: for he gave them no time to enter into his country.
26 Inviò spie nel loro accampamento e questi, tornati, gli riferirono che si erano già disposti per piombare loro addosso la notte stessa.	26 And he sent spies into their camp, and they came back and brought him word that they designed to come upon them in the night.
27 Come il sole fu tramontato, Gionata comandò ai suoi di vegliare e di tenersi in armi, in modo da essere pronti al combattimento durante tutta la notte; poi dispose sentinelle tutto attorno all'accampamento.	27 And when the sun was set, Jonathan commanded his men to watch, and to be in arms all night long ready to fight, and he set sentinels round about the camp.
28 Gli avversari, però, come seppero che Gionata e i suoi erano pronti al combattimento, ebbero paura e si spaventarono nel loro cuore. Perciò accesero fuochi nel loro accampamento e fuggirono.	28 And the enemies heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, and they were struck with fear, and dread in their heart: and they kindled fires in their camp.
29 Gionata e i suoi non se ne accorsero fino al mattino, poiché vedevano ardere i fuochi.	29 But Jonathan and they that were with him knew it not till the morning: for they saw the lights burning.
30 Gionata allora si mise ad inseguirli, ma non riuscì a raggiungerli, poiché avevano attraversato il fiume Elèutero.	30 And Jonathan pursued after them, but overtook them not: for they had passed the river Eleutherus.
31 Gionata si diresse contro gli Arabi chiamati Zabadei, li batté e prese le loro spoglie.	31 And Jonathan turned upon the Arabians that are called Zabadeans: and he defeated them, and took the spoils of them.
32 Quindi, tolto il campo, andò a Damasco e percorse tutta la regione.	32 And he went forward, and came to Damascus, and passed through all that country.
33 Anche Simone era partito e si era recato fino ad Ascalòna e alle fortezze vicine, poi piegò su Giaffa e l'occupò.	33 Simon also went forth, and came as far as Ascalon, and the neighbouring fortresses, and he turned aside to Joppe, and took possession of it,
34 Egli infatti aveva saputo che volevano consegnare questa fortezza ai partigiani di Demetrio; perciò vi pose una guarnigione e la fece custodire.	34 (For he heard that they designed to deliver the hold to them that took part with Demetrius,) and he put a garrison there to keep it.
35 Appena tornato, Gionata convocò gli anziani del popolo e con loro decise di edificare fortezze nella Giudea,	35 And Jonathan came back, and called together the ancients of the people, and he took a resolution with them to build fortresses in Judea,
36 di sopraelevare le mura di Gerusalemme e di alzare una grande barriera fra l'Acra e la città per separarla dalla città, affinché fosse isolata in maniera tale che quelli dell'Acra non potessero né comprare né vendere.	36 And to build up walls in Jerusalem, and raise a mount between the castle and the city, to separate it from the city, that so it might have no communication, and that they might neither buy nor sell.
37 Allora si riunirono per riedificare la città e poiché era caduta una parte del muro del torrente dalla parte di levante, Gionata fece riparare quello che è chiamato Kafenata.	37 And they came together to build up the city: for the wall that was upon the brook towards the east was broken down, and he repaired that which is called Caphetetha:
38 Simone a sua volta riedificò Adida nella Sefela, la fortificò e la munì di porte e di sbarre.	38 And Simon built Adiada in Sephela, and fortified it, and set up gates and bars.
39 Trifone, intanto, cercava di divenire re dell'Asia e di cingere il diadema stendendo la mano sul re Antioco.	39 Now when Tryphon had conceived a design to make himself king of Asia, and to take the crown, and to stretch out his hand against king Antiochus:
40 Temeva però che Gionata non glielo permettesse e che gli avrebbe fatto guerra. Perciò cercava il modo di catturarlo e di farlo perire. Pertanto si mosse e si recò a Beisan.	40 Fearing lest Jonathan would not suffer him, but would fight against him: he sought to seize upon him, and to kill him. So he rose up and came to Bethsan.
41 Anche Gionata, uscito contro di lui con quarantamila uomini scelti per il combattimento, andò a Beisan.	41 And Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand men chosen for battle, and came to Bethsan.
42 Quando Trifone vide che era venuto con un esercito numeroso, ebbe paura di stendere la mano su di lui.	42 Now when Tryphon saw that Jonathan came with a great army, he durst not stretch forth his hand against him,
43 Lo ricevette con onore e lo presentò a tutti i suoi amici, gli offrì doni e ordinò ai suoi amici e alle sue truppe di ubbidirgli come a se stesso.	43 But received him with honour, and commended him to all his friends, and gave him presents: and he commanded his troops to obey him, as himself.
44 Poi disse a Gionata: "Perché hai scomodato tutta questa gente, se non vi è nessuna guerra tra noi?	44 And he said to Jonathan: Why hast thou troubled all the people, whereas we have no war?
45 Ora perciò rimandali alle loro case, scegliti pochi uomini che siano con te e vieni con me a Tolemaide. Io te la consegnerò insieme alle altre fortezze, alle altre truppe e a tutti i funzionari. Poi, presa la via del ritorno, me ne andrò, perché solo per questo son venuto".	45 Now therefore send them back to their own houses: and choose thee a few men that may be with thee, and come with me to Ptolemais, and I will deliver it to thee, and the rest of the strong holds, and the army, and all that have any charge, and I will return and go away: for this is the cause of my coming.
46 Gionata gli prestò fede e fece come lui aveva detto. Rimandò le truppe, che ritornarono nella terra di Giuda,	46 And Jonathan believed him, and did as he said: and sent away his army, and they departed into the land of Juda:
47 e trattenne con sé tremila uomini, dei quali ne lasciò duemila in Galilea e soltanto mille andarono con lui.	47 But he kept with him three thousand men: of whom he sent two thousand into Galilee, and one thousand went with him.
48 Come però Gionata fu entrato in Tolemaide, i Tolemaidesi chiusero le porte, lo catturarono e passarono a fil di spada quanti erano andati con lui.	48 Now as soon as Jonathan entered into Ptolemais, they of Ptolemais shut the gates of the city, and took him: and all them that came in with him they slew with the sword.
49 Trifone poi inviò le truppe e la cavalleria in Galilea e nella grande pianura allo scopo di annientare tutti gli uomini di Gionata.	49 Then Tryphon sent an army and horsemen into Galilee, and into the great plain to destroy all Jonathan's company.
50 Questi però, avendo saputo che egli era stato catturato e che era perito insieme agli uomini che erano con lui, si esortarono a vicenda e avanzarono schierati, pronti a combattere.	50 But they, when they understood that Jonathan and all that were with him were taken and slain, encouraged one another, and went out ready for battle.
51 Allora gl'inseguitori, vedendo che essi lottavano per la vita, tornarono indietro.	51 Then they that had come after them, seeing that they stood for their lives, returned back.
52 Vennero perciò tutti in pace nella terra di Giuda; piansero Gionata con i suoi compagni e furono presi da gran timore. Tutto Israele fece un grande lutto.	52 Whereupon they all came peaceably into the land of Juda. And they bewailed Jonathan, and them that had been with him, exceedingly: and Israel mourned with great lamentation.
53 Tutte le nazioni che erano intorno a loro cercavano allora di distruggerli. Esse infatti dicevano: "Non hanno più un capo né uno che li aiuti. Ora, dunque, facciamo loro guerra e sradichiamo la loro memoria di mezzo agli uomini".	53 Then all the heathens that were round about them, sought to destroy them. For they said:
	54 They have no prince, nor any to help them: now therefore let us make war upon them, and take away the memory of them from amongst mem.
