Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy, a brother, to Philemon, our beloved fellow laborer,1 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy, a brother: to Philemon, our beloved and fellow labourer;
and to Apphia, most beloved sister, and to Archippus, our fellow soldier, and to the church which is in your house.2 And to Appia, our dearest sister, and to Archippus, our fellow soldier, and to the church which is in thy house:
Grace and peace to you, from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
I give thanks to my God, always keeping remembrance of you in my prayers,4 I give thanks to my God, always making a remembrance of thee in my prayers.
(for I am hearing of your charity and faith, which you have in the Lord Jesus and with all the saints)5 Hearing of thy charity and faith, which thou hast in the Lord Jesus, and towards all the saints:
so that the participation of your faith may become evident by the recognition of every good work which is in you in Christ Jesus.6 That the communication of thy faith may be made evident in the acknowledgment of every good work, that is in you in Christ Jesus.
For I have found great joy and consolation in your charity, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed by you, brother.7 For I have had great joy and consolation in thy charity, because the bowels of the saints have been refreshed by thee, brother.
Because of this, I have enough confidence in Christ Jesus to command you concerning certain things,8 Wherefore though I have much confidence in Christ Jesus, to command thee that which is to the purpose:
but I beg you instead, for the sake of charity, since you are so much like Paul: an old man and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.9 For charity sake I rather beseech, whereas thou art such a one, as Paul an old man, and now a prisoner also of Jesus Christ.
I beg you, on behalf of my son, whom I have begotten in my chains, Onesimus.10 I beseech thee for my son, whom I have begotten in my bands, Onesimus,
In times past, he was useless to you, but now he is useful both to me and to you.11 Who hath been heretofore unprofitable to thee, but now is profitable both to me and thee,
So I have sent him back to you. And may you receive him like my own heart.12 Whom I have sent back to thee. And do thou receive him as my own bowels.
I myself wanted to retain him with me, so that he might minister to me, on your behalf, while I am in the chains of the Gospel.13 Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered to me in the bands of the gospel:
But I was willing to do nothing without your counsel, so as not to make use of your good deed as if out of necessity, but only willingly.14 But without thy counsel I would do nothing: that thy good deed might not be as it were of necessity, but voluntary.
So perhaps, then, he departed from you for a time, so that you might receive him again for eternity,15 For perhaps he therefore departed for a season from thee, that thou mightest receive him again for ever:
no longer as a servant, but, in place of a servant, a most beloved brother, especially to me: but how much so more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord!16 Not now as a servant, but instead of a servant, a most dear brother, especially to me: but how much more to thee both in the flesh and in the Lord?
Therefore, if you hold me to be a companion, receive him as you would me.17 If therefore thou count me a partner, receive him as myself.
But if he has harmed you in any way, or if he is in your debt, charge it to me.18 And if he hath wronged thee in any thing, or is in thy debt, put that to my account.
I, Paul, have written this with my own hand: I will repay. And I need not tell you, that you are also in debt yourself, to me.19 I Paul have written it with my own hand: I will repay it: not to say to thee, that thou owest me thy own self also.
So it is, brother. May I delight with you in the Lord! Refresh my heart in Christ.20 Yea, brother. May I enjoy thee in the Lord. Refresh my bowels in the Lord.
I have written to you, trusting in your obedience, knowing, too, that you will do even more than what I say.21 Trusting in thy obedience, I have written to thee: knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.
But also, at once, prepare a lodging for me. For I am hoping, through your prayers, to present myself to you.22 But withal prepare me also a lodging. For I hope that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.
Greet Epaphras, my fellow captive in Christ Jesus,23 There salute thee Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus;
and Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my helpers.24 Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke my fellow labourers.
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.25 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
