Also, when the queen of Sheba had heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to Jerusalem, with great riches and with camels which were carrying aromatics, and very much gold, and precious gems, so that she might test him with enigmas. And when she had approached Solomon, she spoke to him all that was in her heart.1 La reine de Saba apprit la renommée de Salomon et vint à Jérusalem éprouver Salomon pardes énigmes. Elle arriva avec de très grandes richesses, des chameaux chargés d'aromates, quantité d'or et depierres précieuses. Quand elle se fut rendue auprès de Salomon, elle s'entretint avec lui de tout ce qu'elle avaitmédité.
And Solomon explained for her all that she had proposed. And there was nothing that he did not make clear to her.2 Salomon l'éclaira sur toutes ses questions et aucune ne fut pour lui un secret qu'il ne pûtélucider.
And after she saw these things, specifically, the wisdom of Solomon, and the house which he had built,3 Lorsque la reine de Saba vit la sagesse de Salomon, le palais qu'il s'était construit,
indeed also the foods of his table, and the habitations of the servants, and the duties of his ministers, and their apparel, and also his cupbearers and their garments, and the victims which he was immolating in the house of the Lord, there was no longer any spirit in her, due to astonishment.4 le menu de sa table, le placement de ses officiers, le service de ses gens et leur livrée, seséchansons et leur livrée, les holocaustes qu'il offrait au Temple de Yahvé, le coeur lui manqua
And she said to the king: “The word is true, which I had heard in my own land, about your virtues and wisdom.5 et elle dit au roi: "Ce que j'ai entendu dire dans mon pays sur toi et sur ta sagesse était doncvrai!
I did not believe those who described it, until I had arrived and my eyes had seen, and I had proven that not even half of your wisdom had been described to me. You have exceeded your fame with your virtue.6 Je n'ai pas voulu croire ce qu'on disait avant de venir et de voir de mes yeux, mais vraiment onne m'avait pas appris la moitié de l'étendue de ta sagesse: tu surpasses la renommée dont j'avais eu l'écho.
Blessed are your men, and blessed are your servants, who stand before you at all times and listen to your wisdom.7 Bienheureux tes gens, bienheureux tes serviteurs que voici, qui se tiennent continuellementdevant toi et qui entendent ta sagesse!
Blessed is the Lord your God, who willed to set you upon his throne as a king for the Lord your God. Since God loves Israel, he wishes to preserve them unto eternity. For this reason, he appointed you as king over them, so that you may accomplish judgment and justice.”8 Béni soit Yahvé, ton Dieu, qui t'a montré sa faveur en te plaçant sur son trône comme roi aunom de Yahvé ton Dieu; c'est parce que ton Dieu aime Israël et veut le maintenir à jamais qu'il t'en a donné laroyauté pour exercer le droit et la justice."
Then she gave to the king one hundred twenty talents of gold, and an exceedingly great abundance of aromatics, and very precious gems. Never were there such aromatics as those that the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.9 Elle donna au roi 120 talents d'or, une grande quantité d'aromates et des pierres précieuses.Les aromates que la reine de Saba apporta au roi Salomon étaient incomparables.
Then too, the servants of Hiram, with the servants of Solomon, brought gold from Ophir, and wood from thyine trees, and very precious gems.10 De même les serviteurs de Huram et les serviteurs de Salomon qui rapportèrent l'or d'Ophir, rapportèrent du bois d'algummim et des pierres précieuses.
And the king made, from this particular thyine wood, steps in the house of the Lord, and in the house of the king, and also harps and psalteries for the singing men. Never was there seen such wood in the land of Judah.11 Le roi fit avec le bois d'algummim des planchers pour le Temple de Yahvé et pour le palaisroyal, des lyres et des harpes pour les musiciens; on n'avait encore jamais rien vu de pareil dans le pays de Juda.
Then king Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all that she desired, and all that she requested, and much more than what she had brought to him.
Now the weight of the gold, which was being brought to Solomon throughout each year, was six hundred sixty-six talents of gold,13 Le poids de l'or qui arriva à Salomon en une année fut de 666 talents d'or,
apart from the sum that the legates of various nations and the merchants were accustomed to bring, and apart from the gold and silver that all the kings of Arabia, and the princes of the lands, were bringing together for Solomon.14 sans compter ce qui venait des redevances des marchands et des courtiers importateurs; tousles rois d'Arabie, tous les gouverneurs du pays apportaient également de l'or et de l'argent à Salomon.
And so, king Solomon made two hundred gold spears, from six hundred gold pieces, the amount used for each spear,15 Le roi Salomon fit 200 grands boucliers d'or battu, sur chacun desquels il appliqua 600 siclesd'or battu,
and also three hundred gold shields, from three hundred gold pieces, which covered each shield. And the king placed them in the armory, which was situated in a forest.16 et 300 petits boucliers d'or battu, sur chacun desquels il appliqua 300 sicles d'or, et il lesdéposa dans la Galerie de la Forêt du Liban.
Also, the king made a great ivory throne, and he clothed it with the purest gold.17 Le roi fit aussi un grand trône d'ivoire et le plaqua d'or raffiné.
And there were six steps, by which he would ascend to the throne, and a footstool of gold, and two arms, one on each side, and two lions standing beside the arms.18 Ce trône avait six degrés et un marchepied d'or qui lui étaient attachés, des bras de part etd'autre du siège et deux lions debout près des bras.
Moreover, there were twelve additional little lions standing upon the six steps on both sides. There was no similar throne in all the kingdoms.19 Douze lions se tenaient de part et d'autre des six degrés. On n'a rien fait de semblable dansaucun royaume.
Also, all the vessels for the feasts of the king were of gold, and the vessels of the forest house of Lebanon were from the purest gold. For silver in those days was considered as nothing.20 Tous les vases à boire du roi Salomon étaient en or et tout le mobilier de la Galerie de laForêt du Liban était en or fin; car on faisait fi de l'argent au temps du roi Salomon.
For indeed, the ships of the king went to Tarshish, with the servants of Hiram, once every three years. And they brought from there gold, and silver, and ivory, and primates, and peacocks.21 En effet le roi avait des navires allant à Tarsis avec les serviteurs de Huram et tous les troisans les navires revenaient de Tarsis chargés d'or, d'argent, d'ivoire, de singes et de guenons.
And so, Solomon was magnified above all the kings of the earth in wealth and glory.22 Le roi Salomon surpassa en richesse et en sagesse tous les rois de la terre.
And all the kings of the lands were desiring to see the face of Solomon, so that they might hear the wisdom that God had granted to his heart.23 Tous les rois de la terre voulaient être reçus par Salomon pour profiter de la sagesse que Dieului avait mise au coeur
And they were bringing to him gifts, vessels of silver and of gold, and garments, and armor, and aromatics, and horses, and mules, throughout each year.24 et chacun apportait son présent: vases d'argent et vases d'or, vêtements, armes et aromates, chevaux et mulets, et ainsi d'année en année.
Also, Solomon had forty thousand horses in the stables, and twelve thousand chariots and horsemen, and he appointed them to the cities of the chariots, and where the king was in Jerusalem.25 Salomon eut 4.000 stalles pour ses chevaux et ses chars, et 12.000 chevaux qu'il cantonnadans les villes de chars et près du roi à Jérusalem.
Now he also exercised authority over all the kings from the river Euphrates as far as the land of the Philistines, and as far as the borders of Egypt.26 Il étendit son pouvoir sur tous les rois depuis le Fleuve jusqu'au pays des Philistins et jusqu'àla frontière d'Egypte.
And he brought forth so much silver that it was as plentiful in Jerusalem as stones. And cedar trees were as great in number as the sycamores that spring up in the plains.27 Il rendit l'argent aussi commun à Jérusalem que les cailloux, et les cèdres aussi nombreuxque les sycomores du Bas-Pays.
And horses were brought to him from Egypt and from every region.28 On importait pour Salomon des chevaux de Muçur et de tous les pays.
Now the rest of the works of Solomon, the first and the last, have been written in the words of Nathan, the prophet, and in the books of Ahijah, the Shilonite, as well as in the vision of Iddo, the seer, against Jeroboam, the son of Nabat.29 Le reste de l'histoire de Salomon, du début à la fin, n'est-ce pas écrit dans l'histoire de Natânle prophète, dans la prophétie d'Ahiyya de Silo, et dans la vision de Yéddo le voyant concernant Jéroboam fils deNebat?
And Solomon reigned in Jerusalem, over all of Israel, for forty years.30 Salomon régna 40 ans à Jérusalem sur tout Israël.
And he slept with his fathers. And they buried him in the City of David. And his son, Rehoboam, reigned in his place.31 Puis il se coucha avec ses pères et on l'enterra dans la Cité de David, son père, et son filsRoboam régna à sa place.
