Now Saul spoke to his son Jonathan, and to all his servants, so that they would kill David. But Jonathan, the son of Saul, loved David very much.1 Saul disse a Gionata suo figlio e a tutti i suoi servi di uccidere David; ma Gionata, figlio di Saul, amando grandemente David,
And Jonathan revealed it to David, saying: “Saul, my father, is seeking to kill you. Because of this, I ask you, take care for yourself in the morning. And you should conceal yourself and remain in hiding.2 l'avvisò, dicendogli: « Saul mio padre cerca di farti morire, sta' in guardia, mi raccomando, e domattina tienti in luogo segreto e nascosto.
Then I, going out, will be standing beside my father in the field, where you will be. And I will speak about you to my father. And whatever I see, I will report to you.”3 Io allora uscirò con mio padre, alla campagna nel luogo ove sarai, parlerò di te al mio padre, e tutto quello che vedrò, te lo farò sapere ».
Then Jonathan spoke good things about David to his father Saul. And he said to him: “You should not sin, O king, against your servant David. For he has not sinned against you, and his works toward you are very good.4 Gionata poi parlò a Saul in favore di David, e gli disse: « Non peccare, o re, contro il tuo servo David, perchè egli non ha peccato contro di te, e le sue opere sono state a te molto utili.
And he took his life in his own hand, and struck down the Philistine. And the Lord wrought a great salvation for all of Israel. You saw it, and you rejoiced. Why then would you sin against innocent blood by killing David, who is without guilt?”5 Egli pose a rischio la sua vita, uccise il Filisteo, e per lui il Signore operò una grande liberazione in Israele. »
And when Saul had heard this, being pleased by the voice of Jonathan, he swore, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be killed.”6 Saul diede ascolto, e, placato alle parole di Gionata. giurò: « Viva il Signore: egli non morrà! »
And so Jonathan called David, and he revealed to him all of these words. And Jonathan led in David to Saul, and he was before him, just as he had been yesterday and the day before.7 Gionata allora chiamò David, e raccontategli tutte queste cose, lo presentò a Saul presso il quale David Mette come per l'addietro.
Then the war was stirred up again. And David went out and fought against the Philistines. And he struck them down with a great slaughter. And they fled from his face.8 Essendo ricominciata la guerra, David, uscito a combattere contro i Filistei, inflisse loro una grande sconfitta e li mise in fuga.
And the evil spirit from the Lord came to Saul, who was sitting in his house and holding a lance. And David was playing music with his hand.9 Allora lo spirito malvagio, mandato dal Signore, fu sopra Saul.
And Saul attempted to fix David to the wall with the lance. But David turned aside from the face of Saul. And the lance failed to wound him, and it became fixed in the wall. And David fled, and so he was saved that night.10 tentò di conficcar David nella parete colla sua lancia; ma David sfuggì davanti a Saul, e la lancia, senza far male, diede nella parete. David fuggì e fu salvo per quella notte.
Therefore, Saul sent his guards to David’s house, so that they might watch for him, and so that he might be killed in the morning. And after Michal, his wife, had reported this to David, saying, “Unless you save yourself this night, tomorrow you will die,”11 Ma Saul mandò le sue guardie alla casa di David, per assicurarsi di lui e farlo morire al mattino.
she lowered him down through a window. Then he fled and went away, and he was saved.12 lo calò da una finestra; e David se ne andò, fuggì e si salvò.
Then Michal took a statue, and placed it on the bed. And she placed the pelt of a goat for the hair at its head. And she covered it with clothes.13 Intanto Micci, presa una statua, la pose sul letto, le mise intorno al capo una pelle, di capra col pelo, e la coprì di vesti;
And Saul sent attendants to seize David. And it was answered that he was sick.14 e quando Saul mandò le guardie a prendere David, essa rispose che era ammalato.
And again, Saul sent messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him to me on the bed, so that he may be killed.”15 Saul allora mandò di nuovo dei messi per veder David, dicendo: « Portatemelo nel suo letto, affinchè sia ucciso».
And when the messengers had arrived, they found a likeness on the bed, with a goat pelt at its head.16 Ma i messi andati che furono, trovaron nel letto la statua con la pelle di capra intorno al capo.
And Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me in this way, and released my enemy, so that he may flee?” And Michal responded to Saul, “Because he said to me, ‘Release me, otherwise I will kill you.’ ”17 Saul disse a Micol: «Perchè ti sei preso gioco di me in questo modo, e hai lasciato fuggire il mio nemico? » Micol rispose a Saul: « Perchè egli mi disse: Lasciami andare, o t'ammazzo ».
Now David was saved by fleeing, and he went to Samuel in Ramah. And he reported to him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went away and stayed at Naioth.18 Così David fuggi e, postosi in salvo, andò da Samuele in Ramata, e gli raccontò tutto ciò che Saul gli aveva fatto. Poi David e Samuele partirono e si fermarono a Naiot.
Then it was reported to Saul by some, saying, “Behold, David is at Naioth, in Ramah.”19 La cosa fu riferita a Saul da alcuni che gli andarono a dire: « Ecco David è a Naiot in Ramata ».
Therefore, Saul sent officers to seize David. And when they had seen a company of prophets prophesying, with Samuel presiding over them, the Spirit of the Lord also came to them, and they also began to prophesy.20 Allora Saul mandò delle guardie a prender David, ma queste, veduta un'adunanza di profeti che profetavano presieduti da Samuele, essendo lo Spirito del Signore andato anche sopra di loro, principiarono anch'esse a profetare.
And when this was reported to Saul, he sent other messengers. But they also prophesied. And again, Saul sent messengers a third time. And they also prophesied. Allora Saul, irritato dallo sdegno,
also went to Ramah himself. And he went as far as the great cistern, which is in Socoh. And he inquired and said, “In which place are Samuel and David?” And it was told to him, “Behold, they are at Naioth, in Ramah.”22 andò egli stesso a Ramata.
And he went to Naioth, in Ramah, and the Spirit of the Lord came to him also. And he continued on, walking and prophesying, until he arrived at Naioth, in Ramah.23 Allora Saul andò a Naiot in Ramata.
And he also took off his garments, and he prophesied with the others before Samuel. And he fell down naked, throughout that day and night. From this, too, is derived the proverb, “Could Saul also be among the prophets?”24 e, spogliatosi anch'egli delle sue vesti profetò con tutti gli altri dinanzi a Samuele, e stette nudo per terra tutto quel giorno e tutta la notte. »
