1 - Gesù, continuando il discorso, parlò di nuovo in parabole e disse:	1 Jesus began to speak to them in parables once again,
2 «Il regno de' cieli è simile a un re che fece le nozze del suo figliuolo;	2 'The kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son's wedding.
3 e mandò i suoi servi a chiamar gl'invitati, i quali non vollero venire.	3 He sent his servants to cal those who had been invited, but they would not come.
4 Mandò altri servi a dire: - Ecco ho preparato il mio convito, i miei buoi e gli animali ingrassati sono ammazzati e tutto è all'ordine; venite alle nozze. -	4 Next he sent some more servants with the words, "Tel those who have been invited: Look, mybanquet is al prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to thewedding."
5 Ma quelli, non curandosene se ne andarono, chi alla sua villa e chi al suo traffico;	5 But they were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business,
6 altri anzi, presi i servi, li oltraggiarono e uccisero.	6 and the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and kil ed them.
7 Il re, udito ciò, si adirò e mandò le sue truppe a sterminare quegli omicidii e a bruciare la loro città.	7 The king was furious. He despatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town.
8 Allora disse a' suoi servi: - Le nozze son pronte, ma gl'invitati non ne furono degni.	8 Then he said to his servants, "The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to beunworthy,
9 Andate sui crocicchi delle strade e quanti trovate, chiamateli alle nozze. -	9 go to the main crossroads and invite everyone you can find to come to the wedding."
10 Quei servi, usciti per le strade, radunarono quanti trovarono, cattivi e buoni, e la sala delle nozze fu piena di convitati.	10 So these servants went out onto the roads and col ected together everyone they could find, bad andgood alike; and the wedding hal was fil ed with guests.
11 Il re entrò per vedere quelli che erano a tavola e, avendo notato un uomo che non era in abito da nozze,	11 When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a weddinggarment,
12 gli osservò: - Amico, come sei entrato qui senza l'abito da nozze? - Quegli restò senza parola.	12 and said to him, "How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?" And the man wassilent.
13 Allora il re disse ai servi: - Legategli le mani e i piedi e gettatelo fuori nel buio; ivi sarà il pianto e lo stridor di denti. -	13 Then the king said to the attendants, "Bind him hand and foot and throw him into the darknessoutside, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth."
14 Perchè molti sono i chiamati, ma pochi gli eletti».	14 For many are invited but not al are chosen.'
15 Allora i Farisei si ritirarono e tennero consiglio per coglierlo in parole.	15 Then the Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap him in what he said.
16 Gli mandarono i loro discepoli con degli Erodiani per dirgli: «Maestro, sappiamo che sei veritiero e insegni la via di Dio conforme alla verità e non guardi in faccia a nessuno, perchè non badi all'apparenza degli uomini;	16 And they sent their disciples to him, together with some Herodians, to say, 'Master, we know that youare an honest man and teach the way of God in all honesty, and that you are not afraid of anyone, becausehuman rank means nothing to you.
17 dicci dunque ciò che ti pare: è lecito o no pagare il tributo a Cesare?».	17 Give us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?'
18 Gesù, capita la loro malizia, disse: «Perchè mi tentate, o ipocriti?	18 But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, 'You hypocrites! Why are you putting me to thetest?
19 Mostratemi la moneta del tributo». Essi gli presentarono un denaro.	19 Show me the money you pay the tax with.' They handed him a denarius,
20 Ed egli chiese loro: «Di chi è quest'immagine e l'iscrizione?».	20 and he said, 'Whose portrait is this? Whose title?'
21 Gli risposero: «Di Cesare». Soggiunse allora Gesù: «Rendete dunque a Cesare quello che è di Cesare, e a Dio quello che è di Dio».	21 They replied, 'Caesar's.' Then he said to them, 'Very wel , pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar -- andGod what belongs to God.'
22 Ed essi, udita questa risposta, stupirono e, lasciatolo, se n'andarono via.	22 When they heard this they were amazed; they left him alone and went away.
23 In quello stesso giorno vennero a lui i Sadducei, i quali negano che vi sia la resurrezione e lo interrogarono dicendo:	23 That day some Sadducees -- who deny that there is a resurrection -- approached him and they putthis question to him,
24 «Maestro, Mosè disse: - Se uno muore senza figli, suo fratello sposi la moglie di lui e susciti prole a suo fratello. -	24 'Master, Moses said that if a man dies childless, his brother is to marry the widow, his sister-in-law, toraise children for his brother.
25 Ora c'erano tra noi sette fratelli; il primo prese moglie e morì e, non avendo prole, lasciò la moglie al fratello.	25 Now we had a case involving seven brothers; the first married and then died without children, leavinghis wife to his brother;
26 Lo stesso fece il secondo e poi il terzo, fino al settimo.	26 the same thing happened with the second and third and so on to the seventh,
27 Ultima fra tutti, morì anche la donna.	27 and then last of al the woman herself died.
28 Nella resurrezione adunque di quale dei sette sarà moglie, poichè tutti l'ebbero?».	28 Now at the resurrection, whose wife among the seven wil she be, since she had been married tothem al ?'
29 Gesù rispose loro: «Voi v'ingannate, perchè non capite nè le Scritture, nè la potenza di Dio.	29 Jesus answered them, 'You are wrong, because you understand neither the scriptures nor the powerof God.
30 Infatti alla resurrezione nè si ammoglieranno nè si mariteranno, ma saranno come angeli di Dio in cielo.	30 For at the resurrection men and women do not marry; no, they are like the angels in heaven.
31 Quanto poi alla resurrezione dei morti non avete letto quel che vi fu detto da Dio:	31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you never read what God himself said to you:
32 "Io sono il Dio d'Abramo, il Dio di Isacco e il Dio di Giacobbe"? Non è il Dio dei morti, ma dei vivi».	32 I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? He is God, not of the dead, but ofthe living.'
33 Il popolo, udendo ciò, si meravigliava per la sua dottrina.	33 And his teaching made a deep impression on the people who heard it.
34 I Farisei, udito che Gesù aveva ridotto al silenzio i Sadducei, si raccolsero insieme,	34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together
35 e un d'essi, dottore della legge, gli domandò per tentarlo:	35 and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further question,
36 «Maestro, qual è il più gran comandamento della legge?».	36 'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?'
37 Gesù gli rispose: «" Ama il Signore Dio tuo con tutto il tuo cuore, con tutta la tua anima e con tutta la tua mente ".	37 Jesus said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with al your heart, with al your soul, and with alyour mind.
38 Questo è il più grande e il primo comandamento.	38 This is the greatest and the first commandment.
39 Il secondo poi è simile a questo: " Amerai il tuo prossimo come te stesso ".	39 The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself.
40 Su questi due comandamenti si fondano tutta la legge e i Profeti».	40 On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too.'
41 Ed essendosi radunati i Farisei, Gesù li interrogò	41 While the Pharisees were gathered round, Jesus put to them this question,
42 dicendo: «Che vi pare del Cristo? E di chi è figlio?». «Di David», gli risposero.	42 'What is your opinion about the Christ? Whose son is he?' They told him, 'David's.'
43 Domandò loro: «Come dunque David in ispirito lo chiama Signore, dicendo:	43 He said to them, 'Then how is it that David, moved by the Spirit, cal s him Lord, where he says:
44 - Il Signore ha detto al mio Signore: " Siedi alla mia destra, finchè io abbia posto i tuoi nemici sotto i tuoi piedi " -?	44 The Lord declared to my Lord, take your seat at my right hand, til I have made your enemies yourfootstool?
45 Se dunque David lo chiama Signore, come può essere suo figlio?».	45 'If David cal s him Lord, how then can he be his son?'
46 E nessuno sapeva risponder nulla; nè da quel giorno nessuno più osò interrogarlo.	46 No one could think of anything to say in reply, and from that day no one dared to ask him any furtherquestions.
