LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Dall'Egitto Abram risalì verso il Negheb con la moglie e tutto il suo avere. Lot era con lui.	1 From Egypt Abram returned to the Negeb with his wife and al he possessed, and Lot with him.
2 Abram era molto ricco di bestiame, di argento e di oro.	2 Abram was very rich in livestock, silver and gold.
3 Dal Negheb ritornò a tappe fino a Betel, fino al luogo dov'era già prima la sua tenda, tra Betel e Ai,	3 By stages he went from the Negeb to Bethel, where he had first pitched his tent, between Bethel andAi,
4 al luogo dell'altare che egli aveva eretto prima; ivi Abram invocò il nome del Signore.	4 at the place where he had formerly erected the altar. There Abram invoked the name of Yahweh.
5 Anche Lot, che viaggiava con Abram, possedeva greggi, armenti e attendamenti,	5 Lot, who was travelling with Abram, had flocks and cattle of his own, and tents too.
6 e il territorio non bastava ad una loro abitazione comune, perché avevano beni troppo grandi per poter abitare insieme.	6 The land was not sufficient to accommodate them both at once, for they had too many possessions tobe able to live together.
7 Nacque perciò una lite tra i pastori del bestiame di Abram e i pastori del bestiame di Lot, mentre i Cananei e i Perizziti abitavano nel paese.	7 Dispute broke out between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and those of Lot. (The Canaanites andPerizzites were living in the country at the time.)
8 Abram disse allora a Lot: "Deh, non ci sia discordia tra me e te, tra i miei pastori e i tuoi, perché noi siamo fratelli!	8 Accordingly Abram said to Lot, 'We do not want discord between us or between my herdsmen andyours, for we are kinsmen.
9 Non sta forse davanti a te tutto il paese? Sepàrati da me. Se tu vai a sinistra, io andrò verso destra, ma se vai a destra, me ne andrò verso sinistra".	9 Is not the whole land open before you? Go in the opposite direction to me: if you take the left, I shalgo right; if you take the right, I shal go left.'
10 Allora Lot alzò gli occhi ed osservò tutta la valle del Giordano, perché era tutta irrigata -- prima che il Signore distruggesse Sòdoma e Gomorra -- come il giardino del Signore, come il paese d'Egitto, fin verso Zoar.	10 Looking round, Lot saw all the Jordan plain, irrigated everywhere -- this was before Yahwehdestroyed Sodom and Gomorrah-like the garden of Yahweh or the land of Egypt, as far as Zoar.
11 E Lot scelse per sé tutta la valle del Giordano e trasportò le tende verso oriente. Così si separarono l'uno dall'altro.	11 So Lot chose all the Jordan plain for himself and moved off eastwards. Thus they parted company:
12 Abram risiedette nel paese di Canaan e Lot risiedette nelle città della valle e acquistò il diritto di pascolare vicino a Sòdoma,	12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan; Lot settled among the cities of the plain, pitching his tents onthe outskirts of Sodom.
13 nonostante che la gente di Sòdoma fosse molto cattiva e peccatrice.	13 Now the people of Sodom were vicious and great sinners against Yahweh.
14 Il Signore disse ad Abram, dopo che Lot si fu separato da lui: "Alza gli occhi, e dal luogo dove stai, spingi lo sguardo verso settentrione e mezzogiorno, verso oriente ed occidente.	14 Yahweh said to Abram after Lot had parted company from him, 'Look al round from where you are,to north and south, to east and west,
15 Tutto il paese che tu vedi, io lo darò a te e alla tua discendenza, per sempre.	15 for al the land within sight I shal give to you and your descendants for ever.
16 Renderò la tua discendenza come la polvere della terra; se qualcuno può contare il pulviscolo della terra, anche i tuoi discendenti potrà contare!	16 I shal make your descendants like the dust on the ground; when people succeed in counting thespecks of dust on the ground, then they wil be able to count your descendants too!
17 Alzati, percorri il paese in lungo e in largo, perché io lo darò a te!".	17 On your feet! Travel the length and breadth of the country, for I mean to give it to you.'
18 Poi Abram acquistò il diritto di pascolare e di andarsi a stabilire alla Quercia di Mamre, che è ad Ebron, e vi costruì un altare al Signore.	18 So Abram moved his tent and went to settle at the Oak of Mamre, at Hebron, and there he built analtar to Yahweh.
