CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINSAGRADA BIBLIA
Then he arrived at Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple named Timothy was there, the son of a faithful Jewish woman, his father a Gentile.1 Chegou a Derbe e depois a Listra. Havia ali um discípulo, chamado Timóteo, filho de uma judia cristã, mas de pai grego,
The brothers who were at Lystra and Iconium rendered good testimony to him.2 que gozava de ótima reputação junto dos irmãos de Listra e de Icônio.
Paul wanted this man to travel with him, and taking him, he circumcised him, because of the Jews who were in those places. For they all knew that his father was a Gentile.3 Paulo quis que ele fosse em sua companhia. Ao tomá-lo consigo, circuncidou-o, por causa dos judeus daqueles lugares, pois todos sabiam que o seu pai era grego.
And as they were traveling through the cities, they delivered to them the dogmas to be kept, which were decreed by the Apostles and elders who were at Jerusalem.4 Nas cidades pelas quais passavam, ensinavam que observassem as decisões que haviam sido tomadas pelos apóstolos e anciãos em Jerusalém.
And certainly, the Churches were being strengthened in faith and were increasing in number every day.5 Assim as igrejas eram confirmadas na fé, e cresciam em número dia a dia.
Then, while crossing through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the Word in Asia.6 Atravessando em seguida a Frígia e a província da Galácia, foram impedidos pelo Espírito Santo de anunciar a palavra de Deus na {província da} Ásia.
But when they had arrived in Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not permit them.7 Ao chegarem aos confins da Mísia, tencionavam seguir para a Bitínia, mas o Espírito de Jesus não o permitiu.
Then, when they had crossed through Mysia, they descended to Troas.8 Depois de haverem atravessado rapidamente a Mísia, desceram a Trôade.
And a vision in the night was revealed to Paul of a certain man of Macedonia, standing and pleading with him, and saying: “Cross into Macedonia and help us!”9 De noite, Paulo teve uma visão: um macedônio, em pé, diante dele, lhe rogava: Passa à Macedônia, e vem em nosso auxílio!
Then, after he saw the vision, immediately we sought to set out for Macedonia, having been assured that God had called us to evangelize to them.10 Assim que teve essa visão, procuramos partir para a Macedônia, certos de que Deus nos chamava a pregar-lhes o Evangelho.
And sailing from Troas, taking a direct path, we arrived at Samothrace, and on the following day, at Neapolis,11 Embarcados em Trôade, fomos diretamente à Samotrácia e no outro dia a Neápolis;
and from there to Philippi, which is the preeminent city in the area of Macedonia, a colony. Now we were in this city some days, conferring together.12 e dali a Filipos, que é a cidade principal daquele distrito da Macedônia, uma colônia {romana}. Nesta cidade nos detivemos por alguns dias.
Then, on the Sabbath day, we were walking outside the gate, beside a river, where there seemed to be a prayer gathering. And sitting down, we were speaking with the women who had assembled.13 No sábado, saímos fora da porta para junto do rio, onde pensávamos haver lugar de oração. Aí nos assentamos e falávamos às mulheres que se haviam reunido.
And a certain woman, named Lydia, a seller of purple in the city of Thyatira, a worshiper of God, listened. And the Lord opened her heart to be receptive to what Paul was saying.14 Uma mulher, chamada Lídia, da cidade dos tiatirenos, vendedora de púrpura, temente a Deus, nos escutava. O Senhor abriu-lhe o coração, para atender às coisas que Paulo dizia.
And when she had been baptized, with her household, she pleaded with us, saying: “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, enter into my house and lodge there.” And she convinced us.15 Foi batizada juntamente com a sua família e fez-nos este pedido: Se julgais que tenho fé no Senhor, entrai em minha casa e ficai comigo. E obrigou-nos a isso.
Then it happened that, as we were going out to prayer, a certain girl, having a spirit of divination, met with us. She was a source of great profit to her masters, through her divining.16 Certo dia, quando íamos à oração, eis que nos veio ao encontro uma moça escrava que tinha o espírito de Pitão, a qual com as suas adivinhações dava muito lucro a seus senhores.
This girl, following Paul and us, was crying out, saying: “These men are servants of the Most High God! They are announcing to you the way of salvation!”17 Pondo-se a seguir a Paulo e a nós, gritava: Estes homens são servos do Deus Altíssimo, que vos anunciam o caminho da salvação.
Now she behaved in this way for many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you, in the name of Jesus Christ, to go out from her.” And it went away in that same hour.18 Repetiu isto por muitos dias. Por fim, Paulo enfadou-se. Voltou-se para ela e disse ao espírito: Ordeno-te em nome de Jesus Cristo que saias dela. E na mesma hora ele saiu.
But her masters, seeing that the hope of their profit went away, apprehended Paul and Silas, and they brought them to the rulers at the courthouse.19 Vendo seus amos que se lhes esvaecera a esperança do lucro, pegaram Paulo e Silas e levaram-nos ao foro, à presença das autoridades.
And presenting them to the magistrates, they said: “These men are disturbing our city, since they are Jews.20 Em seguida, apresentaram-nos aos magistrados, acusando: Estes homens são judeus; amotinam a nossa cidade.
And they are announcing a way which is not lawful for us to accept or to observe, since we are Romans.”21 E pregam um modo de vida que nós, romanos, não podemos admitir nem seguir.
And the people rushed together against them. And the magistrates, tearing their tunics, ordered them to be beaten with staffs.22 O povo insurgiu-se contra eles. Os magistrados mandaram arrancar-lhes as vestes para açoitá-los com varas.
And when they had inflicted many scourges on them, they cast them into prison, instructing the guard to watch them diligently.23 Depois de lhes terem feito muitas chagas, meteram-nos na prisão, mandando ao carcereiro que os guardasse com segurança.
And since he had received this kind of order, he cast them into the interior prison cell, and he restricted their feet with stocks.24 Este, conforme a ordem recebida, meteu-os na prisão inferior e prendeu-lhes os pés ao cepo.
Then, in the middle of the night, Paul and Silas were praying and praising God. And those who were also in custody were listening to them.25 Pela meia-noite, Paulo e Silas rezavam e cantavam um hino a Deus, e os prisioneiros os escutavam.
Yet truly, there was a sudden earthquake, so great that the foundations of the prison were moved. And immediately all the doors were opened, and the bindings of everyone were released.26 Subitamente, sentiu-se um terremoto tão grande que se abalaram até os fundamentos do cárcere. Abriram-se logo todas as portas e soltaram-se as algemas de todos.
Then the prison guard, having been jarred awake, and seeing the doors of the prison open, drew his sword and intended to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had fled.27 Acordou o carcereiro e, vendo abertas as portas do cárcere, supôs que os presos haviam fugido. Tirou da espada e queria matar-se.
But Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying: “Do no harm to yourself, for we are all here!”28 Mas Paulo bradou em alta voz: Não te faças nenhum mal, pois estamos todos aqui.
Then calling for a light, he entered. And trembling, he fell before the feet of Paul and Silas.29 Então o carcereiro pediu luz, entrou e lançou-se trêmulo aos pés de Paulo e Silas.
And bringing them outside, he said, “Sirs, what must I do, so that I may be saved?”30 Depois os conduziu para fora e perguntou-lhes: Senhores, que devo fazer para me salvar?
So they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and then you will be saved, with your household.”31 Disseram-lhe: Crê no Senhor Jesus e serás salvo, tu e tua família.
And they spoke the Word of the Lord to him, along with all those who were in his house.32 Anunciaram-lhe a palavra de Deus, a ele e a todos os que estavam em sua casa.
And he, taking them in the same hour of the night, washed their scourges. And he was baptized, and next his entire household.33 Então, naquela mesma hora da noite, ele cuidou deles e lavou-lhes as chagas. Imediatamente foi batizado, ele e toda a sua família.
And when he had brought them into his own house, he set a table for them. And he was joyous, with his entire household, believing in God.34 Em seguida, ele os fez subir para sua casa, pôs-lhes a mesa e alegrou-se com toda a sua casa por haver crido em Deus.
And when daylight had arrived, the magistrates sent the attendants, saying, “Release those men.”35 Quando amanheceu, os magistrados mandaram os lictores dizer: Solta esses homens.
But the prison guard reported these words to Paul: “The magistrates have sent to have you released. Now therefore, depart. Go in peace.”36 O carcereiro transmitiu essa mensagem a Paulo: Os magistrados mandaram-me dizer que vos ponha em liberdade. Saí, pois, e ide em paz.
But Paul said to them: “They have beaten us publicly, though we were not condemned. They have cast men who are Romans into prison. And now they would drive us away secretly? Not so. Instead, let them come forward,37 Mas Paulo replicou: Sem nenhum julgamento nos açoitaram publicamente, a nós que somos cidadãos romanos, e meteram-nos no cárcere, e agora nos lançam fora ocultamente... Não há de ser assim! Mas venham e soltem-nos pessoalmente!
and let us drive them away.” Then the attendants reported these words to the magistrates. And upon hearing that they were Romans, they were afraid.38 Os lictores deram parte dessas palavras aos magistrados. Estes temeram, ao ouvir dizer que eram romanos.
And arriving, they pleaded with them, and leading them out, they begged them to depart from the city.39 Foram e lhes falaram brandamente. Pedindo desculpas, rogavam-lhes que se retirassem da cidade.
And they went away from the prison and entered into the house of Lydia. And having seen the brothers, they consoled them, and then they set out.40 Saindo do cárcere, entraram em casa de Lídia, onde reviram e consolaram os irmãos. Depois partiram.
