1 And it happened that, when king Hezekiah had heard this, he rent his garments, and he wrapped himself in sackcloth, and he entered the house of the Lord.	1 Lorsque le roi Ézékias entendit ces paroles, il déchira ses habits, il se couvrit d’un sac et se rendit à la Maison de Yahvé.
2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the house, and Shebna, the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah, the son of Amoz, the prophet.	2 Puis il envoya le maître du palais Élyakim, le secrétaire Chebna et les anciens des prêtres vers le prophète Isaïe, fils d’Amos; tous étaient vêtus de sacs.
3 And they said to him: “Thus says Hezekiah: This day is a day of tribulation, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy. For the sons have arrived at the time for birth, but there is not enough strength to bring them forth.	3 Ils lui dirent: “Voici ce que dit Ézékias: ce jour est un jour de malheur, de châtiment et de honte. L’enfant est pour sortir du sein maternel, mais la force manque pour accoucher.
4 Perhaps, somehow, the Lord your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of the Assyrians, his lord, has sent to blaspheme the living God, and will rebuke the words that the Lord your God has heard. Therefore, lift up your prayers on behalf of the remnant which has been left behind.”	4 Que Yahvé ton Dieu entende toutes les paroles du grand échanson, que le roi d’Assyrie, son seigneur, a envoyé pour insulter le Dieu vivant. Que Yahvé ton Dieu punisse les paroles qu’il a entendues; et toi, fais monter une prière en faveur du reste qui tient encore.”
5 And so the servants of king Hezekiah went to Isaiah.	5 Les serviteurs du roi arrivèrent auprès d’Isaïe.
6 And Isaiah said to them: “You shall say this to your lord: Thus says the Lord: Do not be afraid to face the words that you have heard, by which the servants of the king of the Assyrians blasphemed me.	6 Isaïe leur dit: “Vous redirez à votre maître cette parole de Yahvé: N’aie pas peur des paroles que tu as entendues, ces blasphèmes que les serviteurs du roi d’Assyrie ont prononcés contre moi.
7 Behold, I will send a spirit to him, and he will hear a message, and he will return to his own land. And I will cause him to fall by the sword, in his own land.”	7 Je vais agir sur son esprit, lui faire entendre une nouvelle qui le fera reprendre la route de son pays et, dans son pays, je le ferai tomber par l’épée.”
8 Then Rabshakeh returned, and he found the king of the Assyrians fighting against Libnah. For he had heard that he had set out from Lachish.	8 Le grand échanson repartit vers le roi d’Assyrie qui combattait contre Libna. Le grand échanson savait déjà que le roi avait quitté Lakish
9 And he heard from Tirhakah, the king of Ethiopia: “He has gone forth so that he may fight against you.” And when he had heard this, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying:	9 après avoir reçu cette nouvelle: “Tirhaka, roi de Kouch, s’est mis en route pour te faire la guerre.” De nouveau donc, le roi envoya des messagers à Ézékias pour lui dire:
10 “You shall say this to Hezekiah, the king of Judah, saying: Do not let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you by saying: ‘Jerusalem will not be given into the hands of the king of the Assyrians.’	10 “Voici ce que vous direz à Ézékias, roi de Juda: Tu mets ta confiance en ton Dieu et tu dis que Jérusalem ne sera pas livrée entre les mains du roi d’Assyrie. Mais ton Dieu pourrait bien te décevoir.
11 Behold, you have heard about all that the kings of the Assyrians have done to all the lands that they have conquered, and so, how can you be delivered?	11 Tu as entendu ce que les rois d’Assyrie ont fait à tous les pays: ils les ont voués à l’anathème. Pourquoi toi serais-tu délivré?
12 Have the gods of the nations rescued those whom my fathers have conquered: Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the sons of Eden who were at Telassar?	12 Les dieux des nations que mes pères ont exterminées, Gozan, Harrân, Récef et les Édénites qui étaient à Tel-Basar, ont-ils été capables de les sauver?
13 Where is the king of Hamath and the king of Arpad, or the king of the city of Sepharvaim, or of Hena and Ivvah?”	13 Où sont les rois de Hamat, d’Arpad, de Laïr, de Séfarvayim, de Héna et d’Ivva?”
14 And Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers, and he read it, and he went up to the house of the Lord, and Hezekiah spread it out in the sight of the Lord.	14 Ézékias prit la lettre des mains des messagers et la lut, puis il se rendit à la Maison de Yahvé et la déroula devant Yahvé.
15 And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord, saying:	15 Ézékias fit cette prière à Yahvé:
16 “O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel who sits upon the Cherubim: you alone are God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.	16 “Yahvé Sabaot, Dieu d’Israël, toi qui sièges sur les Chérubins, dans tous les royaumes de la terre il n’y a pas d’autre Dieu que toi. C’est toi qui as fait le ciel et la terre.
17 O Lord, incline your ear and listen. O Lord, open your eyes and see. And hear all the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to blaspheme the living God.	17 Prête l’oreille, Yahvé, entends. Ouvre les yeux, Yahvé, et vois! Entends les paroles de Sennakérib, ses blasphèmes contre le Dieu vivant.
18 For truly, O Lord, the kings of the Assyrians have laid waste to countries and territories.	18 “C’est vrai, Yahvé, les rois d’Assyrie ont ravagé les pays païens
19 And they have cast their gods into the fire. For these were not gods, but the works of men’s hands, of wood and of stone. And they broke them into pieces.	19 et ils ont jeté au feu leurs dieux car ce n’étaient pas des dieux. Ce n’était que du bois, de la pierre, l’œuvre des mains de l’homme; ils les ont donc détruits.
20 And now, O Lord our God, save us from his hand. And let all the kingdoms of the earth acknowledge that you alone are Lord.”	20 Mais maintenant, Yahvé notre Dieu, délivre-nous de sa main, je t’en prie, et tous les royaumes de la terre sauront que toi seul Yahvé, tu es Dieu!”
21 And Isaiah, the son of Amoz, sent to Hezekiah, saying: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Because of what you have prayed to me about Sennacherib, the king of the Assyrians,	21 Isaïe fils d’Amos envoya dire ceci à Ézékias: “Voici ce que dit Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël: J’ai entendu la prière que tu m’as adressée au sujet de Sennakérib, roi d’Assyrie.
22 this is the word that the Lord has spoken over him: The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and mocked you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.	22 Écoute la parole que Yahvé a prononcée contre lui: “Elle te méprise, elle se moque de toi, la vierge fille de Sion, elle secoue la tête en te regardant, la fille de Jérusalem.
23 Whom have you insulted? And whom have you blasphemed? And against whom have you lifted up your voice and raised up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel!	23 Qui as-tu insulté avec tes blasphèmes? Contre qui as-tu élevé la voix et levé tes yeux pleins d’orgueil? Contre le Saint d’Israël!
24 By the hand of your servants, you have reproached the Lord. And you have said: ‘With a multitude of my four-horse chariots, I have ascended the heights of the mountains adjoining Lebanon. And I will cut down its lofty cedars and its choice pine trees. And I will reach the top of its summit, to the forest of its Carmel.	24 Par la bouche de tes messagers tu as insulté le Seigneur! Tu as dit: avec mes nombreux chars j’ai gravi les sommets des montagnes, les pentes du Liban. J’ai coupé la forêt de cèdres et les plus beaux de ses cyprès. J’ai atteint le plus lointain de ses repaires et son jardin boisé.
25 I dug deep, and I drank water, and I dried up all the river banks with the sole of my foot.’	25 J’ai creusé et j’ai bu des eaux étrangères, j’ai desséché sous la plante de mes pieds tous les canaux de l’Égypte.
26 Have you not heard what I have done to it in past times? In ancient times, I formed it. And now I have brought it forth. And it has been made so that the hills and the fortified cities would fight together, unto its destruction.	26 On ne t’a donc pas dit que depuis longtemps je préparais cela? Dès le commencement j’ai fait un projet, que maintenant je réalise. Tu devais transformer des villes fortifiées en un tas de ruines;
27 Their inhabitants had unsteady hands. They trembled and were confused. They became like the plants of the field, and the grass of the pastures, and like the weeds on the rooftops, which wither before they are mature.	27 leurs habitants, trop faibles, étaient effrayés, apeurés; ils étaient comme l’herbe des champs, comme le gazon encore vert, comme la mousse qui pousse sur les toits, comme le grain qui rouille avant de devenir épi.
28 I know your habitation, and your arrival, and your departure, and your madness against me.	28 Mais je sais lorsque tu t’assieds, lorsque tu sors et que tu rentres!
29 When you became angry against me, your arrogance rose up to my ears. Therefore, I will place a ring in your nose, and a bit between your lips. And I will turn you back on the road by which you arrived.	29 Tu t’es mis en colère contre moi et ton insolence est montée jusqu’à mes oreilles, aussi je vais passer mon anneau à ta narine, et mon mors à tes lèvres, et je te reconduirai par le chemin par lequel tu es venu.
30 But this shall be a sign for you: Eat, in this year, whatever springs up on its own. And in the second year, eat fruits. But in the third year, sow and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.	30 “Maintenant, voici un signe pour toi, Ézékias: cette année on mangera du grain tombé; l’an prochain, le grain qui pousse tout seul, mais la troisième année vous sèmerez et vous moissonnerez; vous planterez des vignes et vous en mangerez le fruit.
31 And what will be saved from the house of Judah, and what is left behind, will form deep roots, and will bear high fruits.	31 “Les rescapés de la maison de Juda donneront de nouveau des racines en bas et des fruits en haut.
32 For from Jerusalem, a remnant shall go forth, and salvation from mount Zion. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.	32 “Car de Jérusalem sortira un reste, et du mont Sion, des survivants. Ce sera l’œuvre de Yahvé Sabaot et de son soin jaloux.
33 For this reason, thus says the Lord about the king of the Assyrians: He will not enter this city, nor shoot an arrow into it, nor overtake it with a shield, nor dig a rampart all around it.	33 “C’est pourquoi, voici ce que Yahvé dit au sujet du roi d’Assyrie: Il n’entrera pas dans cette ville et il n’y lancera pas de flèches. Il ne dressera pas contre elle le bouclier, il ne fera pas monter un remblai,
34 He will return on the road by which he arrived. And into this city, he will not enter, says the Lord.	34 mais il retournera par le chemin par lequel il est venu. “Il n’entrera pas dans cette ville - parole de Yahvé!
35 And I will protect this city, so that I may save it for my own sake, and for the sake of David, my servant.”	35 Je protégerai cette ville et je la sauverai, par respect pour moi-même et pour mon serviteur David.”
36 Then the Angel of the Lord went forth and struck down, in the camp of the Assyrians, one hundred eighty-five thousand. And they arose in the morning, and behold, all these were dead bodies.	36 Cette même nuit l’ange de Yahvé sortit et frappa dans le camp des Assyriens 185 000 hommes. Le matin quand on se leva il n’y avait que des cadavres: tous morts!
37 And Sennacherib, the king of the Assyrians, departed and went away. And he returned and lived at Nineveh.	37 Sennakérib roi d’Assyrie partit donc et revint séjourner à Ninive.
38 And it happened that, as he was adoring his god in the temple of Nisroch, his sons, Adramelech and Sharezer, struck him with the sword. And they fled into the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon, his son, reigned in his place.	38 Là, pendant qu’il était prosterné dans la Maison de son dieu Nisrok, ses fils Adramélek et Sarécer le frappèrent de leur épée et prirent la fuite au pays d’Ararat. Asarhaddon, son fils, devint roi à sa place.
