And as they were approaching Jerusalem and Bethania, toward the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,1 Cuando se aproximaban a Jerusalén, cerca ya de Betfagé y Betania, al pie del monte de los Olivos, envía a dos de sus discípulos,
and he said to them: “Go into the village that is opposite you, and immediately upon entering there, you will find a colt tied, on which no man has yet sat. Release him and bring him.2 diciéndoles: «Id al pueblo que está enfrente de vosotros, y no bien entréis en él, encontraréis un pollino atado, sobre el que no ha montado todavía ningún hombre. Desatadlo y traedlo.
And if anyone will say to you: ‘What are you doing?’ Say that the Lord has need of him. And he will immediately send him here.”3 Y si alguien os dice: “¿Por qué hacéis eso?”, decid: “El Señor lo necesita, y que lo devolverá en seguida”».
And going out, they found the colt tied before the outer gate, at the meeting of two ways. And they untied him.4 Fueron y encontraron el pollino atado junto a una puerta, fuera, en la calle, y lo desataron.
And some of those who were standing there said to them, “What are you doing by releasing the colt?”5 Algunos de los que estaban allí les dijeron: «¿Qué hacéis desatando el pollino?»
And they spoke to them just as Jesus had instructed them. And they permitted them.6 Ellos les contestaron según les había dicho Jesús, y les dejaron.
And they led the colt to Jesus. And they placed their garments on it; and he sat upon it.7 Traen el pollino donde Jesús, echaron encima sus mantos y se sentó sobre él.
Then many spread their garments along the way; but others cut down leafy branches from trees and scattered them on the way.8 Muchos extendieron sus mantos por el camino; otros, follaje cortado de los campos.
And those who went ahead, and those who followed, cried out saying: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who has arrived in the name of the Lord.9 Los que iban delante y los que le seguían, gritaban: «¡Hosanna! ¡Bendito el que viene en nombre del Señor!
Blessed is the advent of the kingdom of our father David. Hosanna in the highest!”10 ¡Bendito el reino que viene, de nuestro padre David! ¡Hosanna en las alturas!»
And he entered into Jerusalem, into the temple. And having looked around at everything, since it was now the evening hour, he went out to Bethania with the twelve.11 Y entró en Jerusalén, en el Templo, y después de observar todo a su alrededor, siendo ya tarde, salió con los Doce para Betania.
And the next day, as they were departing from Bethania, he was hungry.12 Al día siguiente, saliendo ellos de Betania, sintió hambre.
And when he had seen a fig tree with leaves in the distance, he went to it, in case he might find something on it. And when he had gone to it, he found nothing but leaves. For it was not the season for figs.13 Y viendo de lejos una higuera con hojas, fue a ver si encontraba algo en ella; acercándose a ella, no encontró más que hojas; es que no era tiempo de higos.
And in response, he said to it, “From now on and forever, may no one eat fruit from you again!” And his disciples heard this.14 Entonces le dijo: «¡Que nunca jamás coma nadie fruto de ti!» Y sus discípulos oían esto.
And they went to Jerusalem. And when he had entered into the temple, he began to cast out the sellers and the buyers in the temple. And he overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the chairs of the vendors of doves.15 Llegan a Jerusalén; y entrando en el Templo, comenzó a echar fuera a los que vendían y a los que compraban en el Templo; volcó las mesas de los cambistas y los puestos de los vendedores de palomas
And he would not permit anyone to carry goods through the temple.16 y no permitía que nadie transportase cosas por el Templo.
And he taught them, saying: “Is it not written: ‘For my house shall be called the house of prayer for all nations?’ But you have made it into a den of robbers.”17 Y les enseñaba, diciéndoles: «¿No está escrito: Mi Casa será llamada Casa de oración para todas las gentes? ¡Pero vosotros la tenéis hecha una cueva de bandidos!»
And when the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, had heard this, they sought a means by which they might destroy him. For they feared him, because the entire multitude was in admiration over his doctrine.18 Se enteraron de esto los sumos sacerdotes y los escribas y buscaban cómo podrían matarle; porque le tenían miedo, pues toda la gente estaba asombrada de su doctrina.
And when evening had arrived, he departed from the city.19 Y al atardecer, salía fuera de la ciudad.
And when they passed by in the morning, they saw that the fig tree had dried up from the roots.20 Al pasar muy de mañana, vieron la higuera, que estaba seca hasta la raíz.
And Peter, remembering, said to him, “Master, behold, the fig tree that you cursed has withered.”21 Pedro, recordándolo, le dice: «¡Rabbí, mira!, la higuera que maldijiste está seca».
And in response, Jesus said to them: “Have the faith of God.22 Jesús les respondió: «Tened fe en Dios.
Amen I say to you, that whoever will say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and who will not have hesitated in his heart, but will have believed: then whatever he has said be done, it shall be done for him.23 Yo os aseguro que quien diga a este monte: “Quítate y arrójate al mar” y no vacile en su corazón sino que crea que va a suceder lo que dice, lo obtendrá.
For this reason, I say to you, all things whatsoever that you ask for when praying: believe that you will receive them, and they will happen for you.24 Por eso os digo: todo cuanto pidáis en la oración, creed que ya lo habéis recibido y lo obtendréis.
And when you stand to pray, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your sins.25 Y cuando os pongáis de pie para orar, perdonad, si tenéis algo contra alguno, para que también vuestro Padre, que está en los cielos, os perdone vuestras ofensas».
But if you will not forgive, neither will your Father, who is in heaven, forgive you your sins.”
And they went again to Jerusalem. And when he was walking in the temple, the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, and the elders approached him.27 Vuelven a Jerusalén y, mientras paseaba por el Templo, se le acercan los sumos sacerdotes, los escribas y los ancianos,
And they said to him: “By what authority do you do these things? And who has given you this authority, so that you would do these things?”28 y le decían: «¿Con qué autoridad haces esto?, o ¿quién te ha dado tal autoridad para hacerlo?»
But in response, Jesus said to them: “I also will ask you one word, and if you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I do these things.29 Jesús les dijo: «Os voy a preguntar una cosa. Respondedme y os diré con qué autoridad hago esto.
The baptism of John: was it from heaven or from men? Answer me.”30 El bautismo de Juan, ¿era del cielo o de los hombres? Respondedme».
But they discussed it among themselves, saying: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’31 Ellos discurrían entre sí: «Si decimos: “Del cielo”, dirá: “Entonces, ¿por qué no le creísteis?”
If we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the people. For they all hold that John was a true prophet.”32 Pero ¿vamos a decir: “De los hombres?”» Tenían miedo a la gente; pues todos tenían a Juan por un verdadero profeta.
And answering, they said to Jesus, “We do not know.” And in response, Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”33 Responden, pues, a Jesús: «No sabemos». Jesús entonces les dice: «Tampoco yo os digo con qué autoridad hago esto».
