Also, when the queen of Sheba had heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to Jerusalem, with great riches and with camels which were carrying aromatics, and very much gold, and precious gems, so that she might test him with enigmas. And when she had approached Solomon, she spoke to him all that was in her heart.1 La regina Saba, avendo udita la fama di Salomone, venne per tentarlo in figurate parole in Ierusalem, con grandi ricchezze, e con cammelli i quali portavano spezierie e molto oro e gemme preziose. E venuta lei a Salomone, dissegli tutto quello ch' ella avea nel cuore.
And Solomon explained for her all that she had proposed. And there was nothing that he did not make clear to her.2 E Salomone gli rispose tutto quello che gli avea proposto; e non fu nulla ch' egli non le facesse chiaro.
And after she saw these things, specifically, the wisdom of Solomon, and the house which he had built,3 La quale, veduta la sapienza di Salomone, e la casa la quale egli avea edificata,
indeed also the foods of his table, and the habitations of the servants, and the duties of his ministers, and their apparel, and also his cupbearers and their garments, and the victims which he was immolating in the house of the Lord, there was no longer any spirit in her, due to astonishment.4 e i cibi della mensa sua, e le abitazioni dei suoi servi, e gli uffizii del suo ministerio, e le vestimenta loro, e' donzelli e le robbe loro,.. e le vittime le quali egli sacrificava nella casa del Signore; per lo isbigottimento non rimase spirito in lei.
And she said to the king: “The word is true, which I had heard in my own land, about your virtues and wisdom.5 E disse al re: vero è il sermone, il quale io avea udito nella terra mia, delle tue virtudi e della tua sapienza.
I did not believe those who described it, until I had arrived and my eyes had seen, and I had proven that not even half of your wisdom had been described to me. You have exceeded your fame with your virtue.6 Io non il credea a coloro i quali mel narravano, tanto ch' io medesima ci sono venuta, e hoe veduto con gli miei occhi, e hoe provato che a fatica m'era narrata la metà della tua sapienza; però che tu hae con le virtù tue vinta la fama.
Blessed are your men, and blessed are your servants, who stand before you at all times and listen to your wisdom.7 Beati gli uomini tuoi, e beati i servi tuoi, i quali istanno nel tuo cospetto d'ogni tempo, e odono la tua sapienza!
Blessed is the Lord your God, who willed to set you upon his throne as a king for the Lord your God. Since God loves Israel, he wishes to preserve them unto eternity. For this reason, he appointed you as king over them, so that you may accomplish judgment and justice.”8 Sia benedetto il tuo Signore Iddio, il quale t' ha voluto ordinare sopra la sedia sua, re del tuo Signore Iddio! Però che Iddio ama Israel, e vollelo osservare in eterno, e' però t' ha posto re sopra di loro, acciò che tu faccia ragione e giustizia.
Then she gave to the king one hundred twenty talents of gold, and an exceedingly great abundance of aromatics, and very precious gems. Never were there such aromatics as those that the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.9 E diede al re CXX talenti d'oro, e spezie molte troppo, e gemme preziose; non furono tali spezie mai vedute, quali furono quelle che la regina Saba diede a Salomone.
Then too, the servants of Hiram, with the servants of Solomon, brought gold from Ophir, and wood from thyine trees, and very precious gems.10 E anco i servi d' Iram coi servi di Salomone portarono oro di Ofir, e legni timi, e gemme preziose.
And the king made, from this particular thyine wood, steps in the house of the Lord, and in the house of the king, and also harps and psalteries for the singing men. Never was there seen such wood in the land of Judah.11 De' quali legni fece il re Salomone gradi nella casa del Signore e nella casa del re, e chitarre e salterii alli cantori; mai nella terra di Giuda non furono veduti cotali legni.
Then king Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all that she desired, and all that she requested, and much more than what she had brought to him. And returning, she went away to her own land with her servants.12 E (donoe e) diede il re Salomone alla regina Saba tutte quelle cose le quali essa volse e domandò, molto più che ella avesse dato a lui; la quale ritornando nella terra sua, se n'andoe coi servi suoi.
Now the weight of the gold, which was being brought to Solomon throughout each year, was six hundred sixty-six talents of gold,13 Ed era il peso dell' oro, che si portava ogni anno a Salomone, secento [sessanta] sei talenti d'oro,
apart from the sum that the legates of various nations and the merchants were accustomed to bring, and apart from the gold and silver that all the kings of Arabia, and the princes of the lands, were bringing together for Solomon.14 senza quella somma la quale legati di diverse genti e mercatanti gli davano, e tutti i re d' Arabia e satrapi delle terre, li quali portavano oro e ariento a Salomone.
And so, king Solomon made two hundred gold spears, from six hundred gold pieces, the amount used for each spear,15 Onde fece re Salomone CC aste d'oro della somma di secento monete d'oro, le quali si spendeano in ciascuna asta,
and also three hundred gold shields, from three hundred gold pieces, which covered each shield. And the king placed them in the armory, which was situated in a forest.16 e CCC scudi d' oro, de' quali ciascuno era coperto di CCC monete d'oro; e puoseli il re nell'armamento, il quale era ornato di bosco.
Also, the king made a great ivory throne, and he clothed it with the purest gold.17 E fece il re una grande sedia di avolio; e vestilla d'oro mondissimo;
And there were six steps, by which he would ascend to the throne, and a footstool of gold, and two arms, one on each side, and two lions standing beside the arms.18 e sei gradi per li quali si montava alla sedia, e la predella dei piedi d'oro, e due bracciaiuoli da lato, e due leoni che stavano appresso ai bracciaiuoli;
Moreover, there were twelve additional little lions standing upon the six steps on both sides. There was no similar throne in all the kingdoms.19 e altri XII leoncelli, i quali istavano sopra quelli sei gradi d'ogni lato; e in tutti i regni non fu cos fatta sedia.
Also, all the vessels for the feasts of the king were of gold, and the vessels of the forest house of Lebanon were from the purest gold. For silver in those days was considered as nothing.20 E tutte le vasa del convito del re erano d'oro; e le vasa della casa del bosco del Libano tutte erano d'oro purissimo; e in quello tempo l'ariento era tenuto per nulla.
For indeed, the ships of the king went to Tarshish, with the servants of Hiram, once every three years. And they brought from there gold, and silver, and ivory, and primates, and peacocks.21 Però che le navi del re andavano in Tarso co' servi di Iram, una volta in tre anni; e portavano indi oro e ariento e avolio e scimie e paoni.
And so, Solomon was magnified above all the kings of the earth in wealth and glory.22 Onde che Salomone fu magnificato sopra tutti i re della terra, di ricchezze e di gloria.
And all the kings of the lands were desiring to see the face of Solomon, so that they might hear the wisdom that God had granted to his heart.23 E tutti i re delle terre desideravano di vedere il viso di Salomone, per udire la sapienza la quale Iddio avea data nel suo cuore.
And they were bringing to him gifts, vessels of silver and of gold, and garments, and armor, and aromatics, and horses, and mules, throughout each year.24 E portavanli donamenti, cioè vasa d'oro e d'ariento, vestimenta e arme e spezierie, cavalli e muli, ogni anno.
Also, Solomon had forty thousand horses in the stables, and twelve thousand chariots and horsemen, and he appointed them to the cities of the chariots, and where the king was in Jerusalem.25 Ed ebbe Salomone XL milia di cavalli nelle stalle sue, e carra di cavalli XII milia; e distribuigli per la città delle quadrighe, e dove ch' era il re in Ierusalem.
Now he also exercised authority over all the kings from the river Euphrates as far as the land of the Philistines, and as far as the borders of Egypt.26 Ed ebbe podestà sopra tutti gli re, dal fiume (di) Eufrate insino alla terra de' Filistei, cioè insino ai termini d' Egitto.
And he brought forth so much silver that it was as plentiful in Jerusalem as stones. And cedar trees were as great in number as the sycamores that spring up in the plains.27 E diede tanta copia d'ariento in Ierusalem quasi come pietre; e tanta moltitudine di cedri, quasi come sicomori che nascono per gli campestri.
And horses were brought to him from Egypt and from every region.28 Ed erangli menati cavalli d' Egitto e di tutte le provincie.
Now the rest of the works of Solomon, the first and the last, have been written in the words of Nathan, the prophet, and in the books of Ahijah, the Shilonite, as well as in the vision of Iddo, the seer, against Jeroboam, the son of Nabat.29 Tutte l'altre opere di Salomone, prime e ultime, sono scritte nel libro (delle parole) di Natan profeta, e nelli libri di Aia di Silo, e anco nella visione di Addo vidente, contra Ieroboam figliuolo di Nabat.
And Solomon reigned in Jerusalem, over all of Israel, for forty years.30 E regnò Salomone in Ierusalem sopra tutto Israel XL anni.
And he slept with his fathers. And they buried him in the City of David. And his son, Rehoboam, reigned in his place.31 E dormi (Salomone) coi padri suoi, e fu seppellito nella città di David; e (dopo lui) regnò per lui Roboam suo figliuolo.
