1 Then Paul, gazing intently at the council, said, “Noble brothers, I have spoken with all good conscience before God, even to this present day.”	1 Fixant du regard le Sanhédrin, Paul dit: "Frères, c'est tout à fait en bonne conscience que je me suisconduit devant Dieu jusqu'à ce jour."
2 And the high priest, Ananias, instructed those who were standing nearby to strike him on the mouth.	2 Mais le grand prêtre Ananie ordonna à ses assistants de le frapper sur la bouche.
3 Then Paul said to him: “God shall strike you, you whitewashed wall! For would you sit and judge me according to the law, when, contrary to the law, you order me to be struck?”	3 Alors Paul lui dit: "C'est Dieu qui te frappera, toi, muraille blanchie! Eh quoi! Tu sièges pour mejuger d'après la Loi, et, au mépris de la Loi, tu ordonnes de me frapper!"
4 And those who were standing nearby said, “Are you speaking evil about the high priest of God?”	4 Les assistants lui dirent: "C'est le grand prêtre de Dieu que tu insultes?"
5 And Paul said: “I did not know, brothers, that he is the high priest. For it is written: ‘You shall not speak evil of the leader of your people.’ ”	5 Paul répondit: "Je ne savais pas, frères, que ce fût le grand prêtre. Car il est écrit: Tu ne maudiras pasle chef de ton peuple."
6 Now Paul, knowing that one group were Sadducees and the other were Pharisees, exclaimed in the council: “Noble brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees! It is over the hope and resurrection of the dead that I am being judged.”	6 Paul savait qu'il y avait là d'un côté le parti des Sadducéens, de l'autre celui des Pharisiens. Il s'écriadonc dans le Sanhédrin: "Frères, je suis, moi, Pharisien, fils de Pharisiens. C'est pour notre espérance, larésurrection des morts, que je suis mis en jugement."
7 And when he had said this, a dissension occurred between the Pharisees and the Sadducees. And the multitude was divided.	7 A peine eut-il dit cela qu'un conflit se produisit entre Pharisiens et Sadducéens, et l'assemblée sedivisa.
8 For the Sadducees claim that there is no resurrection, and neither angels, nor spirits. But the Pharisees confess both of these.	8 Les Sadducéens disent en effet qu'il n'y a ni résurrection, ni ange, ni esprit, tandis que les Pharisiensprofessent l'un et l'autre.
9 Then there occurred a great clamor. And some of the Pharisees, rising up, were fighting, saying: “We find nothing evil in this man. What if a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel?”	9 Il se fit donc une grande clameur. Quelques scribes du parti des Pharisiens se levèrent et protestèrenténergiquement: "Nous ne trouvons rien de mal en cet homme. Et si un esprit lui avait parlé? Ou un ange?"
10 And since a great dissension had been made, the tribune, fearing that Paul might be torn apart by them, ordered the soldiers to descend and to seize him from their midst, and to bring him into the fortress.	10 La dispute devenait de plus en plus vive. Le tribun, craignant qu'ils ne missent Paul en pièces, fitdescendre la troupe pour l'enlever du milieu d'eux et le ramener à la forteresse.
11 Then, on the following night, the Lord stood near him and said: “Be constant. For just as you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so also it is necessary for you to testify at Rome.”	11 La nuit suivante, le Seigneur vint le trouver et lui dit: "Courage! De même que tu as rendutémoignage de moi à Jérusalem, ainsi faut-il encore que tu témoignes à Rome."
12 And when daylight arrived, some of the Jews gathered together and bound themselves with an oath, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.	12 Lorsqu'il fit jour, les Juifs tinrent un conciliabule, où ils s'engagèrent par anathème à ne pas mangerni boire avant d'avoir tué Paul.
13 Now there were more than forty men who had taken this oath together.	13 Ils étaient plus de 40 à avoir fait cette conjuration.
14 And they approached the leaders of the priests, and the elders, and they said: “We have sworn ourselves by an oath, so that we will taste nothing, until we have killed Paul.	14 Ils allèrent trouver les grands prêtres et les anciens, et leur dirent: "Nous nous sommes engagés paranathème à ne rien prendre avant d'avoir tué Paul.
15 Therefore, with the council, you should now give notice to the tribune, so that he may bring him to you, as if you intended to determine something else about him. But before he approaches, we have made preparations to put him to death.”	15 Vous donc maintenant, d'accord avec le Sanhédrin, expliquez au tribun qu'il doit vous l'amener,sous prétexte d'examiner plus à fond son affaire. De notre côté, nous sommes prêts à le tuer avant qu'il n'arrive."
16 But when Paul’s sister’s son had heard of this, about their treachery, he went and entered into the fortress, and he reported it to Paul.	16 Mais le fils de la soeur de Paul eut connaissance du guet-apens. Il se rendit à la forteresse, entra etprévint Paul.
17 And Paul, calling to him one of the centurions, said: “Lead this young man to the tribune. For he has something to tell him.”	17 Appelant un des centurions, Paul lui dit: "Conduis ce jeune homme au tribun; il a quelque chose àlui communiquer."
18 And indeed, he took him and led him to the tribune, and he said, “Paul, the prisoner, asked me to lead this young man to you, since he has something to say to you.”	18 Le centurion le prit donc et l'amena au tribun. "Le prisonnier Paul, dit-il, m'a appelé et m'a prié det'amener ce jeune homme, qui a quelque chose à te dire."
19 Then the tribune, taking him by the hand, withdrew with him by themselves, and he asked him: “What is it that you have to tell me?”	19 Le tribun prit le jeune homme par la main, se retira à l'écart et lui demanda: "Qu'as-tu à mecommuniquer?" -
20 Then he said: “The Jews have met to ask you to bring Paul tomorrow to the council, as if they intended to question him about something else.	20 "Les Juifs, répondit-il, se sont concertés pour te prier d'amener Paul demain au Sanhédrin, sousprétexte d'enquêter plus à fond sur son cas.
21 But truly, you should not believe them, for they would ambush him with more than forty men from among them, who have bound themselves by an oath neither to eat, nor to drink, until they have put him to death. And they are now prepared, hoping for an affirmation from you.”	21 Ne va pas les croire. Plus de 40 d'entre eux le guettent, qui se sont engagés par anathème à ne pasmanger ni boire avant de l'avoir tué. Et maintenant, ils sont tout prêts, escomptant ton accord."
22 And then the tribune dismissed the young man, instructing him not to tell anyone that he had made known these things to him.	22 Le tribun congédia le jeune homme avec cette recommandation: "Ne raconte à personne que tu m'asrévélé ces choses."
23 Then, having called two centurions, he said to them: “Prepare two hundred soldiers, so that they may go as far as Caesarea, and seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen, for the third hour of the night.	23 Puis il appela deux des centurions et leur dit: "Tenez prêts à partir pour Césarée, dès la troisièmeheure de la nuit, 200 soldats, 70 cavaliers et 200 hommes d'armes.
24 And prepare beasts of burden to carry Paul, so that they may lead him safely to Felix, the governor.”	24 Qu'on ait aussi des chevaux pour faire monter Paul et le conduire sain et sauf au gouverneur Félix."
25 For he was afraid, lest perhaps the Jews might seize him and kill him, and that afterwards he would be falsely accused, as if he had accepted a bribe. And so he wrote a letter containing the following:	25 Et il écrivit une lettre ainsi conçue:
26 “Claudius Lysias, to the most excellent governor, Felix: greetings.	26 "Claudius Lysias au très excellent gouverneur Félix, salut!
27 This man, having been apprehended by the Jews and being about to be put to death by them, I rescued, overwhelming them with soldiers, since I realized that he is a Roman.	27 L'homme que voici avait été pris par les Juifs, et ils allaient le tuer, quand j'arrivai avec la troupe etle leur arrachai, ayant appris qu'il était citoyen romain.
28 And wanting to know the reason that they objected to him, I brought him into their council.	28 J'ai voulu savoir au juste pourquoi ils l'accusaient et je l'ai amené dans leur Sanhédrin.
29 And I discovered him to be accused about questions of their law. Yet truly, nothing deserving of death or imprisonment was within the accusation.	29 J'ai constaté que l'accusation se rapportait à des points contestés de leur Loi, mais qu'il n'y avaitaucune charge qui entraînât la mort ou les chaînes.
30 And when I had been given news of ambushes, which they had prepared against him, I sent him to you, notifying his accusers also, so that they may plead their accusations before you. Farewell.”	30 Avisé qu'un complot se préparait contre cet homme, je te l'ai aussitôt envoyé, et j'ai informé sesaccusateurs qu'ils avaient à porter devant toi leur plainte contre lui."
31 Therefore the soldiers, taking Paul according to their orders, brought him by night to Antipatris.	31 Conformément aux ordres reçus, les soldats prirent Paul et le conduisirent de nuit à Antipatris.
32 And the next day, sending the horsemen to go with him, they returned to the fortress.	32 Le lendemain, ils laissèrent les cavaliers s'en aller avec lui et rentrèrent à la forteresse.
33 And when they had arrived at Caesarea and had delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul before him.	33 Arrivés à Césarée, les cavaliers remirent la lettre au gouverneur et lui présentèrent Paul.
34 And when he had read it and had asked which province he was from, realizing that he was from Cilicia, he said:	34 Après avoir lu la lettre, le gouverneur s'informa de quelle province il était. Apprenant qu'il était deCilicie:
35 “I will hear you, when your accusers have arrived.” And he ordered him to be kept in the praetorium of Herod.	35 "Je t'entendrai, dit-il, quand tes accusateurs seront arrivés, eux aussi." Et il le fit garder dans leprétoire d'Hérode.
