CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINLXX
But now, those younger in years scorn me, whose fathers I would not have seen fit to place with the dogs of my flock,1 νυνι δε κατεγελασαν μου ελαχιστοι νυν νουθετουσιν με εν μερει ων εξουδενουν πατερας αυτων ους ουχ ηγησαμην ειναι αξιους κυνων των εμων νομαδων
the strength of whose hands was nothing to me, and they were considered unworthy of life itself.2 και γε ισχυς χειρων αυτων ινα τι μοι επ' αυτους απωλετο συντελεια
They were barren from poverty and hunger; they gnawed in solitude, layered with misfortune and misery.3 εν ενδεια και λιμω αγονος οι φευγοντες ανυδρον εχθες συνοχην και ταλαιπωριαν
And they chewed grass and the bark from trees, and the root of junipers was their food.4 οι περικλωντες αλιμα επι ηχουντι οιτινες αλιμα ην αυτων τα σιτα ατιμοι δε και πεφαυλισμενοι ενδεεις παντος αγαθου οι και ριζας ξυλων εμασωντο υπο λιμου μεγαλου
They took these things from the steep valleys, and when they discovered one of these things, they rushed to the others with a cry.5 επανεστησαν μοι κλεπται
They lived in the parched desert and in caves underground or above the rocks.6 ων οι οικοι αυτων ησαν τρωγλαι πετρων
They rejoiced among these kinds of things, and they considered it delightful to be under thorns.7 ανα μεσον ευηχων βοησονται οι υπο φρυγανα αγρια διητωντο
These are the sons of foolish and base men, not even paying any attention to the land.8 αφρονων υιοι και ατιμων ονομα και κλεος εσβεσμενον απο γης
Now I become their song, and I have been made into their proverb.9 νυνι δε κιθαρα εγω ειμι αυτων και εμε θρυλημα εχουσιν
They loathe me, and so they flee far from me, and they are not reluctant to spit in my face.10 εβδελυξαντο δε με αποσταντες μακραν απο δε προσωπου μου ουκ εφεισαντο πτυελον
For he has opened his quiver and has afflicted me, and he has placed a bridle in my mouth.11 ανοιξας γαρ φαρετραν αυτου εκακωσεν με και χαλινον του προσωπου μου εξαπεστειλαν
Immediately, upon rising, my calamities rise up to the right. They have overturned my feet and have pressed me down along their way like waves.12 επι δεξιων βλαστου επανεστησαν ποδα αυτων εξετειναν και ωδοποιησαν επ' εμε τριβους απωλειας αυτων
They have diverted my journeys; they have waited to ambush me, and they have prevailed, and there was no one who might bring help.13 εξετριβησαν τριβοι μου εξεδυσεν γαρ μου την στολην
They have rushed upon me, as when a wall is broken or a gate opened, and they have been pulled down into my miseries.14 βελεσιν αυτου κατηκοντισεν με κεχρηται μοι ως βουλεται εν οδυναις πεφυρμαι
I have been reduced to nothing. You have taken away my desire like a wind, and my health has passed by like a cloud.15 επιστρεφονται δε μου αι οδυναι ωχετο μου η ελπις ωσπερ πνευμα και ωσπερ νεφος η σωτηρια μου
But now my soul withers within myself, and the days of affliction take hold of me.16 και νυν επ' εμε εκχυθησεται η ψυχη μου εχουσιν δε με ημεραι οδυνων
At night, my bone is pierced with sorrows, and those who feed on me, do not sleep.17 νυκτι δε μου τα οστα συγκεκαυται τα δε νευρα μου διαλελυται
By the sheer number of them my clothing is worn away, and they have closed in on me like the collar of my coat.18 εν πολλη ισχυι επελαβετο μου της στολης ωσπερ το περιστομιον του χιτωνος μου περιεσχεν με
I have been treated like dirt, and I have been turned into embers and ashes.19 ηγησαι δε με ισα πηλω εν γη και σποδω μου η μερις
I cry to you, and you do not heed me. I stand up, and you do not look back at me.20 κεκραγα δε προς σε και ουκ εισακουεις μου εστησαν και κατενοησαν με
You have changed me into hardness, and, with the hardness of your hand, you oppose me.21 επεβης δε μοι ανελεημονως χειρι κραταια με εμαστιγωσας
You have lifted me up, and, placing me as if on the wind, you have thrown me down powerfully.22 εταξας δε με εν οδυναις και απερριψας με απο σωτηριας
I know that you will hand me over to death, where a home has been established for all the living.23 οιδα γαρ οτι θανατος με εκτριψει οικια γαρ παντι θνητω γη
Truly, then, you do not extend your hand in order to consume them, and if they fall down, you will save them.24 ει γαρ οφελον δυναιμην εμαυτον χειρωσασθαι η δεηθεις γε ετερου και ποιησει μοι τουτο
Once, I wept over him who was afflicted, and my soul had compassion on the poor.25 εγω δε επι παντι αδυνατω εκλαυσα εστεναξα δε ιδων ανδρα εν αναγκαις
I expected good things, but evil things have come to me. I stood ready for light, yet darkness burst forth.26 εγω δε επεχων αγαθοις ιδου συνηντησαν μοι μαλλον ημεραι κακων
My insides have seethed, without any rest, for the days of affliction have prevented it.27 η κοιλια μου εξεζεσεν και ου σιωπησεται προεφθασαν με ημεραι πτωχειας
I went forth mourning, without anger, and rising up, I cried out in confusion.28 στενων πεπορευμαι ανευ φιμου εστηκα δε εν εκκλησια κεκραγως
I was the brother of snakes, and the companion of ostriches.29 αδελφος γεγονα σειρηνων εταιρος δε στρουθων
My skin has become blackened over me, and my bones have dried up because of the heat.30 το δε δερμα μου εσκοτωται μεγαλως τα δε οστα μου απο καυματος
My harp has been turned into mourning, and my pipes have been turned into a voice of weeping.31 απεβη δε εις παθος μου η κιθαρα ο δε ψαλμος μου εις κλαυθμον εμοι
