Meanwhile, Joseph was led into Egypt. And Putiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, a leader of the army, an Egyptian man, purchased him from the hand of the Ishmaelites, by whom he was brought.1 Adunque è Iosef menato in Egitto; e comperoe lui Putifar, eunuco di Faraone, principe dello esercito, uomo d'Egitto, delle mani di quelli Ismaeliti, da' quali egli era produtto.
And the Lord was with him, and he was a man who prospered in everything that he did. And he lived in the house of his lord,2 E fue lo Signore con lui; ed era uomo facente prode in ogni cosa (del signore suo); il quale abitava (ottimamente) nella casa del signore.
who knew very well that the Lord was with him, and that all the things that were done by him were directed by his hand.3 E veramente conoscea ch' era lo Signore con lui, ed ogni cosa, ch' egli facea, da lui essere dirittamente nella mano sua.
And Joseph found favor in the sight of his lord, and he ministered to him. And, having been placed in charge of everything by him, he governed the house that was entrusted to him and all the things that had been delivered to him.4 E trovò Iosef grazia innanzi al signore suo, e serviva a lui; dal quale fatto proposto, governava la credita casa, e ogni cosa che gli era data.
And the Lord blessed the house of the Egyptian, because of Joseph, and he multiplied all his substance, as much in the buildings, as in the fields.5 E benedisse lo Signore Iddio la casa di colui d'Egitto per Iosef; e moltiplicoe, così ne'capretti come ne'campi, tutta la sua sustanzia.
Neither did he know anything other than the bread that he ate. Now Joseph was beautiful in form, and stately in appearance.6 Nè altra cosa conoscea, se non lo pane che mangiava; ed era Iosef di bella faccia e di bello aspetto.
And so, after many days, his mistress cast her eyes on Joseph, and she said, “Sleep with me.”7 E dopo molti dì gittò la donna di Putifar gli occhii sopra Iosef, e disse: dormi meco.
And without consenting at all to the wicked act, he said to her: “Behold, my lord has delivered all things to me, and he does not know what he has in his own house.8 Il quale non acconsentendo all'opera fellonosa, disse a lei: ecco, lo signore mio ogni cosa m'hae dato; non sa quello ch' egli ha nella casa sua.
Neither is there anything which is not in my power, or that he has not delivered to me, except you, for you are his wife. How then can I do this evil act and sin against my God?”9 Niuna cosa è che non sia nella mia podestà, ovvero che non abbia data a me, se non tu, la quale se sua moglie. Adunque, come posso fare io questo male, e peccare nello Signore mio?
With such words as these, throughout each day, the woman was pestering the young man, and he was refusing the adultery.10 Di queste medesime parole per tutti i di la femina molestava lo garzone; ed egli recusava la fellonia.
Then it happened, on a certain day, that Joseph entered the house, and he was doing something, without any witnesses.11 Ma intervenne che alcuno die entrò loset nella casa, ed alcuna cosa di lavorio senza albitri facesse:
And she, grasping the hem of his garment, said, “Sleep with me.” But he, leaving behind the cloak in her hand, fled and went outside.12 e quella, preso lo garzone per lo ghirone del vestimento suo, dicesse: dormi meco. Il quale, lasciato il vestimento nelle sue mani, si fugge e viene fuori.
And when the woman saw the garment in her hands and herself being treated with disrespect,13 E conciosia cosa che vedesse la femina la vesta nelle mani sue, ed essere disprezzata,
she called to herself the men of her house, and she said to them: “Lo, he has brought in a Hebrew man to abuse us. He entered toward me, in order to join with me; and when I had shouted out,14 chiamò gli uomini della casa sua, e disse loro: in verità egli mandò a me l'uomo ebreo, acciò che facesse beffe di noi; e venne a me per volere usare meco; e conciosia cosa ch' io gridassi,
and he had heard my voice, he left behind the cloak that I held, and he fled outside.”15 ed egli udisse la voce mia, lasciommi lo vestire che tenea, e fuggie fuori.
As a proof, therefore, of her fidelity, she retained the cloak, and she showed it to her husband, when he returned home.16 Adunque in argomento di fede, ritenuto lo panno, mostroe al marito ritornando a casa,
And she said: “The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought in to me, approached me to abuse me.17 e disse: venne a me lo servo tuo ebreo, il quale tu menasti, acciò facesse beffe a me.
And when he had heard me cry out, he left behind the cloak that I held, and he fled outside.”18 Quando egli mi vide chiamare, lasciò lo panno, e fuggì fuori.
His lord, upon hearing these things, and having excessive trust in the words of his mate, was very angry.19 Queste cose udite lo signore, molto credette alle parole della moglie, e adirato s' è molto.
And he delivered Joseph into prison, where the prisoners of the king were kept, and he was enclosed in that place.20 E mise Iosef in prigione, dove gli prigioni dello re erano guardati; ed era quivi chiuso.
But the Lord was with Joseph, and, having mercy on him, he gave him favor in the sight of the leader of the prison,21 E fue in verità lo Signore Iddio con Josef, ed ebbe misericordia di lui, e diede a lui grazia nel cospetto del principe della carcere.
who delivered into his hand all the prisoners who were held in custody. And whatever was done, was under him.22 Il quale mise nelle mani sue tutti li prigioni che nella guardia erano tenuti; e ciò che si facea, sotto lui era.
Neither did he himself know anything, having entrusted all things to him. For the Lord was with him, and he directed everything that he did.23 Vè non sapea alcuna cosa di tutte le sue cose a lui date: in verità lo Signore Iddio era con lui, e tutte le opere sue dirizzava.
