After these things occurred, God tested Abraham, and he said to him, “Abraham, Abraham.” And he answered, “Here I am.”1 Some time after these events, God put Abraham to the test. He called to him, "Abraham!" "Ready!" he replied.
He said to him: “Take your only begotten son Isaac, whom you love, and go into the land of vision. And there you shall offer him as a holocaust upon one of the mountains, which I will show to you.”2 Then God said: "Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you."
And so Abraham, getting up in the night, harnessed his donkey, taking with him two youths, and his son Isaac. And when he had cut wood for the holocaust, he traveled toward the place, as God had instructed him.3 Early the next morning Abraham saddled his donkey, took with him his son Isaac, and two of his servants as well, and with the wood that he had cut for the holocaust, set out for the place of which God had told him.
Then, on the third day, lifting up his eyes, he saw the place at a distance.4 On the third day Abraham got sight of the place from afar.
And he said to his servants: “Wait here with the donkey. I and the boy will hurry further ahead to that place. After we have worshipped, will return to you.”5 Then he said to his servants: "Both of you stay here with the donkey, while the boy and I go on over yonder. We will worship and then come back to you."
He also took the wood for the holocaust, and he imposed it upon his son Isaac. And he himself carried in his hands fire and a sword. And as the two continued on together,6 Thereupon Abraham took the wood for the holocaust and laid it on his son Isaac's shoulders, while he himself carried the fire and the knife.
Isaac said to his father, “My father.” And he answered, “What do you want, son?” “Behold,” he said, “fire and wood. Where is the victim for the holocaust?”7 As the two walked on together, Isaac spoke to his father Abraham. "Father!" he said. "Yes, son," he replied. Isaac continued, "Here are the fire and the wood, but where is the sheep for the holocaust?"
But Abraham said, “God himself will provide the victim for the holocaust, my son.” Thus they continued on together.8 "Son," Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the sheep for the holocaust." Then the two continued going forward.
And they came to the place that God had shown to him. There he built an altar, and he set the wood in order upon it. And when he had bound his son Isaac, he laid him on the altar upon the pile of wood.9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. Next he tied up his son Isaac, and put him on top of the wood on the altar.
And he reached out his hand and took hold of the sword, in order to sacrifice his son.10 Then he reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son.
And behold, an Angel of the Lord called out from heaven, saying, “Abraham, Abraham.” And he answered, “Here I am.”11 But the LORD'S messenger called to him from heaven, "Abraham, Abraham!" "Yes, Lord," he answered.
And he said to him, “Do not extend your hand over the boy, and do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, since you have not spared your only begotten son for my sake.”12 "Do not lay your hand on the boy," said the messenger. "Do not do the least thing to him. I know now how devoted you are to God, since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son."
Abraham lifted up his eyes, and he saw behind his back a ram among the thorns, caught by the horns, which he took and offered as a holocaust, instead of his son.13 As Abraham looked about, he spied a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. So he went and took the ram and offered it up as a holocaust in place of his son.
And he called the name of that place: ‘The Lord Sees.’ Thus, even to this day, it is said: ‘On the mountain, the Lord will see.’14 Abraham named the site Yahweh-yireh; hence people now say, "On the mountain the LORD will see."
Then the Angel of the Lord called out to Abraham a second time from heaven, saying:15 Again the LORD'S messenger called to Abraham from heaven
“By my own self, I have sworn, says the Lord. Because you have done this thing, and have not spared your only begotten son for my sake,16 and said: "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your beloved son,
I will bless you, and I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven, and like the sand which is on the seashore. Your offspring will possess the gates of their enemies.17 I will bless you abundantly and make your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore; your descendants shall take possession of the gates of their enemies,
And in your offspring, all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you obeyed my voice.”18 and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing--all this because you obeyed my command.''
Abraham returned to his servants, and they went to Beersheba together, and he lived there.19 Abraham then returned to his servants, and they set out together for Beer-sheba, where Abraham made his home.
After these things occurred, it was reported to Abraham that Milcah, likewise, had borne sons for his brother Nahor:20 Some time afterward, the news came to Abraham: "Milcah too has borne sons, to your brother Nahor:
Uz, the firstborn, and Buz, his brother, and Kemuel, the father of the Syrians,21 Uz, his first-born, his brother Buz, Kemuel (the father of Aram),
and Chesed, and Hazo, likewise Pildash, and Jidlaph,22 Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel."
as well as Bethuel, of whom was born Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore for Nahor, the brother of Abraham.23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Abraham's brother Nahor.
In truth, his concubine, named Reumah, bore Tebah, and Gaham, and Tahash, and Maacah.24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore children: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
