CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And as they were approaching Jerusalem and Bethania, toward the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,1 When they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples
and he said to them: “Go into the village that is opposite you, and immediately upon entering there, you will find a colt tied, on which no man has yet sat. Release him and bring him.2 and said to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately on entering it, you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.
And if anyone will say to you: ‘What are you doing?’ Say that the Lord has need of him. And he will immediately send him here.”3 If anyone should say to you, 'Why are you doing this?' reply, 'The Master has need of it and will send it back here at once.'"
And going out, they found the colt tied before the outer gate, at the meeting of two ways. And they untied him.4 So they went off and found a colt tethered at a gate outside on the street, and they untied it.
And some of those who were standing there said to them, “What are you doing by releasing the colt?”5 Some of the bystanders said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?"
And they spoke to them just as Jesus had instructed them. And they permitted them.6 They answered them just as Jesus had told them to, and they permitted them to do it.
And they led the colt to Jesus. And they placed their garments on it; and he sat upon it.7 So they brought the colt to Jesus and put their cloaks over it. And he sat on it.
Then many spread their garments along the way; but others cut down leafy branches from trees and scattered them on the way.8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields.
And those who went ahead, and those who followed, cried out saying: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who has arrived in the name of the Lord.9 Those preceding him as well as those following kept crying out: "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed is the advent of the kingdom of our father David. Hosanna in the highest!”10 Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!"
And he entered into Jerusalem, into the temple. And having looked around at everything, since it was now the evening hour, he went out to Bethania with the twelve.11 He entered Jerusalem and went into the temple area. He looked around at everything and, since it was already late, went out to Bethany with the Twelve.
And the next day, as they were departing from Bethania, he was hungry.12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany he was hungry.
And when he had seen a fig tree with leaves in the distance, he went to it, in case he might find something on it. And when he had gone to it, he found nothing but leaves. For it was not the season for figs.13 Seeing from a distance a fig tree in leaf, he went over to see if he could find anything on it. When he reached it he found nothing but leaves; it was not the time for figs.
And in response, he said to it, “From now on and forever, may no one eat fruit from you again!” And his disciples heard this.14 And he said to it in reply, "May no one ever eat of your fruit again!" And his disciples heard it.
And they went to Jerusalem. And when he had entered into the temple, he began to cast out the sellers and the buyers in the temple. And he overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the chairs of the vendors of doves.15 They came to Jerusalem, and on entering the temple area he began to drive out those selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves.
And he would not permit anyone to carry goods through the temple.16 He did not permit anyone to carry anything through the temple area.
And he taught them, saying: “Is it not written: ‘For my house shall be called the house of prayer for all nations?’ But you have made it into a den of robbers.”17 Then he taught them saying, "Is it not written: 'My house shall be called a house of prayerfor all peoples'? But you have made it a den of thieves."
And when the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, had heard this, they sought a means by which they might destroy him. For they feared him, because the entire multitude was in admiration over his doctrine.18 The chief priests and the scribes came to hear of it and were seeking a way to put him to death, yet they feared him because the whole crowd was astonished at his teaching.
And when evening had arrived, he departed from the city.19 When evening came, they went out of the city.
And when they passed by in the morning, they saw that the fig tree had dried up from the roots.20 Early in the morning, as they were walking along, they saw the fig tree withered to its roots.
And Peter, remembering, said to him, “Master, behold, the fig tree that you cursed has withered.”21 Peter remembered and said to him, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered."
And in response, Jesus said to them: “Have the faith of God.22 Jesus said to them in reply, "Have faith in God.
Amen I say to you, that whoever will say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and who will not have hesitated in his heart, but will have believed: then whatever he has said be done, it shall be done for him.23 Amen, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it shall be done for him.
For this reason, I say to you, all things whatsoever that you ask for when praying: believe that you will receive them, and they will happen for you.24 Therefore I tell you, all that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours.
And when you stand to pray, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your sins.25 When you stand to pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance, so that your heavenly Father may in turn forgive you your transgressions."
But if you will not forgive, neither will your Father, who is in heaven, forgive you your sins.”26 )
And they went again to Jerusalem. And when he was walking in the temple, the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, and the elders approached him.27 They returned once more to Jerusalem. As he was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders approached him
And they said to him: “By what authority do you do these things? And who has given you this authority, so that you would do these things?”28 and said to him, "By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do them?"
But in response, Jesus said to them: “I also will ask you one word, and if you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I do these things.29 Jesus said to them, "I shall ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
The baptism of John: was it from heaven or from men? Answer me.”30 Was John's baptism of heavenly or of human origin? Answer me."
But they discussed it among themselves, saying: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’31 They discussed this among themselves and said, "If we say, 'Of heavenly origin,' he will say, '(Then) why did you not believe him?'
If we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the people. For they all hold that John was a true prophet.”32 But shall we say, 'Of human origin'?"--they feared the crowd, for they all thought John really was a prophet.
And answering, they said to Jesus, “We do not know.” And in response, Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”33 So they said to Jesus in reply, "We do not know." Then Jesus said to them, "Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things."
