1 Ben-Adàd, re di Aram, radunò l'intero suo esercito: aveva con sé trentadue re, cavalli e carri. Salì ad assediare Samaria e le diede l'assalto.	1 Ben-hadad, king of Aram, gathered all his forces, and accompanied by thirty-two kings with horses and chariotry, proceeded to invest and attack Samaria.
2 Poi inviò messaggeri nella città, ad Acab, re d'Israele,	2 He sent couriers to Ahab, king of Israel, within the city,
3 i quali gli dissero: "Così parla Ben-Adàd: "Il tuo argento e il tuo oro appartengono a me, le tue donne e i tuoi figli rimangono per te".	3 and said to him, "This is Ben-hadad's message: 'Your silver and gold are mine, and your wives and your promising sons are mine.'"
4 Il re d'Israele rispose in questi termini: "Come tu dici, o mio signore re. Io stesso e tutto quanto mi appartiene siamo tuoi".	4 The king of Israel answered, "As you say, my lord king, I and all I have are yours."
5 Ma i messaggeri ritornarono a dire: "Così parla Ben-Adàd: "Io ho mandato a dirti che devi darmi il tuo argento, il tuo oro, le tue donne e i tuoi figli.	5 But the couriers came again and said, "This is Ben-hadad's message: 'I sent you word to give me your silver and gold, your wives and your sons.
6 Quando domani, a quest'ora, ti manderò i miei servi, essi frugheranno il tuo palazzo e le case dei tuoi servi, s'impadroniranno di quanto tornerà gradito agli occhi loro e lo porteranno via".	6 Now, however, at this time tomorrow I will send my servants to you, and they shall ransack your house and the houses of your servants. They shall seize and take away whatever they consider valuable.'"
7 Allora il re d'Israele convocò tutti gli anziani del paese e disse: "Vi accorgete facilmente che costui mi vuole del male; infatti mi ha mandato a chiedere le mie donne, i miei figli, dopo che io non gli avevo rifiutato né il mio argento né il mio oro".	7 The king of Israel then summoned all the elders of the land and said: "Understand clearly that this man wants to ruin us. When he sent to me for my wives and sons, my silver and my gold, I did not refuse him."
8 Tutti gli anziani e tutto il popolo gli risposero: "Non prestare ascolto né acconsentire!".	8 All the elders and all the people said to him, "Do not listen. Do not give in."
9 Allora Acab disse ai messaggeri di Ben-Adàd: "Riferite al re vostro signore: "Farò tutto quello che hai richiesto al tuo servo la prima volta, ma non posso adempiere quest'altra richiesta". I messaggeri partirono e riferirono la cosa.	9 Accordingly he directed the couriers of Ben-hadad, "Say to my lord the king, 'I will do all that you demanded of your servant the first time. But this I cannot do.'" The couriers left and reported this.
10 Allora Ben-Adàd mandò a dirgli: "Che gli dèi mi facciano questo male e mi aggiungano ancora quest'altro, se la polvere di Samaria basterà a riempire una mano a tutto il popolo che mi segue".	10 Ben-hadad then sent him the message, "May the gods do thus and so to me if there is enough dust in Samaria to make handfuls for all my followers."
11 A sua volta il re d'Israele replicò: "Ditegli: "Chi indossa le armi non si vanti come chi le depone".	11 The king of Israel replied, "Tell him, 'It is not for the man who is buckling his armor to boast as though he were taking it off.'"
12 Quando Ben-Adàd udì questa risposta -- egli stava bevendo assieme ai re sotto le tende -- comandò ai suoi servi: "Disponetevi all'attacco"; ed essi si disposero contro la città.	12 Ben-hadad was drinking in the pavilions with the kings when he heard this reply. "Prepare the assault," he commanded his servants; and they made ready to storm the city.
13 Ed ecco un profeta s'avvicinò ad Acab, re d'Israele, e gli disse: "Così dice il Signore: "Hai visto tutta quella grande moltitudine? Ecco oggi stesso te la darò in mano e così saprai che io sono il Signore".	13 Then a prophet came up to Ahab, king of Israel and said: "The LORD says, 'Do you see all this huge army? When I deliver it up to you today, you will know that I am the LORD.'"
14 Acab disse: "Per mezzo di chi?". Quegli rispose: "Così dice il Signore: "Per mezzo dei giovani al servizio dei capi dei distretti". L'altro domandò ancora: "Chi inizierà la battaglia?". Il profeta rispose: "Tu stesso!".	14 But Ahab asked, "Through whom will it be delivered up?" He answered, "The LORD says, 'Through the retainers of the governors of the provinces.'" Then Ahab asked, "Who is to attack?" He replied, "You are."
15 Allora il re passò in rassegna i giovani ch'erano al servizio dei capi dei distretti: erano in tutto duecentotrentadue. Poi passò in rassegna tutto il popolo, tutti i figli d'Israele: erano settemila.	15 So Ahab called up the retainers of the governors of the provinces, two hundred thirty-two of them. Behind them he mustered all the Israelite soldiery, who numbered seven thousand.
16 Essi fecero una sortita sul mezzogiorno, mentre Ben-Adàd si ubriacava sotto le tende assieme ai trentadue re suoi alleati.	16 They marched out at noon, while Ben-hadad was drinking heavily in the pavilions with the thirty-two kings who were his allies.
17 Per primi uscirono i giovani al servizio dei capi dei distretti. E si mandò ad avvertire Ben-Adàd dicendogli: "Sono usciti uomini da Samaria".	17 When the retainers of the governors of the provinces marched out first, Ben-hadad received word that some men had marched out of Samaria.
18 Egli rispose: "Se essi sono usciti con intenzioni pacifiche, catturateli vivi; se sono usciti per combattere, catturateli vivi ugualmente!".	18 He answered, "Whether they have come out for peace or for war, in any case take them alive."
19 Dalla città erano usciti i giovani al servizio dei capi dei distretti e l'esercito dietro di loro.	19 But when these had come out of the city-the soldiers of the governors of the provinces with the army following them--
20 Ciascuno uccise il suo uomo. Aram si diede alla fuga e Israele lo inseguì. Ben-Adàd, re di Aram, si salvò fuggendo a cavallo; con lui erano alcuni cavalieri.	20 each of them struck down his man. The Arameans fled with Israel pursuing them, while Ben-hadad, king of Aram, escaped on a chariot steed.
21 Il re d'Israele uscì, catturò i cavalli e i carri e inflisse ad Aram una grande sconfitta.	21 The king of Israel went out, took the horses and chariots, and inflicted a severe defeat on Aram.
22 Allora il profeta s'avvicinò al re d'Israele e gli disse: "Orsù, fatti coraggio e considera bene quello che devi fare, poiché al volgere dell'anno il re di Aram salirà di nuovo contro di te".	22 Then the prophet went up to the king of Israel and said to him: "Go, regroup your forces. Mark well what you do, for at the beginning of the year the king of Aram will attack you."
23 I servi del re di Aram gli dissero: "Il loro Dio è un Dio delle montagne, per questo ci hanno vinti; ma se li impegneremo in battaglia nella pianura, certamente li vinceremo.	23 On the other hand, the servants of the king of Aram said to him: "Their gods are gods of mountains. That is why they defeated us. But if we fight them on level ground, we shall be sure to defeat them.
24 Fa' dunque in questo modo: rimuovi tutti i re dal loro posto sostituendoli con governatori.	24 This is what you must do: Take the kings from their posts and put prefects in their places.
25 Per te recluta un esercito pari a quello che hai perso, con altrettanti cavalli e carri; quindi diamo loro battaglia nella pianura e certamente li vinceremo". Il re ascoltò il loro consiglio e fece così.	25 Mobilize an army as large as the army that has deserted you, horse for horse, chariot for chariot. Let us fight them on level ground, and we shall surely defeat them." He took their advice and did this.
26 Al volgere dell'anno Ben-Adàd mobilitò gli Aramei e salì ad Afek, per dare battaglia ad Israele.	26 At the beginning of the year, Ben-hadad mobilized Aram and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.
27 I figli d'Israele furono mobilitati e provvisti di viveri, poi mossero loro incontro. I figli d'Israele si accamparono di fronte a loro, come due greggi di capre, mentre gli Aramei riempivano la regione.	27 The Israelites, too, were called to arms and supplied with provisions; then they went out to engage the foe. The Israelites, encamped opposite them, seemed like a couple of small flocks of goats, while Aram covered the countryside.
28 Allora un uomo di Dio s'avvicinò al re d'Israele e disse: "Così dice il Signore: "Poiché Aram ha asserito che il Signore è Dio delle montagne, ma non delle pianure, ti darò in mano tutta questa grande moltitudine e così saprai che io sono il Signore".	28 A man of God came up and said to the king of Israel: "The LORD says, 'Because Aram has said the LORD is a god of mountains, not a god of plains, I will deliver up to you all this large army, that you may know I am the LORD.'"
29 Per sette giorni stettero accampati gli uni di fronte agli altri, ma al settimo giorno si ingaggiò la battaglia e i figli d'Israele uccisero in un sol giorno centomila fanti di Aram.	29 They were encamped opposite each other for seven days. On the seventh day battle was joined, and the Israelites struck down one hundred thousand foot soldiers of Aram in one day.
30 I superstiti fuggirono nella città di Afek, ma le mura caddero sui ventisettemila superstiti. Anche Ben-Adàd fuggì e andò nella città a nascondersi da una stanza all'altra.	30 The survivors, twenty-seven thousand of them, fled into the city of Aphek, and there the wall collapsed. Ben-hadad, too, fled, and took refuge within the city, in an inside room.
31 I suoi servi pertanto gli dissero: "Ecco, noi abbiamo sentito dire che i re della casa d'Israele sono re clementi; indossiamo sacchi ai fianchi e mettiamoci corde sulla testa e andiamo dal re d'Israele; chissà che non ti conservi la vita".	31 His servants said to him: "We have heard that the kings of the land of Israel are merciful kings. Allow us, therefore, to garb ourselves in sackcloth, with cords around our heads, and go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will spare your life."
32 Essi cinsero i fianchi di sacchi e le teste di corda e andarono dal re d'Israele a dirgli: "Ben-Adàd, tuo servo, dice: "Salvami la vita!". Quegli rispose: "E' ancora vivo? Egli è mio fratello!".	32 So they dressed in sackcloth girded at the waist, and wearing cords around their heads, they went to the king of Israel. "Your servant Ben-hadad pleads for his life," they said. "Is he still alive?" the king asked. "He is my brother."
33 Quegli uomini presero ciò per buon auspicio e s'affrettarono ad averne l'assicurazione da lui domandandogli: "Ben-Adàd è tuo fratello?". Acab rispose: "Andate a prenderlo!". Allora Ben-Adàd gli uscì incontro ed egli lo fece salire sul suo carro.	33 Hearing this as a good omen, the men quickly took him at his word and said, "Ben-hadad is your brother." He answered, "Go and get him." When Ben-hadad came out to him, the king had him mount his chariot.
34 Ben-Adàd gli disse: "Restituirò le città che mio padre tolse a tuo padre e tu stabilirai piazze commerciali a Damasco, come mio padre le aveva stabilite in Samaria". Acab disse: "A questo patto ti lascerò libero". Acab concluse questo trattato con lui e lo lasciò in libertà.	34 Ben-hadad said to him, "I will restore the cities which my father took from your father, and you may make yourself bazaars in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria." "On these terms," Ahab replied, "I will set you free." So he made an agreement with him and then set him free.
35 Uno dei discepoli dei profeti disse al suo compagno per ordine del Signore: "Colpiscimi!"; ma questi si rifiutò di colpirlo.	35 One of the guild prophets was prompted by the LORD to say to his companion, "Strike me." But he refused to strike him.
36 Allora gli disse il primo: "Poiché non hai ascoltato la voce del Signore, ecco che, appena ti sarai allontanato da me, il leone ti ucciderà". Infatti non appena egli si fu allontanato da lui, il leone lo trovò e lo uccise.	36 Then he said to him, "Since you did not obey the voice of the LORD, a lion will kill you when you leave me." When they parted company, a lion came upon him and killed him.
37 Quegli trovò un altro uomo a cui disse: "Colpiscimi!". Questi lo colpì e lo ferì.	37 The prophet met another man and said, "Strike me." The man struck him a blow and wounded him.
38 Allora il profeta andò ad aspettare il re sulla strada e si rese irriconoscibile con una benda sugli occhi.	38 The prophet went on and waited for the king on the road, having disguised himself with a bandage over his eyes.
39 Mentre passava il re, gli gridò: "Il tuo servo si era gettato nella mischia, quand'ecco un uomo si trasse in disparte e mi condusse un individuo dicendo: "Prendi in custodia quest'uomo! Qualora venisse a mancare, la tua vita pagherà per la sua vita oppure mi pagherai un talento d'argento".	39 As the king was passing, he called out to the king and said: "Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and suddenly someone turned and brought me a man and said, 'Guard this man. If he is missing, you shall have to pay for his life with your life or pay out a talent of silver.'
40 Or mentre il tuo servo era occupato qua e là quello scomparve". Il re d'Israele gli disse: "Ecco il tuo verdetto! Tu stesso l'hai pronunciato!".	40 But while your servant was looking here and there, the man disappeared." The king of Israel said to him, "That is your sentence. You have decided it yourself."
41 Egli allora s'affrettò a togliersi la benda dagli occhi e il re d'Israele si accorse ch'egli era uno dei profeti.	41 He immediately removed the bandage from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets.
42 Questi gli disse: "Così parla il Signore: "Poiché hai lasciato scappare l'uomo da me votato all'anatèma, la tua vita sarà al posto della sua e il tuo popolo al posto del suo".	42 He said to him: "The LORD says, 'Because you have set free the man I doomed to destruction, your life shall pay for his life, your people for his people.'"
43 Il re d'Israele si diresse verso casa, triste e adirato, e giunse a Samaria.	43 Disturbed and angry, the king of Israel went off homeward and entered Samaria.
