1 Et ego, cum venissem ad vos,fratres, veni non per sublimita tem sermonis aut sapientiae annuntians vobismysterium Dei. | 1 Now when I came to you, brothers, I did not come with any brilliance of oratory or wise argument toannounce to you the mystery of God. |
2 Non enim iudicavi scire me aliquid inter vos nisi IesumChristum et hunc crucifixum. | 2 I was resolved that the only knowledge I would have while I was with you was knowledge of Jesus, andof him as the crucified Christ. |
3 Et ego in infirmitate et timore et tremore multofui apud vos, | 3 I came among you in weakness, in fear and great trembling |
4 et sermo meus et praedicatio mea non in persuasibilibussapientiae verbis sed in ostensione Spiritus et virtutis, | 4 and what I spoke and proclaimed was not meant to convince by philosophical argument, but todemonstrate the convincing power of the Spirit, |
5 ut fides vestra nonsit in sapientia hominum sed in virtute Dei. | 5 so that your faith should depend not on human wisdom but on the power of God. |
6 Sapientiam autem loquimur inter perfectos, sapientiam vero non huius saeculineque principum huius saeculi, qui destruuntur, | 6 But stil , to those who have reached maturity, we do talk of a wisdom, not, it is true, a philosophy of thisage or of the rulers of this age, who will not last long now. |
7 sed loquimur Dei sapientiam inmysterio, quae abscondita est, quam praedestinavit Deus ante saecula in gloriamnostram, | 7 It is of the mysterious wisdom of God that we talk, the wisdom that was hidden, which God predestinedto be for our glory before the ages began. |
8 quam nemo principum huius saeculi cognovit; si enim cognovissent,numquam Dominum gloriae crucifixissent. | 8 None of the rulers of the age recognised it; for if they had recognised it, they would not have crucifiedthe Lord of glory; |
9 Sed sicut scriptum est: “ Quodoculus non vidit, nec auris audivit, nec in cor hominis ascendit, quaepraeparavit Deus his, qui diligunt illum ”. | 9 but it is as scripture says: What no eye has seen and no ear has heard, what the mind of man cannotvisualise; al that God has prepared for those who love him; |
10 Nobis autem revelavit Deus per Spiritum; Spiritus enim omnia scrutatur, etiamprofunda Dei. | 10 to us, though, God has given revelation through the Spirit, for the Spirit explores the depths ofeverything, even the depths of God. |
11 Quis enim scit hominum, quae sint hominis, nisi spiritushominis, qui in ipso est? Ita et, quae Dei sunt, nemo cognovit nisi SpiritusDei. | 11 After al , is there anyone who knows the qualities of anyone except his own spirit, within him; and inthe same way, nobody knows the qualities of God except the Spirit of God. |
12 Nos autem non spiritum mundi accepimus, sed Spiritum, qui ex Deo est, utsciamus, quae a Deo donata sunt nobis; | 12 Now, the Spirit we have received is not the spirit of the world but God's own Spirit, so that we mayunderstand the lavish gifts God has given us. |
13 quae et loquimur non in doctis humanaesapientiae sed in doctis Spiritus verbis, spiritalibus spiritalia comparantes. | 13 And these are what we speak of, not in the terms learnt from human philosophy, but in terms learntfrom the Spirit, fitting spiritual language to spiritual things. |
14 Animalis autem homo non percipit, quae sunt Spiritus Dei, stultitia enim suntilli, et non potest intellegere, quia spiritaliter examinantur; | 14 The natural person has no room for the gifts of God's Spirit; to him they are folly; he cannot recognisethem, because their value can be assessed only in the Spirit. |
15 spiritalisautem iudicat omnia, et ipse a nemine iudicatur. | 15 The spiritual person, on the other hand, can assess the value of everything, and that person's valuecannot be assessed by anybody else. |
16 Quis enim cognovit sensum Domini, qui instruat eum? Nos autem sensum Christi habemus. | 16 For: who has ever known the mind of the Lord? Who has ever been his adviser? But we are thosewho have the mind of Christ. |
