NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Hearing these things, al the kings on this side of the Jordan, in the highlands and in the lowlands, allalong the coast of the Great Sea towards the Lebanon, Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites andJebusites, with one consent	1 Les rois du pays au-delà du Jourdain apprirent tout cela. Aussitôt, dans la montagne comme dans la plaine, sur la côte de la Grande Mer comme dans les environs du Liban, les Hittites, Amorites, Cananéens, Périsites, Hivvites et Jébusites
2 formed a fighting al iance against Joshua and Israel.	2 se rassemblèrent pour attaquer ensemble Josué et Israël.
3 When the inhabitants of Gibeon learned how Joshua had treated Jericho and Ai, for their part,	3 Les habitants de Gabaon savaient comment Josué avait traité Jéricho et Aï,
4 they had recourse to a ruse. They provided themselves with supplies, and loaded their donkeys with oldsacks and with old wineskins which had burst and been sewn up again.	4 ils eurent donc recours à une ruse. Ils prirent avec eux des provisions de voyage, mais c’étaient des sacs usés qu’ils mirent sur leurs ânes, des outres de vin râpées, crevées et réparées.
5 They put on patched old sandals and worn-out clothes. The only bread they took with them to eat wasdried up and crumbling.	5 Ils avaient à leurs pieds de vieilles sandales usées et rapiécées, sur eux des vêtements usagés, et le pain de leurs provisions était sec et tombait en miettes.
6 They came to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, and to him and the men of Israel they said, 'We come froma distant country, so make a treaty with us.'	6 Ils se rendirent près de Josué au camp de Guilgal, et voici ce qu’ils lui racontèrent ainsi qu’aux hommes d’Israël: “Nous venons d’un pays lointain, faites donc alliance avec nous.” Les hommes d’Israël répondirent à ces Hivvites:
7 The Israelites answered these Hivites, 'For all we know, you may live right among us. How then couldwe make a treaty with you?'	7 “Peut-être habitez-vous au milieu de nous? Comment pourrons-nous faire alors alliance avec vous?”
8 They said to Joshua, 'We are your servants.' 'But who are you?' Joshua asked them, 'and where do youcome from?'	8 Mais ils répondirent à Josué: “Nous sommes tes serviteurs!” Josué ajouta: “Qui êtes-vous et d’où venez-vous?”
9 They said, 'Your servants have come from a country very far away, because of the fame of Yahwehyour God; for we have heard of him and of al that he did in Egypt,	9 Ils répondirent: “C’est la renommée de Yahvé, ton Dieu, qui nous a fait venir d’un pays très éloigné. Nous avons entendu parler de tout ce qu’il a fait en Égypte,
10 and of al that he did to the two Amorite kings who used to live on the other side of the Jordan: Sihonking of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who used to live at Ashtaroth.	10 de tout ce qu’il a fait aux deux rois des Amorites au-delà du Jourdain, à Sihon, roi de Heshbon, et à Og, roi du Bashan, qui étaient à Achtarot.
11 Because of which, our elders and al the people of our country said to us, "Take provisions with you forthe journey; go and meet them and say to them: We are your servants; so make a treaty with us."	11 Alors nos anciens et tous les habitants de notre pays nous ont dit: Prenez avec vous des provisions pour la route, allez au-devant d’eux et dites-leur: Nous sommes vos serviteurs, faites donc alliance avec nous.
12 Here is our bread; it was warm when we took it from home to provide for our journey the day we setout to come to you, and now, you can see, it is dried up and crumbling.	12 Regardez, notre pain était encore chaud quand nous l’avons pris dans nos maisons le jour où nous nous sommes mis en route pour venir vers vous, et maintenant le voilà sec, il tombe en miettes.
13 These wineskins were new when we filled them; you can see, they have burst; and these clothes andsandals of ours are worn out from travelling such a long way.'	13 Ces outres de vin étaient neuves quand nous les avons remplies, aujourd’hui elles sont déchirées. Voyez nos vêtements et nos sandales: ils sont usés, tellement le voyage a été long.”
14 The leaders sampled some of the food they offered, but they did not ask Yahweh's orders.	14 Les hommes d’Israël partagèrent avec eux leurs provisions sans consulter l’oracle de Yahvé.
15 Joshua made peace with them, and struck a treaty with them guaranteeing their lives, and the leadersof the community ratified it by oath.	15 Josué leur donna la paix et conclut avec eux une alliance qui leur garantissait la vie sauve, après quoi, les chefs de la communauté leur prêtèrent serment.
16 Now it so happened that three days after the treaty had been made, it became known that they were aneighbouring people, living in Israel's region.	16 Mais trois jours après la conclusion de cette alliance, ils apprirent que ces gens étaient des voisins et qu’ils habitaient au milieu d’eux.
17 The Israelites set out from camp, arriving in their towns three days later. Their towns were Gibeon,Chephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath-Jearim.	17 Les Israélites se mirent en route et le troisième jour ils atteignirent leurs villes. C’étaient Gabaon, Kéfira, Béérot et Kiryat-Yéarim.
18 The Israelites did not attack them, since the leaders of the community had sworn to them by Yahweh,God of Israel, but the whole community muttered against the leaders.	18 Les Israélites ne les mirent pas à mort, car les chefs de la communauté leur avaient prêté serment au nom de Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël, mais toute la communauté murmura contre les chefs.
19 The leaders, however, al said to the whole community, 'Since we have sworn an oath to them byYahweh, God of Israel, we cannot touch them now.	19 Les chefs répondirent à la communauté: “Nous leur avons fait un serment au nom de Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël: maintenant, nous ne pouvons plus porter la main sur eux.
20 This is what we shal do with them: let them live, rather than bring retribution down on ourselves onaccount of the oath which we have sworn to them.'	20 Voici comment nous allons agir: nous les laisserons en vie pour ne pas attirer sur nous un fléau, à cause du serment que nous leur avons fait.
21 And the leaders went on, 'Let them live, but let them be wood-cutters and water-carriers for the wholecommunity.' Thus spoke the leaders.	21 Mais ils feront les corvées de toute la communauté, ils fendront le bois et iront puiser l’eau.” Voilà ce que décidèrent les chefs.
22 Joshua sent for the Gibeonites and asked them, 'Why did you deceive us by saying, "We live very faraway," when in fact you live right among us?	22 Josué les réunit et leur dit: “Pourquoi nous avoir menti? Vous avez dit que vous veniez de très loin, alors que vous habitez au milieu de nous.
23 From now on, you are accursed and wil for ever be serfs, as wood-cutters and water-carriers in thehouse of my God.'	23 Maintenant vous êtes maudits, vous serez pour toujours esclaves, vous fendrez le bois et vous puiserez l’eau pour la Maison de mon Dieu.”
24 Their answer to Joshua was, 'We did it because your servants had been rightly told that Yahweh yourGod had ordered his servant Moses to give you the whole of this country and destroy al its inhabitants beforeyou; also because, as you advanced on us, we feared very greatly for our lives. That was why we did this.	24 Ils répondirent à Josué: “On nous avait fait savoir les instructions de Yahvé, ton Dieu, à Moïse son serviteur: Yahvé vous donnerait tout le pays et vous deviez exterminer devant vous tous ses habitants. Nous avions très peur pour nos vies et c’est pourquoi nous avons agi de la sorte.
25 Now, as you see, we are at your mercy; do to us whatever you think good and right.'	25 Maintenant nous sommes entre tes mains, traite-nous comme cela te paraîtra bon et juste.”
26 What he did with them was this: he saved them from the hand of the Israelites, who did not kil them.	26 Josué ne les livra donc pas aux Israélites, ils ne furent pas mis à mort,
27 But that very day Joshua made them wood-cutters and water-carriers for the community and for thealtar of Yahweh, at the place which he would eventual y choose; and so they are today.	27 mais dès ce jour ils durent fendre le bois et puiser l’eau pour la communauté, pour l’autel de Yahvé, dans le lieu que lui-même devait choisir. Ils le font encore.
