1 Then, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being procurator of Judea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,1 In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herodtetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the territories of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch ofAbilene,
2 under the high priests Annas and Caiaphas: the word of the Lord came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.2 and while the high-priesthood was held by Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the sonof Zechariah, in the desert.
3 And he went into the entire region of the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins,3 He went through the whole Jordan area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,
4 just as it has been written in the book of the sermons of the prophet Isaiah: “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight his paths.4 as it is written in the book of the sayings of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one that cries in the desert:Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight!
5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low. And what is crooked shall be made straight. And the rough paths shall be made into level ways.5 Let every val ey be fil ed in, every mountain and hil be level ed, winding ways be straightened andrough roads made smooth,
6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”6 and al humanity wil see the salvation of God.
7 Therefore, he said to the crowd that went out in order to be baptized by him: “You progeny of vipers! Who told you to flee from the approaching wrath?7 He said, therefore, to the crowds who came to be baptised by him, 'Brood of vipers, who warned you toflee from the coming retribution?
8 So then, produce fruits worthy of repentance. And do not begin to say, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God has the power to raise up sons to Abraham from these stones.8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance, and do not start telling yourselves, "We have Abraham as ourfather," because, I tel you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones.
9 For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.”9 Yes, even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees, so that any tree failing to produce good fruitwil be cut down and thrown on the fire.'
10 And the crowed was questioning him, saying, “What then should we do?”10 When al the people asked him, 'What must we do, then?'
11 But in response, he said to them: “Whoever has two coats, let him give to those who do not have. And whoever has food, let him act similarly.”11 he answered, 'Anyone who has two tunics must share with the one who has none, and anyone withsomething to eat must do the same.'
12 Now the tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?”12 There were tax collectors, too, who came for baptism, and these said to him, 'Master, what must wedo?'
13 But he said to them, “You should do nothing more than what has been appointed to you.”13 He said to them, 'Exact no more than the appointed rate.'
14 Then the soldiers also questioned him, saying, “And what should we do?” And he said to them: “You should strike no one, and you should not make false accusations. And be content with your pay.”14 Some soldiers asked him in their turn, 'What about us? What must we do?' He said to them, 'Nointimidation! No extortion! Be content with your pay!'
15 Now all were thinking about John in their hearts, and the people were supposing that perhaps he might be the Christ.15 A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to wonder whether Johnmight be the Christ,
16 John responded by saying to everyone: “Indeed, I baptize you with water. But there will arrive one stronger than me, the laces of whose shoes I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit, and with fire.16 so John declared before them al , 'I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, who is morepowerful than me, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit andfire.
17 His winnowing fan is in his hand. And he will purify his threshing floor. And he will gather the wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”17 His winnowing-fan is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn; butthe chaff he wil burn in a fire that will never go out.'
18 Indeed, he also proclaimed many other things, exhorting the people.18 And he proclaimed the good news to the people with many other exhortations too.
19 But Herod the tetrarch, when he was corrected by him concerning Herodias, his brother’s wife, and concerning all the evils that Herod had done,19 But Herod the tetrarch, censured by John for his relations with his brother's wife Herodias and for allthe other crimes he had committed,
20 added this also, above all else: that he confined John to prison.20 added a further crime to al the rest by shutting John up in prison.
21 Now it happened that, when all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized; and as he was praying, heaven was opened.21 Now it happened that when al the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptismwas at prayer, heaven opened
22 And the Holy Spirit, in a corporal appearance like a dove, descended upon him. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son. In you, I am well pleased.”22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical form, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven,'You are my Son; today have I fathered you.'
23 And Jesus himself was beginning to be about thirty years old, being (as it was supposed) the son of Joseph, who was of Heli, who was of Matthat,23 When he began, Jesus was about thirty years old, being the son, as it was thought, of Joseph son ofHeli,
24 who was of Levi, who was of Melchi, who was of Jannai, who was of Joseph,24 son of Matthat, son of Levi, son of Melchi, son of Jannai, son of Joseph,
25 who was of Mattathias, who was of Amos, who was of Nahum, who was of Esli, who was of Naggai,25 son of Mattathias, son of Amos, son of Nahum, son of Esli, son of Naggai,
