| 1 - a chi teme il Signore non incoglierà male; ma nella tentazione Dio lo salverà e lo libererà da' mali. | 1 No evil will befall the man who fears the Lord, but in trial he will deliver him again and again. |
| 2 il savio non odia i comandamenti e la legge, e non sarà sbattuto [contro gli scogli] come una nave in burrasca. | 2 A wise man will not hate the law, but he who is hypocritical about it is like a boat in a storm. |
| 3 L'uomo assennato ha fiducia nella legge di Dio, e la legge è per lui fedele [come un oracolo]. | 3 A man of understanding will trust in the law; for him the law is as dependable as an inquiry by means of Urim. |
| 4 Prepara il discorso e sarai ascoltato; raccogli il tuo sapere e rispondi. | 4 Prepare what to say, and thus you will be heard; bind together your instruction, and make your answer. |
| 5 Come la ruota d'un carro son le interiora dello stolto, e come un asse che gira, i suoi pensieri. | 5 The heart of a fool is like a cart wheel, and his thoughts like a turning axle. |
| 6 Come un cavallo stallone è l'amico beffardo: sotto chiunque lo monta, nitrisce. | 6 A stallion is like a mocking friend; he neighs under every one who sits on him. |
| 7 Perchè un giorno sopravanza un altro, mentre la luce d'ogni giorno dell'anno [viene] dal sole? | 7 Why is any day better than another, when all the daylight in the year is from the sun? |
| 8 Dalla sapienza del Signore furono distinti, fatto che fu il sole, che obbedisce agli ordini; | 8 By the Lord's decision they were distinguished, and he appointed the different seasons and feasts; |
| 9 ed egli variò le stagioni e i loro giorni festivi, che in quelle son celebrati all'ora stabilita. | 9 some of them he exalted and hallowed, and some of them he made ordinary days. |
| 10 Alcuni di quei [giorni] Dio esaltò e santificò; altri di essi mise a far numero tra i giorni. E [cosi] tutti gli uomini [vengono] dalla polvere, e dalla terra, donde fu creato Adamo. | 10 All men are from the ground, and Adam was created of the dust. |
| 11 Nella pienezza della sapienza il Signore li distinse, e variò le loro vie: | 11 In the fulness of his knowledge the Lord distinguished them and appointed their different ways; |
| 12 alcuni di essi benedisse ed esaltò, e parte ne santificò e avvicinò a sè; e altri ne maledisse e umiliò, e li rovesciò dalla loro posizione. | 12 some of them he blessed and exalted, and some of them he made holy and brought near to himself; but some of them he cursed and brought low, and he turned them out of their place. |
| 13 Come la creta del vasaio è in mano sua perchè l'impasti e la formi, | 13 As clay in the hand of the potter-- for all his ways are as he pleases-- so men are in the hand of him who made them, to give them as he decides. |
| 14 e tutti i suoi destini dipendono dal beneplacito di lui; così l'uomo è in mano di colui che l'ha creato, il quale dà a lui secondo il suo giudizio. | 14 Good is the opposite of evil, and life the opposite of death; so the sinner is the opposite of the godly. |
| 15 Di fronte al male sta il bene e di fronte alla morte la vita: cosi di fronte al giusto il peccatore. E similmente osserva tutte le opere dell'Altissimo: [son sempre] a due a due, l'una opposta all'altra. | 15 Look upon all the works of the Most High; they likewise are in pairs, one the opposite of the other. |
| 16 Or io mi son levato Pulitino [tra i cultori della sapienza], e come uno che racimola dietro i vendemmiatori. | 16 I was the last on watch; I was like one who gleans after the grape-gatherers; by the blessing of the Lord I excelled, and like a grape-gatherer I filled my wine press. |
| 17 Nella benedizione del Signore ho sperato, e come uno che vendemmia ho riempito il tino. | 17 Consider that I have not labored for myself alone, but for all who seek instruction. |
| 18 Vedete come non per me solo ho lavorato, ma per tutti quelli che cercano d'istruirsi. | 18 Hear me, you who are great among the people, and you leaders of the congregation, hearken. |
| 19 Ascoltatemi, o grandi del popolo, e voi, che presiedete alla società, prestate orecchio. | 19 To son or wife, to brother or friend, do not give power over yourself, as long as you live; and do not give your property to another, lest you change your mind and must ask for it. |
| 20 Al figliuolo e alla moglie, al fratello e all'amico non dar braccio su te durante la tua vita. E non abbandonare ad altri le tue ricchezze, perchè tu non abbia a pentirtene e supplicare per riaverle. | 20 While you are still alive and have breath in you, do not let any one take your place. |
| 21 Fintantoché tu vivi e respiri, che nessuno pigli il tuo posto. | 21 For it is better that your children should ask from you than that you should look to the hand of you sons. |
| 22 Meglio è che i figliuoli preghino te, che tu debba guardare [in supplice attesa] alle mani de' tuoi figliuoli. | 22 Excel in all that you do; bring no stain upon your honor. |
| 23 In tutte le tue azioni resta tu il padrone: | 23 At the time when you end the days of your life, in the hour of death, distribute your inheritance. |
| 24 non imprimer macchia alla tua riputazione. Sul punto di finire i giorni di tua vita, e nell'ora della tua morte, [allora] distribuisci la tua eredità, | 24 Fodder and a stick and burdens for an ass; bread and discipline and work for a servant. |
| 25 pasto, bastone e soma all'asino: pane, castigo e lavoro allo schiavo. | 25 Set your slave to work, and you will find rest; leave his hands idle, and he will seek liberty. |
| 26 Questi lavora [solo] se castigato, e cerca il riposo; lasciagli le mani sciolte, e cercherà la libertà. | 26 Yoke and thong will bow the neck, and for a wicked servant there are racks and tortures. |
| 27 Il giogo e la briglia fan piegare il collo rigido, e le continue fatiche domano lo schiavo; | 27 Put him to work, that he may not be idle, for idleness teaches much evil. |
| 28 per lo schiavo cattivo la tortura e i ceppi! Immergilo nel lavoro, che non stia ozioso; | 28 Set him to work, as is fitting for him, and if he does not obey, make his fetters heavy. |
| 29 perché di molto male l'ozio é maestro. | 29 Do not act immoderately toward anybody, and do nothing without discretion. |
| 30 Mettilo al lavoro, come a lui si conviene: e se non t'obbedisce, domalo co' ceppi a' piedi. Ma non eccedere verso nessun uomo, e senza diritto non far nulla di grave, | 30 If you have a servant, let him be as yourself, because you have bought him with blood. |
| 31 Se hai uno schiavo fedele, sia per te come l'anima tua, trattalo come un fratello: perché col sangue dell'anima l'hai comprato. | 31 If you have a servant, treat him as a brother, for as your own soul you will need him. If you ill-treat him, and he leaves and runs away, which way will you go to seek him? |
| 32 Se ingiustamente lo maltratti, si darà alla fuga. | |
| 33 E se piglia e se ne va, non saprai a chi dimandarne, né per qual via andarne in cerca. | |
