Paul, cal ed by the wil of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and Sosthenes, our brother,1 Paul, called as an Apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God; and Sosthenes, a brother:
to the church of God in Corinth, to those who have been consecrated in Christ Jesus and cal ed to beGod's holy people, with al those everywhere who cal on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord as wel asours.2 to the Church of God which is at Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints with all who are invoking the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place of theirs and of ours.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
I am continual y thanking God about you, for the grace of God which you have been given in ChristJesus;4 I give thanks to my God continuously for you because of the grace of God that has been given to you in Christ Jesus.
in him you have been richly endowed in every kind of utterance and knowledge;5 By that grace, in all things, you have become wealthy in him, in every word and in all knowledge.
so firmly has witness to Christ taken root in you.6 And so, the testimony of Christ has been strengthened in you.
And so you are not lacking in any gift as you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed;7 In this way, nothing is lacking to you in any grace, as you await the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
he will continue to give you strength till the very end, so that you will be irreproachable on the Day ofour Lord Jesus Christ.8 And he, too, will strengthen you, even until the end, without guilt, until the day of the advent of our Lord Jesus Christ.
You can rely on God, who has called you to be partners with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.9 God is faithful. Through him, you have been called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Brothers, I urge you, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, not to have factions among yourselves butal to be in agreement in what you profess; so that you are perfectly united in your beliefs and judgements.10 And so, I beg you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that every one of you speak in the same way, and that there be no schisms among you. So may you become perfect, with the same mind and with the same judgment.
From what Chloe's people have been telling me about you, brothers, it is clear that there are seriousdifferences among you.11 For it has been indicated to me, about you, my brothers, by those who are with Chloes, that there are contentions among you.
What I mean is this: every one of you is declaring, 'I belong to Paul,' or 'I belong to Apollos,' or 'Ibelong to Cephas,' or 'I belong to Christ.'12 Now I say this because each of you is saying: “Certainly, I am of Paul;” “But I am of Apollo;” “Truly, I am of Cephas;” as well as: “I am of Christ.”
Has Christ been split up? Was it Paul that was crucified for you, or was it in Paul's name that you werebaptised?13 Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
I am thankful I did not baptise any of you, except Crispus and Gaius,14 I give thanks to God that I have baptized none of you, except Crispus and Gaius,
so that no one can say that you were baptised in my name.15 lest anyone say that you have been baptized in my name.
Yes, I did baptise the family of Stephanas, too; but besides these I do not think I baptised anyone.16 And I also baptized the household of Stephanus. Other than these, I do not recall if I baptized any others.
After al , Christ sent me not to baptise, but to preach the gospel; and not by means of wisdom oflanguage, wise words which would make the cross of Christ pointless.17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to evangelize: not through the wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ become empty.
The message of the cross is fol y for those who are on the way to ruin, but for those of us who are onthe road to salvation it is the power of God.18 For the Word of the Cross is certainly foolishness to those who are perishing. But to those who have been saved, that is, to us, it is the power of God.
As scripture says: I am going to destroy the wisdom of the wise and bring to nothing theunderstanding of any who understand.19 For it has been written: “I will perish the wisdom of the wise, and I will reject the discernment of the prudent.”
Where are the philosophers? Where are the experts? And where are the debaters of this age? Do younot see how God has shown up human wisdom as fol y?20 Where are the wise? Where are the scribes? Where are the truth-seekers of this age? Has not God made the wisdom of this world into foolishness?
Since in the wisdom of God the world was unable to recognise God through wisdom, it was God's ownpleasure to save believers through the fol y of the gospel.21 For the world did not know God through wisdom, and so, in the wisdom of God, it pleased God to accomplish the salvation of believers, through the foolishness of our preaching.
While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks look for wisdom,22 For the Jews ask for signs, and the Greeks seek wisdom.
we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle they cannot get over, to the gentilesfoolishness,23 But we are preaching Christ crucified. Certainly, to the Jews, this is a scandal, and to the Gentiles, this is foolishness.
but to those who have been cal ed, whether they are Jews or Greeks, a Christ who is both the powerof God and the wisdom of God.24 But to those who have been called, Jews as well as Greeks, the Christ is the virtue of God and the wisdom of God.
God's fol y is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength.25 For what is foolishness to God is considered wise by men, and that which is weakness to God is considered strong by men.
Consider, brothers, how you were cal ed; not many of you are wise by human standards, not manyinfluential, not many from noble families.26 So take care of your vocation, brothers. For not many are wise according to the flesh, not many are powerful, not many are noble.
No, God chose those who by human standards are fools to shame the wise; he chose those who byhuman standards are weak to shame the strong,27 But God has chosen the foolish of the world, so that he may confound the wise. And God has chosen the weak of the world, so that he may confound the strong.
those who by human standards are common and contemptible -- indeed those who count for nothing-- to reduce to nothing al those that do count for something,28 And God has chosen the ignoble and contemptible of the world, those who are nothing, so that he may reduce to nothing those who are something.
so that no human being might feel boastful before God.29 So then, nothing that is of the flesh should glory in his sight.
It is by him that you exist in Christ Jesus, who for us was made wisdom from God, and saving justiceand holiness and redemption.30 But you are of him in Christ Jesus, who was made by God to be our wisdom and justice and sanctification and redemption.
As scripture says: If anyone wants to boast, let him boast of the Lord.31 And so, in the same way, it was written: “Whoever glories, should glory in the Lord.”
