| 1 - I figliuoli d'Israele aveano fatto un giuramento in Masfa, dicendo: «Nessuno di noi darà ai figli di Beniamino una delle sue figlie in moglie». | 1 Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah, "No one of us shall give his daughter in marriage to Benjamin." |
| 2 Venuti poi tutti in Silo, alla casa di Dio, e postisi a sedere a cospetto di lui alzarono fino a sera la loro voce e con grandi grida cominciarono a dire piangendo: | 2 And the people came to Bethel, and sat there till evening before God, and they lifted up their voices and wept bitterly. |
| 3 «Perchè mai, o Signore Dio d'Israele, è stato commesso un così gran male fra il tuo popolo, che oggi ci sia stata tolta una tribù?». | 3 And they said, "O LORD, the God of Israel, why has this come to pass in Israel, that there should be today one tribe lacking in Israel?" |
| 4 Nel giorno seguente, levatisi di buon mattino, costruirono un altare e offrirono colà olocausti e vittime pacifiche e dissero: | 4 And on the morrow the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. |
| 5 «Quale fra tutte le tribù di Israele non è salita con l'esercito del Signore?», giacchè essi si erano obbligati con grande giuramento quando erano in Masfa di uccidere quelli che avessero mancato. | 5 And the people of Israel said, "Which of all the tribes of Israel did not come up in the assembly to the LORD?" For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the LORD to Mizpah, saying, "He shall be put to death." |
| 6 I figli d'Israele, pentiti [di quanto aveano fatto] a riguardo del loro fratello Beniamino, cominciarono a dire: «È stata tolta una delle tribù d'Israele. | 6 And the people of Israel had compassion for Benjamin their brother, and said, "One tribe is cut off from Israel this day. |
| 7 Donde potranno essi trovare le mogli, mentre noi abbiamo tutti d'accordo giurato di non dare loro le nostre figliuole?». | 7 What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them any of our daughters for wives?" |
| 8 Perciò dissero: «Chi è di tutte le tribù d'Israele quella che non comparve innanzi al Signore in Masfa?». E si trovò che gli abitanti di Jabes Galaad non avevano fatto parte di quell'esercito. | 8 And they said, "What one is there of the tribes of Israel that did not come up to the LORD to Mizpah?" And behold, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh-gilead, to the assembly. |
| 9 E anche in quel tempo in cui si trovavano a Silo nessuno di loro era presente. | 9 For when the people were mustered, behold, not one of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was there. |
| 10 Mandarono quindi diecimila uomini fra i più forti, ai quali ordinarono: «Andate e passate a fil di spada gli abitanti di Jabes Galaad, tanto le donne quanto i loro figliuoli. | 10 So the congregation sent thither twelve thousand of their bravest men, and commanded them, "Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword; also the women and the little ones. |
| 11 Ed ecco quello che dovete fare: uccidete tutti i maschi e le donne, che hanno conosciuto uomo, ma conservate in vita le vergini». | 11 This is what you shall do; every male and every woman that has lain with a male you shall utterly destroy." |
| 12 Furono così trovate quattrocento vergini in Jabes Galaad, che non aveano conosciuto il talamo nuziale e che furono condotte all'accampamento in Silo, nella terra di Canaan. | 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins who had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan. |
| 13 Vennero pure mandati messi ai figli di Beniamino, che stavano sulla roccia di Remmon, e comandarono loro di accoglierli pacificamente. | 13 Then the whole congregation sent word to the Benjaminites who were at the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them. |
| 14 Venuti i figli di Beniamino in quel tempo furono date loro in moglie le figliuole di Jabes Galaad; ma non poterono trovarne altre da dare ad essi nella stessa maniera. | 14 And Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead; but they did not suffice for them. |
| 15 Tutto Israele ebbe grande dolore e fece penitenza della distruzione di una delle tribù d'Israele. | 15 And the people had compassion on Benjamin because the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel. |
| 16 Gli anziani dissero: «Come provvederemo agli altri che non ebbero moglie? Tutte le donne di Beniamino sono state uccise, | 16 Then the elders of the congregation said, "What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?" |
| 17 e a noi deve stare molto a cuore di provvedere diligentemente che una delle tribù d'Israele non abbia a perire. | 17 And they said, "There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, that a tribe be not blotted out from Israel. |
| 18 Noi non possiamo infatti loro dare le nostre figliuole, stretti come siamo da un giuramento e da una maledizione, mentre abbiamo dichiarato maledetto chiunque avrebbe dato a Beniamino in moglie una delle sue figliuole». | 18 Yet we cannot give them wives of our daughters." For the people of Israel had sworn, "Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin." |
| 19 Presero perciò questa risoluzione e dissero: «Ecco la solennità anniversaria del Signore nella città di Silo, la quale è situata a settentrione di Betel, e a Oriente della via che da Betel conduce a Sichem e a mezzogiorno della città di Lebona», | 19 So they said, "Behold, there is the yearly feast of the LORD at Shiloh, which is north of Bethel, on the east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah." |
| 20 e comandarono ai figli di Beniamino e dissero: «Andate a nascondervi fra i vigneti e | 20 And they commanded the Benjaminites, saying, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards, |
| 21 quando vedrete giungere le figlie di Silo, per danzare secondo il solito le loro danze, uscite tosto dai vigneti e rapitevi ciascuno una moglie e andatevene nella terra di Beniamino. | 21 and watch; if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards and seize each man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. |
| 22 Quando verranno i loro padri e i loro fratelli e cominceranno a lamentarsi e a far causa contro di voi, noi diremo: - Abbiate pietà di loro; non le hanno rapite in qualità di guerrieri e di vincitori ma perchè quando vi hanno pregato, voi non voleste accondiscendere e perciò la colpa è vostra -». | 22 And when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we will say to them, 'Grant them graciously to us; because we did not take for each man of them his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.'" |
| 23 Fecero i figli di Beniamino come era stato ad essi comandato, e ciascuno rapì una ragazza in moglie e se ne andò nel suo territorio per edificarvi città e abitare in esse. | 23 And the Benjaminites did so, and took their wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they carried off; then they went and returned to their inheritance, and rebuilt the towns, and dwelt in them. |
| 24 Anche i figli d'Israele secondo le loro tribù e famiglie fecero ritorno alle proprie tende. In quei giorni non eravi re in Israele, ma ciascuno faceva quel che meglio gli pareva giusto. | 24 And the people of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance. |
| 25 In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes. |
