1 Hearing these things, al the kings on this side of the Jordan, in the highlands and in the lowlands, allalong the coast of the Great Sea towards the Lebanon, Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites andJebusites, with one consent	1 E avendo udite tutte quante queste cose di sopra scritte, tutti quanti i re di qua dal (fiume) Giordano, i quali istavano in su i monti e ne' piani e nelle maremme, e alla riva del mare maggiore, e ancora coloro i quali abitavano al lato al Libano, cioè l' Eteo e l' Amorreo e il Cananeo e il Ferezeo e l' Eveo e il Iebuseo,
2 formed a fighting al iance against Joshua and Israel.	2 tutti insieme in uno si raunarono, acciò che combatteseno con Iosuè e con Israel, e con uno animo in una medesima sentenza.
3 When the inhabitants of Gibeon learned how Joshua had treated Jericho and Ai, for their part,	3 Ma coloro i quali abitavano in Gabaon, udendo tutte quelle cose che avea fatte Iosuè a Gerico e ad Ai,
4 they had recourse to a ruse. They provided themselves with supplies, and loaded their donkeys with oldsacks and with old wineskins which had burst and been sewn up again.	4 pensando maliziosamente, si tolsero cibi con loro, e miserli in sacchi vecchi, e puosergli in su gli asini, e otri da vino discuciti e rotti,
5 They put on patched old sandals and worn-out clothes. The only bread they took with them to eat wasdried up and crumbling.	5 e calzamenti antichissimi in piedi, i quali mostrassero, e fosse segno che fossono consumati e invecchiati per lo lungo viaggio; e i pani che portavano parevano duri (per lo lungo viaggio) ed erano tutti rotti per pezzi.
6 They came to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, and to him and the men of Israel they said, 'We come froma distant country, so make a treaty with us.'	6 E andarono a Iosuè, il quale istava allora (nell' oste e) nel campo in Galgala, e si andarono a lui e a tutti i figliuoli d' Israel con queste cose, e sì gli dissero di terra molto lungi vegnamo, desiderando di fare pace. E respuosono loro i figliuoli d' Israel:
7 The Israelites answered these Hivites, 'For all we know, you may live right among us. How then couldwe make a treaty with you?'	7 Guardate che voi forse non istiate nella terra che ci è data in sorte, e che non possiate abitare nè fare patto (nè ligamento) con esso noi.
8 They said to Joshua, 'We are your servants.' 'But who are you?' Joshua asked them, 'and where do youcome from?'	8 E' dissono a Iosuè; noi ti diciamo che noi siamo tuoi servi. Ai quali disse Iosuè: chi siete voi? e d'onde venite?
9 They said, 'Your servants have come from a country very far away, because of the fame of Yahwehyour God; for we have heard of him and of al that he did in Egypt,	9 E rispuosono, e dissono: di terra molto di lungi sono venuti i tuoi servi, in nome di Dio tuo Signore; imperciò che noi udimmo la fama della grande potenza, e tutte le cose che fece in Egitto,
10 and of al that he did to the two Amorite kings who used to live on the other side of the Jordan: Sihonking of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who used to live at Ashtaroth.	10 e a' due re degli Amorrei, di là dal (fiume) Giordano, a Seon re di Esebon e ad Og re di Basan, i quali erano in Astarot.
11 Because of which, our elders and al the people of our country said to us, "Take provisions with you forthe journey; go and meet them and say to them: We are your servants; so make a treaty with us."	11 E dissonci li nostri antichi e tutti gli abitatori della terra nostra: togliete nelle vostre mani cibi, per cagione della grande e lunga rotta (la quale avete a fare), e andate incontro a loro, e si dite: noi siamo vostri servi, fate patto con esso noi.
12 Here is our bread; it was warm when we took it from home to provide for our journey the day we setout to come to you, and now, you can see, it is dried up and crumbling.	12 Ecco; i pani, quando uscimmo fuori delle case nostre per venire a voi, caldi gli togliemmo; e ora sono fatti secchi, e per la troppo vecchiezza sono rotti (e spezzati).
13 These wineskins were new when we filled them; you can see, they have burst; and these clothes andsandals of ours are worn out from travelling such a long way.'	13 E gli otri nuovi, gli empiemmo di vino; ed ecco ora sono rotti e discuciti; i vestimenti e i calzamenti, i quali mettiamo e abbiamo in piede, per la lunghezza della lunga via sì sono rotti e (stracciati) quasi consumati.
14 The leaders sampled some of the food they offered, but they did not ask Yahweh's orders.	14 E pigliarono (i figliuoli d' Israel) delli cibi loro; e non richiesono nella bocca di Dio, che dicesse.
15 Joshua made peace with them, and struck a treaty with them guaranteeing their lives, and the leadersof the community ratified it by oath.	15 E fece Iosuè pace con loro; e fatto il patto, promise loro che non sarebbono morti; e ancora i principi, i quali erano sopra la moltitudine, sì 'l giurarono loro.
16 Now it so happened that three days after the treaty had been made, it became known that they were aneighbouring people, living in Israel's region.	16 Ma passati i tre dì, poi che fu fatto (e confermato) il patto, sì udirono ch' egli abitavano loro presso, e sì erano loro vicini, e come doveano essere tra loro.
17 The Israelites set out from camp, arriving in their towns three days later. Their towns were Gibeon,Chephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath-Jearim.	17 E mossono (l'oste e) il campo i figliuoli d'Israel, e vennero il terzo dì nelle città di costoro. E questi sono i vocaboli loro: Gabaon, Cafira e Berot e Cariatiarim.
18 The Israelites did not attack them, since the leaders of the community had sworn to them by Yahweh,God of Israel, but the whole community muttered against the leaders.	18 E non fecero male niuno, però che aveano loro giurato i principi della moltitudine nel nome di Dio Signore d' Israel. E mormorò tutto il popolo contro a' principi.
19 The leaders, however, al said to the whole community, 'Since we have sworn an oath to them byYahweh, God of Israel, we cannot touch them now.	19 E sì dissono e rispuosono loro i principi: noi giurammo loro nel nome di Dio d' Israel, e imperciò noi non gli possiamo toccare.
20 This is what we shal do with them: let them live, rather than bring retribution down on ourselves onaccount of the oath which we have sworn to them.'	20 Ma questo faremo loro: conservinsi e vivano, acciò che l'ira di Dio non si conciti (e muovasi) contra noi, se noi ci spergiurassimo.
21 And the leaders went on, 'Let them live, but let them be wood-cutters and water-carriers for the wholecommunity.' Thus spoke the leaders.	21 Ma vivano in questo modo, che loro taglino legna al bisogno di tutta quanta la moltitudine, portino l'acqua. A' quali dicendo queste parole,
22 Joshua sent for the Gibeonites and asked them, 'Why did you deceive us by saying, "We live very faraway," when in fact you live right among us?	22 chiamò Iosuè i Gabaoniti, e disse loro: perchè ci voleste ingannare di questo inganno, che molto da lungi abitiamo di voi, conciosia cosa che voi siate nel mezzo di noi?
23 From now on, you are accursed and wil for ever be serfs, as wood-cutters and water-carriers in thehouse of my God.'	23 Adunque però sarete sotto maledizione (e sotto servitudine), e non sarà niuno nella vostra città che rimanga di tagliare legna e di portare acqua nella casa di Dio nostro Signore.
24 Their answer to Joshua was, 'We did it because your servants had been rightly told that Yahweh yourGod had ordered his servant Moses to give you the whole of this country and destroy al its inhabitants beforeyou; also because, as you advanced on us, we feared very greatly for our lives. That was why we did this.	24 I quali sì rispuosono, e dissono: e' fue annunziato e detto a' servi tuoi, che Iddio tuo Signore avesse promesso a Moisè servo suo, che vi (metterebbe nelle mani e) darebbe ogni terra, e sì ucciderebbe tutti gli abitatori suoi; e imperciò noi avevamo grandissima paura, e sì provedemmo all' anime nostre, (isbigottiti e) costretti della vostra paura; e però facemmo e ordinammo questo consiglio.
25 Now, as you see, we are at your mercy; do to us whatever you think good and right.'	25 Ma ecco che ora siamo nelle tue mani; quello che ti pare buono e diritto, sì ci fa.
26 What he did with them was this: he saved them from the hand of the Israelites, who did not kil them.	26 E fece Iosuè come avea detto; e sì gli liberò delle mani de' figliuoli d' Israel, acciò che non fossono morti.
27 But that very day Joshua made them wood-cutters and water-carriers for the community and for thealtar of Yahweh, at the place which he would eventual y choose; and so they are today.	27 E sì ordinò (e determinò) quel dì, che fossono in servigio di tutto il popolo e dell' altare di Dio, tagliando legna e portando l'acqua, insino al (dì e al) tempo presente, in quello luogo che Iddio Signore eleggesse.
