Now Saul spoke to his son Jonathan, and to all his servants, so that they would kill David. But Jonathan, the son of Saul, loved David very much.1 Saúl dijo a su hijo Jonatán y a todos sus servidores que haría morir a David; pero Jonatán, hijo de Saúl, amaba mucho a David,
And Jonathan revealed it to David, saying: “Saul, my father, is seeking to kill you. Because of this, I ask you, take care for yourself in the morning. And you should conceal yourself and remain in hiding.2 y avisó Jonatán a David diciéndole: «Mi padre Saúl te busca para matarte. Anda sobre aviso mañana por la mañana; retírate a un lugar oculto y escóndete.
Then I, going out, will be standing beside my father in the field, where you will be. And I will speak about you to my father. And whatever I see, I will report to you.”3 Yo saldré y estaré junto a mi padre en el campo, donde tú estés, y hablaré por ti a mi padre; veré lo que hay y te avisaré».
Then Jonathan spoke good things about David to his father Saul. And he said to him: “You should not sin, O king, against your servant David. For he has not sinned against you, and his works toward you are very good.4 Habló Jonatán a Saúl su padre en favor de David y dijo: «No peque el rey contra su siervo David, porque él no ha pecado contra ti, sino que te ha hecho grandes servicios.
And he took his life in his own hand, and struck down the Philistine. And the Lord wrought a great salvation for all of Israel. You saw it, and you rejoiced. Why then would you sin against innocent blood by killing David, who is without guilt?”5 Puso su vida en peligro, mató al filisteo y concedió Yahveh una gran victoria para todo Israel. Tú lo viste y te alegraste. ¿Por qué, pues, vas a pecar contra sangre inocente haciendo morir a David sin motivo?»
And when Saul had heard this, being pleased by the voice of Jonathan, he swore, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be killed.”6 Escuchó Saúl las palabras de Jonatán y juró: «¡Vive Yahveh!, no morirá».
And so Jonathan called David, and he revealed to him all of these words. And Jonathan led in David to Saul, and he was before him, just as he had been yesterday and the day before.7 Llamó entonces Jonatán a David, le contó todas estas palabras y llevó a David donde Saúl, y se quedó a su servicio como antes.
Then the war was stirred up again. And David went out and fought against the Philistines. And he struck them down with a great slaughter. And they fled from his face.8 Reanudada la guerra, partió David para combatir a los filisteos, les causó una gran derrota y huyeron ante él.
And the evil spirit from the Lord came to Saul, who was sitting in his house and holding a lance. And David was playing music with his hand.9 Se apoderó de Saúl un espíritu malo de Yahveh; estaba sentado en medio de la casa con su lanza en su mano y David tocaba.
And Saul attempted to fix David to the wall with the lance. But David turned aside from the face of Saul. And the lance failed to wound him, and it became fixed in the wall. And David fled, and so he was saved that night.10 Intentó Saúl clavar con su lanza a David en la pared; esquivó David a Saúl y la lanza se clavó en la pared; huyó David y se puso a salvo. Aquella misma noche
Therefore, Saul sent his guards to David’s house, so that they might watch for him, and so that he might be killed in the morning. And after Michal, his wife, had reported this to David, saying, “Unless you save yourself this night, tomorrow you will die,”11 envió Saúl gente a la casa de David para vigilarle y matarle por la mañana, pero su mujer Mikal advirtió a David: «Si no te pones a salvo esta misma noche, mañana morirás».
she lowered him down through a window. Then he fled and went away, and he was saved.12 Mikal hizo bajar a David por la ventana. El partió y huyó poniéndose a salvo.
Then Michal took a statue, and placed it on the bed. And she placed the pelt of a goat for the hair at its head. And she covered it with clothes.13 Tomó Mikal uno de los terafim y lo puso en el lecho, colocó una estera de pelos de cabra a la cabecera y la cubrió con un vestido.
And Saul sent attendants to seize David. And it was answered that he was sick.14 Cuando Saúl mandó gente para prender a David, ella dijo: «Está enfermo».
And again, Saul sent messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him to me on the bed, so that he may be killed.”15 Pero Saúl envió de nuevo los emisarios para ver a David y les dijo: «Traédmelo en su lecho, para matarlo».
And when the messengers had arrived, they found a likeness on the bed, with a goat pelt at its head.16 Entraron los enviados y hallaron un terafim en el lecho y la estera de pelos de cabra en la cabecera.
And Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me in this way, and released my enemy, so that he may flee?” And Michal responded to Saul, “Because he said to me, ‘Release me, otherwise I will kill you.’ ”17 Dijo Saúl a Mikal: «¿Por qué me has engañado y has dejado escapar a mi enemigo para que se salve?» Respondió Mikal a Saúl: «El me dijo: déjame escapar o te mato».
Now David was saved by fleeing, and he went to Samuel in Ramah. And he reported to him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went away and stayed at Naioth.18 Huyó, pues, David y se puso a salvo, yéndose a donde Samuel, en Ramá, y le contó cuanto Saúl le había hecho. Después, él y Samuel se fueron a habitar en las celdas.
Then it was reported to Saul by some, saying, “Behold, David is at Naioth, in Ramah.”19 Avisaron a Saúl: «Mira, David está en las celdas de Ramá».
Therefore, Saul sent officers to seize David. And when they had seen a company of prophets prophesying, with Samuel presiding over them, the Spirit of the Lord also came to them, and they also began to prophesy.20 Mandó Saúl emisarios para prender a David; vieron éstos la agrupación de los profetas en trance de profetizar, con Samuel a la cabeza. Vino sobre los emisarios de Saúl el espíritu de Dios y también ellos se pusieron en trance.
And when this was reported to Saul, he sent other messengers. But they also prophesied. And again, Saul sent messengers a third time. And they also prophesied. And Saul, being exceedingly angry,21 Se lo comunicaron a Saúl y envió nuevos emisarios que también se pusieron en trance. Saúl volvió a enviar mensajeros por tercera vez y también éstos se pusieron en trance.
also went to Ramah himself. And he went as far as the great cistern, which is in Socoh. And he inquired and said, “In which place are Samuel and David?” And it was told to him, “Behold, they are at Naioth, in Ramah.”22 Entonces partió él mismo para Ramá y llegó a la gran cisterna de la era que está en Seku y preguntó: «¿Dónde están Samuel y David?», y le dijeron: «Están en las celdas de Ramá».
And he went to Naioth, in Ramah, and the Spirit of the Lord came to him also. And he continued on, walking and prophesying, until he arrived at Naioth, in Ramah.23 Se fue de allí a las celdas de Ramá y vino también sobre él el espíritu de Dios e iba caminando en trance hasta que llegó a las celdas de Ramá.
And he also took off his garments, and he prophesied with the others before Samuel. And he fell down naked, throughout that day and night. From this, too, is derived the proverb, “Could Saul also be among the prophets?”24 También él se quitó sus vestidos y se puso en trance profético ante Samuel, y quedó desnudo en tierra todo aquel día y toda aquella noche, por lo que se suele decir: «¿Conque también Saúl entre los profetas?»
