Also, Hiram, the king of Tyre, sent messengers to David, and cedar wood, and artisans of walls and of wood, so that they might build a house for him.1 Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, with cedar wood, stone-cutters and carpenters, to build hima palace.
And David realized that the Lord had confirmed him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom had been lifted up over his people Israel.2 David then knew that Yahweh had confirmed him as king of Israel and, for the sake of his people, hadextended his sovereignty.
Also, David took other wives in Jerusalem. And he conceived sons and daughters.3 David took more wives in Jerusalem and fathered more sons and daughters.
And these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua and Shobab, Nathan and Solomon,4 These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,
Ibhar, and Elishua, and Elpelet,5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet,
as well as Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,
Elishama, and Beeliada, and Eliphelet.7 Elishama, Beeliada, Eliphelet.
Then, hearing that David had been anointed as king over all of Israel, all the Philistines ascended so that they might seek him. But when David had heard of it, he went out to meet them.8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed as king of al Israel, they al invaded to seekhim out. On hearing this, David marched out towards them.
Now the Philistines, arriving, spread out in the Valley of the Rephaim.9 When the Philistines arrived, they deployed in the Val ey of the Rephaim.
And so David consulted the Lord, saying, “Shall I ascend to the Philistines, and will you deliver them into my hand?” And the Lord said to him, “Ascend, and I will deliver them into your hand.”10 David consulted God and asked, 'Shall I attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my power?'Yahweh replied to him, 'Attack! I shal deliver them into your power.'
And when they had ascended to Baal-perazim, David struck them there, and he said: “God has divided my enemies by my hand, just as waters are divided.” And therefore the name of that place was called Baal-perazim.11 Accordingly, they went up to Baal-Perazim and there David defeated them. David said, 'Through meGod has made a breach in my enemies, as though they had been breached by a flood.' This is why the placewas given the name Baal-Perazim.
And they left behind their gods in that place, and so David ordered them to be burned.12 They had left their gods behind there, and David ordered them to be burnt.
And then, at another time, the Philistines invaded, and they spread out in the valley.13 Again the Philistines deployed in the valley.
And again, David consulted God. And God said to him: “You shall not ascend after them. Draw away from them. And you shall come against them opposite the balsam trees.14 David again consulted God, and God replied, 'Do not attack them from the front; go round andengage them opposite the balsam trees.
And when you hear a sound approaching in the tops of the balsam trees, then you shall go forth to war. For God has gone forth before you, so that he may strike down the army of the Philistines.”15 When you hear the sound of footsteps in the tops of the balsam trees, launch your attack, for that willbe God going out ahead of you to defeat the Philistine army.'
Therefore, David did just as God had instructed him. And he struck down the army of the Philistines, from Gibeon as far as Gazera.16 David did as God had ordered, and they beat the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer.
And the name of David became well-known in all the regions. And the Lord placed the fear of him over all the nations.17 David's fame then spread to every country, and Yahweh made him feared by every nation.
