1 Quand'ecco, un uomo di Dio venne da Giuda a Betel con un messaggio del Signore, mentre Geroboamo si trovava presso l'altare per bruciare aromi.	1 And behold, by the word of the Lord, a man of God went from Judah to Bethel, when Jeroboam was standing over the altar, and burning incense.
2 Su ordine del Signore quegli gridò contro l'altare: "Altare, altare! Così parla il Signore: "Ecco, un figlio nascerà alla casa di Davide che si chiamerà Giosia; questi immolerà su di te i sacerdoti delle alture, che bruciano su di te gli aromi e brucerà su di te ossa umane".	2 And by the word of the Lord, he cried out against the altar. And he said: “O altar, O altar! Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, a son will be born to the house of David, Josiah by name. And upon you, he will immolate the priests of the high places, who now burn incense upon you. And upon you, he will burn up the bones of men.’ ”
3 Nello stesso tempo egli diede anche un segno dicendo: "Questo è il segno che il Signore ha parlato: ecco, l'altare si spezzerà e si spanderà la cenere che vi si trova sopra".	3 And he gave a sign on the same day, saying: “This will be the sign that the Lord has spoken. Behold, the altar shall be torn apart, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.”
4 Quando il re udì la parola che l'uomo di Dio aveva lanciato contro l'altare a Betel, stese verso di lui la mano ritirandola dall'altare e dicendo: "Afferratelo!"; ma la mano che aveva teso contro di lui si seccò e non poté più farla ritornare a sé.	4 And when the king had heard the word of the man of God, which he had cried out against the altar at Bethel, he extended his hand from the altar, saying, “Apprehend him!” But his hand, which he had extended against him, withered. And he was unable to draw it back to himself.
5 L'altare si spezzò e la cenere si sparse giù dall'altare, secondo il segno che l'uomo di Dio aveva dato su ordine del Signore.	5 Also, the altar was torn apart, and the ashes were poured out from the altar, in accord with the sign that the man of God had predicted by the word of the Lord.
6 Il re intervenne di nuovo e disse all'uomo di Dio: "Placa il volto del Signore tuo Dio e prega per me affinché la mia mano ritorni a me". L'uomo di Dio placò il volto del Signore e la mano del re ritornò a lui, com'era prima.	6 And the king said to the man of God, “Entreat the face of the Lord your God, and pray for me, so that my hand may be restored to me.” And the man of God prayed before the face of the Lord, and the hand of the king was restored to him, and it became as it had been before.
7 Quindi il re disse all'uomo di Dio: "Vieni con me a casa e ristorati! Ti darò anche un regalo".	7 Then the king said to the man of God: “Come home with me, so that you may dine. And I will give you gifts.”
8 Ma l'uomo di Dio disse al re: "Anche se mi dessi la metà della tua casa, non verrò con te. In questo luogo non mangerò pane né berrò acqua,	8 And the man of God responded to the king: “Even if you will give me one half part of your house, I will not go with you, nor eat bread, nor drink water in this place.
9 perché così mi è stato ordinato da parte del Signore: "Non mangerai pane né berrai acqua né ritornerai per la strada per cui sei venuto".	9 For so it was commanded to me by the word of the Lord, ordering: ‘You shall not eat bread, and you shall not drink water, nor shall you return by the way that you came.’ ”
10 Egli dunque se ne andò per un'altra strada e non ritornò per la strada per cui era venuto a Betel.	10 Then he departed by another way, and he did not return along the way that he had traveled to Bethel.
11 A Betel dimorava un vecchio profeta e i suoi figli vennero e gli raccontarono tutto quello che l'uomo di Dio aveva fatto in quel giorno a Betel e riferirono al loro padre le parole che egli aveva detto al re.	11 Now a certain elderly prophet was living in Bethel. His sons went to him, and they described to him all the works which the man of God had accomplished on that day in Bethel. And they described to their father the words that he had spoken to the king.
12 Questi domandò loro: "Per quale strada se n'è andato?". I figli gli mostrarono la via per cui se n'era andato l'uomo di Dio venuto da Giuda.	12 And their father said to them, “By which way did he depart?” His sons showed him the way by which the man of God, who had come from Judah, had departed.
13 Allora egli disse ai suoi figli: "Sellatemi l'asino". Gli sellarono l'asino ed egli vi salì sopra.	13 And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And when they had saddled it, he climbed on,
14 Rincorse l'uomo di Dio e lo trovò seduto sotto il terebinto. Allora gli domandò: "Sei tu l'uomo di Dio venuto da Giuda?". Quegli rispose: "Sono io".	14 and he went away after the man of God. And he found him sitting under a terebinth tree. And he said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” And he responded, “I am.”
15 L'altro gli disse: "Vieni con me a casa per mangiare un boccone".	15 And he said to him, “Come home with me, so that you may eat bread.”
16 Ma quegli rispose: "Non posso tornare con te, né accompagnarti né mangiare pane né bere acqua in questo luogo,	16 But he said: “I am not able to turn back, nor to go with you. Neither will I eat bread, or drink water in this place.
17 poiché così mi è stato ordinato da parte del Signore: "Non mangerai pane né berrai acqua e neppure ritornerai percorrendo la strada per cui sei venuto".	17 For the Lord has spoken to me, by the word of the Lord, saying, “You shall not eat bread, and you shall not drink water in that place, nor shall you return by the way that you arrived.”
18 Ma quegli riprese: "Anch'io sono profeta come te e un angelo mi ha detto per ordine del Signore: "Riconducilo con te a casa tua perché mangi pane e beva acqua". Così lo ingannò.	18 And he said to him: “I, too, am a prophet like you. And an Angel spoke to me, by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Lead him back with you to your house, so that he may eat bread, and drink water.’ ” And so he deceived him.
19 Egli ritornò allora con lui, mangiò pane nella sua casa e bevve acqua.	19 And he led him back with him. Then he ate bread and drank water in his house.
20 Ora, mentre essi stavano seduti a tavola, la parola del Signore fu indirizzata al profeta che lo aveva fatto tornare indietro,	20 And while they were sitting at table, the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had led him back.
21 ed egli gridò all'uomo di Dio venuto da Giuda: "Così dice il Signore: "Poiché ti sei ribellato all'ordine del Signore e non hai osservato il comando che ti aveva dato il Signore tuo Dio,	21 And he cried out to the man of God who had arrived from Judah, saying: “Thus says the Lord: Because you were not obedient to the mouth of the Lord, and you did not keep the commandment that the Lord your God instructed to you,
22 ma sei ritornato, hai mangiato pane e bevuto acqua nel luogo dove egli ti aveva detto di non mangiare pane né di bere acqua, il tuo cadavere non entrerà nel sepolcro dei tuoi antenati".	22 and you turned back, and ate bread, and drank water in the place where he commanded you that you should not eat bread, nor drink water: your dead body shall not be carried back to the sepulcher of your fathers.”
23 Dopo che ebbero mangiato pane e bevuto acqua, gli sellò l'asino ed egli fece ritorno.	23 And when he had eaten and had drunk, he saddled his donkey for the prophet whom he had led back.
24 Mentre se ne andava, trovò per la strada un leone che lo uccise. Il suo cadavere giacque sulla strada, mentre l'asino gli stava a fianco e anche il leone stava a fianco del cadavere.	24 And when he had departed, a lion found him along the way, and it killed him, and his dead body was left upon the road. Now the donkey was standing beside him. And the lion was standing beside the dead body.
25 Or alcuni uomini passarono di là e videro il cadavere giacere sulla strada e il leone che stava a fianco del cadavere. Essi andarono a diffondere la notizia nella città in cui abitava il vecchio profeta.	25 And behold, men who were passing by saw the dead body lying in the road, with the lion standing beside the body. And they went and made it widely known in the city where that elderly prophet was living.
26 Come l'udì il profeta che l'aveva fatto tornare dalla sua strada, disse: "Costui è certamente l'uomo di Dio che ha trasgredito l'ordine del Signore e che il Signore ha dato in preda al leone, il quale lo ha sbranato e ucciso, secondo la parola che il Signore gli aveva detto".	26 And when that prophet, who had led him back from the way, had heard it, he said: “It is the man of God, who was disobedient to the mouth of the Lord. And the Lord has delivered him to the lion. And it has torn him apart and killed him, in accord with the word of the Lord, which he spoke to him.”
27 Disse poi ai suoi figli: "Sellatemi l'asino". Glielo sellarono ed egli	27 And he said to his sons, “Saddle a donkey for me.” And when they had saddled it,
28 andò e trovò il cadavere che giaceva sulla strada, l'asino e il leone che stavano a fianco del cadavere; il leone non aveva divorato il cadavere né sbranato l'asino.	28 and he had departed, he found the dead body lying on the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside the dead body. The lion did not eat from the dead body, nor did it harm the donkey.
29 Il profeta prese il cadavere dell'uomo di Dio, lo caricò sull'asino, lo riportò indietro in città per farne il lamento funebre e seppellirlo.	29 Then the prophet took the dead body of the man of God, and he placed it upon the donkey, and returning, he brought it into the city of the elderly prophet, so that he might mourn for him.
30 Depose il cadavere nel suo sepolcro e fece il lamento funebre su di lui: "Ahi, fratello mio!".	30 And he placed his dead body in his own sepulcher. And they mourned for him, saying: “Alas! Alas! My brother!”
31 Dopo averlo seppellito, disse ai propri figli: "Quando sarò morto, mi seppellirete nel sepolcro in cui è sepolto l'uomo di Dio, porrete le mie ossa accanto alle sue ossa,	31 And when they had mourned over him, he said to his sons: “When I will have died, bury me in the sepulcher in which the man of God was buried. Place my bones beside his bones.
32 perché certamente si realizzerà la parola che egli ha pronunciato, per ordine del Signore, contro l'altare di Betel e contro tutti i santuari delle alture che si trovano nelle città di Samaria".	32 For certainly, the word will arrived, which he predicted by the word of the Lord, against the altar, which is in Bethel, and against all the shrines of the high places, which are in the cities of Samaria.”
33 Anche dopo questo fatto Geroboamo non si allontanò dalla strada cattiva, ma continuò a scegliere dal popolo comune sacerdoti delle alture: riempiva la mano a chiunque lo desiderasse e quegli diventava sacerdote delle alture.	33 After these words, Jeroboam did not turn back from his very evil way. Instead, to the contrary, he made priests for the high places out of the least of the people. Whosoever was willing, he filled his hand, and he became a priest of the high places.
34 Questo fu il peccato per la casa di Geroboamo, che la condusse alla rovina e allo sterminio dalla faccia della terra.	34 And for this reason, the house of Jeroboam sinned, and was uprooted, and was wiped from the face of the earth.
