Proverbs 12

CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge. But whoever hates correction is unwise.1 He who loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.
Whoever is good shall draw grace from the Lord. But whoever trusts in his own thoughts acts impiously.2 The good man wins favor from the LORD, but the schemer is condemned by him.
Man will not be made strong from impiety. And the root of the just shall not be moved.3 No man is built up by wickedness, but the root of the just will never be disturbed.
A diligent woman is a crown to her husband. And she who acts with confusion as to which things are worthy is decay to his bones.4 A worthy wife is the crown of her husband, but a disgraceful one is like rot in his bones.
The thoughts of the just are judgments. And the counsels of the impious are dishonest.5 The plans of the just are legitimate; the designs of the wicked are deceitful.
The words of the impious lie in wait for blood. The mouth of the just shall free them.6 The words of the wicked are a deadly ambush, but the speech of the upright saves them.
Turn from the impious, and they will not be. But the house of the just shall stand firm.7 The wicked are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the just stands firm.
A man will be known by his doctrine. But whoever is vain and heartless will suffer contempt.8 According to his good sense a man is praised, but one with a warped mind is despised.
Better is a pauper who has what he needs, than someone glorious and in need of bread.9 Better a lowly man who supports himself than one of assumed importance who lacks bread.
The just one knows the lives of his beasts. But the inner most parts of the impious are cruel.10 The just man takes care of his beast, but the heart of the wicked is merciless.
Whoever works his land shall be satisfied with bread. But whoever continually pursues leisure is most foolish. Whoever is soothed by lingering over wine leaves behind contempt in his strongholds.11 He who tills his own land has food in plenty, but he who follows idle pursuits is a fool.
The desire of the impious is the fortification of what is most wicked. But the root of the just shall prosper.12 The stronghold of evil men will be demolished, but the root of the just is enduring.
For the sins of the lips draw ruin to the evil. But the just shall escape from distress.13 In the sin of his lips the evil man is ensnared, but the just comes free of trouble.
By the fruit of his own mouth, each one shall be filled with good things, and according to the works of his own hands, it will be distributed to him.14 From the fruit of his words a man has his fill of good things, and the work of his hands comes back to reward him.
The way of the foolish is right in his own eyes. But whoever is wise listens to counsels.15 The way of the fool seems right in his own eyes, but he who listens to advice is wise.
The senseless immediately reveals his anger. But whoever ignores injuries is clever.16 The fool immediately shows his anger, but the shrewd man passes over an insult.
He is a sign of justice, who speaks what he knows. But whoever deceives is a dishonest witness.17 He tells the truth who states what he is sure of, but a lying witness speaks deceitfully.
He who makes promises is also jabbed, as if with a sword, in conscience. But the tongue of the wise is reasonable.18 The prating of some men is like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise is healing.
The lips of truth shall be steadfast forever. But a hasty witness readies a lying tongue.19 Truthful lips endure forever, the lying tongue, for only a moment.
Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evils. But gladness follows those who take up counsels of peace.20 Deceit is in the hands of those who plot evil, but those who counsel peace have joy.
Whatever may befall the just, it will not discourage him. But the impious will be filled with disasters.21 No harm befalls the just, but the wicked are overwhelmed with misfortune.
Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord. But whoever acts faithfully pleases him.22 Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who are truthful are his delight.
A resourceful man conceals knowledge. And the heart of the unwise provokes foolishness.23 A shrewd man conceals his knowledge, but the hearts of fools gush forth folly.
The hand of the strong will rule. But anyone who is neglectful will pay tribute.24 The diligent hand will govern, but the slothful will be enslaved.
Grief in the heart of a man humbles him. And with a good word he shall be made glad.25 Anxiety in a man's heart depresses it, but a kindly word makes it glad.
He who ignores a loss for the sake of a friend is just. But the way of the impious will deceive them.26 The just man surpasses his neighbor, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.
The dishonest will not discover gain. But the substance of a man will be like precious gold.27 The slothful man catches not his prey, but the wealth of the diligent man is great.
In the path of justice, there is life. But the devious way leads to death.28 In the path of justice there is life, but the abominable way leads to death.
