Then, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being procurator of Judea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,1 Anno quinto decimo dell' imperio di Tiberio Cesare (imperatore), procurando Ponzio Pilato (da avere) la Iudea, Erode era signore di Galilea, e il suo fratello Filippo era signore del paese di Iturea e di Traconite e di Lisania e d' Abilina.
under the high priests Annas and Caiaphas: the word of the Lord came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.2 E questo era nel tempo che Anna e Caifas erano principi de' sacerdoti; e in questo tempo venne la gloria del Signore sopra Ioanne, figliuolo di Zaccaria, stando egli nel deserto.
And he went into the entire region of the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins,3 E allora venne Ioanne in quel luogo e contrada del Giordano, e predicava il battesimo della penitenza in remissione de' peccati,
just as it has been written in the book of the sermons of the prophet Isaiah: “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight his paths.4 sì come è scritto nel libro de' sermoni di Isaia profeta (che dice): io sono la voce chiamante in deserto; apparecchiate le vie del Signore; e fate dritte le strade sue (e li suoi comandamenti).
Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low. And what is crooked shall be made straight. And the rough paths shall be made into level ways.5 Imperò che ogni valle empirassi, e ogni monte e colle s' agguagliarà; e saranno le cose torte in dirittura, e le aspere nella via piana.
And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”6 E vederà ogni carne il salvatore Iddio.
Therefore, he said to the crowd that went out in order to be baptized by him: “You progeny of vipers! Who told you to flee from the approaching wrath?7 Diceva adunque egli alle turbe, le quali uscivano per battezzarsi da lui: generazione di serpenti, chi vi ha mostrato di fuggire dalla ventura ira?
So then, produce fruits worthy of repentance. And do not begin to say, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God has the power to raise up sons to Abraham from these stones.8 Fate adunque li frutti degni di penitenza, e non cominciate a dicere: abbiamo Abraam per padre. Certo vi dico che Iddio è potente a suscitare li figliuoli di Abraam di queste pietre.
For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.”9 Imperò che già la mannara è posta alla radice dell' arbore. Ogni adunque arbore, non facente buono frutto, sarà tagliato e posto al fuoco.
And the crowed was questioning him, saying, “What then should we do?”10 E. le turbe addimandavanlo dicendo: che adunque faremo?
But in response, he said to them: “Whoever has two coats, let him give to those who do not have. And whoever has food, let him act similarly.”11 E rispondendo diceva a quelli: chi ha due vestimente, doni al non avente; e chi ha cibi, faccia similmente.
Now the tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?”12 Onde vennero etiam li pubblicani per battezzarsi, e dissero a quello: maestro, che faremo noi?
But he said to them, “You should do nothing more than what has been appointed to you.”13 Ed egli disse a quelli: nulla altra cosa fate, che quel che a voi è ordinato.
Then the soldiers also questioned him, saying, “And what should we do?” And he said to them: “You should strike no one, and you should not make false accusations. And be content with your pay.”14 E addimandavanlo li cavalieri, dicendo: che faremo etiam noi? E a loro disse: non tormentate alcuno, e ingiustamente non calunniate, e state contenti de' vostri salarii.
Now all were thinking about John in their hearts, and the people were supposing that perhaps he might be the Christ.15 Onde estimando il popolo, e pensando tutti nelli suoi cuori di Ioanne, ch' egli forse non fosse Cristo,
John responded by saying to everyone: “Indeed, I baptize you with water. But there will arrive one stronger than me, the laces of whose shoes I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit, and with fire.16 rispose Ioanne, e diceva a tutti: io certamente vi battezzo nell' acqua; ma verrà il più forte, la correggia de' cui calzamenti non sono degno da sciogliere; egli vi battezzarà nel Spirito santo e nel fuoco.
His winnowing fan is in his hand. And he will purify his threshing floor. And he will gather the wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”17 Nella cui mano è la pala, e purgarà l'aia sua, e raunarà il frumento nel granaro suo, e bruciarà le paglie nel fuoco inestinguibile.
Indeed, he also proclaimed many other things, exhorting the people.18 E molte altre cose esortando, egli evangelizzava al popolo.
But Herod the tetrarch, when he was corrected by him concerning Herodias, his brother’s wife, and concerning all the evils that Herod had done,19 Di che Erode Tetrarca, essendo ripreso da quello di Erodiade, mogliere del suo fratello, e di tutti li mali che fece Erode,
added this also, above all else: that he confined John to prison.20 sopra tutti questi aggiunse etiam questo, ch' egli chiuse Ioanne in pregione.
Now it happened that, when all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized; and as he was praying, heaven was opened.21 Etiam fatto è, che battezzato tutto il popolo e Iesù, ed egli orando, fu aperto il cielo.
And the Holy Spirit, in a corporal appearance like a dove, descended upon him. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son. In you, I am well pleased.”22 E discese il Spirito santo in specie corporale, come colomba, sopra di lui; e fatta fu la voce dal cielo tu sei il figliuolo mio diletto, in te mi sono compiaciuto.
And Jesus himself was beginning to be about thirty years old, being (as it was supposed) the son of Joseph, who was of Heli, who was of Matthat,23 Ed egli Iesù era incominciante quasi di trenta anni, come si imaginava ch' egli fosse figliuolo di Iosef, il quale fu di Eli, il quale fu di Matat,
