1 And so, these things having been transacted, the word of the Lord came to Abram by a vision, saying: “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your protector, and your reward is exceedingly great.”	1 - Dopo questi avvenimenti, il Signore parlò ad Abramo in visione, e disse: «Non temere, Abramo, io sono il tuo protettore; e la tua mercede sarà grandissima».
2 And Abram said: “Lord God, what will you give to me? I may go without children. And the son of the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus.”	2 E disse Abramo: «Signore Dio, che mi darai tu? Io me n'andrò senza figli, e questo Eliezer di Damasco, figlio del procuratore della mia casa [mi succederà]».
3 And Abram added: “Yet to me you have not given offspring. And behold, my servant born in my house will be my heir.”	3 Ed aggiunse: «A me non hai dato prole, e mio erede sarà un servo nato nella mia casa».
4 And immediately the word of the Lord came to him, saying: “This one will not be your heir. But he who will come from your loins, the same will you have for your heir.”	4 Ma subito il Signore gli rispose: «Non questi sarà il tuo erede; ma uno generato da te medesimo, sarà egli l'erede».
5 And he brought him outside, and he said to him, “Take in the heavens, and number the stars, if you can.” And he said to him, “So also will your offspring be.”	5 Poi lo condusse all'aperto, e gli disse: «Guarda su in cielo, e conta le stelle, se puoi». Ed aggiunse: «Così sarà la tua discendenza».
6 Abram believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.	6 Credè Abramo a Dio, e gli fu computato a giustizia.
7 And he said to him, “I am the Lord who led you away from Ur of the Chaldeans, so as to give you this land, and so that you would possess it.”	7 Gli disse ancora il Signore: «Io sono il Signore che ti trassi da Ur de' Caldei, per darti questa terra, acciò tu la possedessi».
8 But he said, “Lord God, in what way may I be able to know that I will possess it?”	8 Ma egli domandò: «Signore Dio, da qual segno potrò io conoscere d'essere per possederla?».
9 And the Lord responded by saying: “Take for me a cow of three years, and a she-goat of three years, and a ram of three years, also a turtle-dove and a pigeon.”	9 Gli rispose il Signore: «Prendi per me una vacca di tre anni, una capra di tre anni, ed un ariete di tre anni; poi una tortora ed una colomba».
10 Taking all these, he divided them through the middle, and placed both parts opposite one another. But the birds he did not divide.	10 Presele, le divise per metà e mise le due parti una di contro all'altra [su due file]; non divise però gli uccelli.
11 And birds descended upon the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.	11 Degli uccelli rapaci scendevano a volo sulle vittime, ed Abramo li discacciava.
12 And when the sun was setting, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a dread, great and dark, invaded him.	12 Stando poi il sole per tramontare, Abramo fu preso dal sonno, ed un terrore grande e misterioso l'invase.
13 And it was said to him: “Know beforehand that your future offspring will be sojourners in a land not their own, and they will subjugate them in servitude and afflict them for four hundred years.	13 E udì dirsi: «Sappi fin d'ora che i tuoi discendenti abiteranno come stranieri in terra non loro; saranno sottoposti a schiavitù ed afflitti per quattro secoli.
14 Yet truly, I will judge the nation that they will serve, and after this they will depart with great substance.	14 Ma il popolo a cui serviranno, io lo giudicherò; poi ne verranno via con grandi ricchezze.
15 But you will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age.	15 Quanto a te, ti ricongiungerai ai tuoi padri sepolto in pace in una buona vecchiezza.
16 But in the fourth generation, they will return here. For the iniquities of the Amorites are not yet completed, even to this present time.”	16 Alla quarta generazione, [i tuoi discendenti] ritorneranno qui; perchè per ora non sono anche compiute le iniquità degli Amorrei».
17 Then, when the sun had set, there came a dark mist, and there appeared a smoking furnace and a lamp of fire passing between those divisions.	17 Quando il sole fu tramontato, si fece una caligine densa, ed apparve un rogo fumante, ed una lingua di fuoco che passava tra quelli animali divisi.
18 On that day, God formed a covenant with Abram, saying: “To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Egypt, even to the great river Euphrates:	18 In quel giorno, il Signore concluse alleanza con Abramo, e gli disse: «Darò alla tua stirpe questa terra, dal fiume d'Egitto al gran fiume Eufrate,
19 the land of the Kenites and the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites	19 coi Cinei e Cenezei, Cedmonei,
20 and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, likewise the Rephaim,	20 Etei, Ferezei, Rafaim
21 and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”	21 ed Amorrei, Cananei, Gergesei e Jebusei».
