1 'My brothers, my fathers, listen to what I have to say to you in my defence.'	1 Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez ce que j'ai à vous dire maintenant pour ma défense.
2 When they realised he was speaking in Hebrew, the silence was even greater than before.	2 Quand ils entendirent qu'il leur parlait en langue hébraïque, ils firent encore plus de silence.
3 'I am a Jew', Paul said, 'and was born at Tarsus in Cilicia. I was brought up here in this city. It wasunder Gamaliel that I studied and was taught the exact observance of the Law of our ancestors. In fact, I was asful of duty towards God as you al are today.	3 Et il dit: Je suis Juif, né à Tarse en Cilicie; mais j'ai été élevé dans cette ville-ci, instruit aux pieds de Gamaliel dans la connaissance de la loi de nos pères, zélé pour cette loi, comme vous l'êtes tous aujourd'hui.
4 I even persecuted this Way to the death and sent women as wel as men to prison in chains	4 J'ai persécuté cette secte jusqu'à la mort, enchaînant et mettant en prison hommes et femmes,
5 as the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify. I even received letters from them to thebrothers in Damascus, which I took with me when I set off to bring prisoners back from there to Jerusalem forpunishment.	5 ainsi que le grand prêtre et tous les anciens m'en rendent témoignage; ayant reçu d'eux des lettres pour les frères, j'allais à Damas pour amener prisonniers à Jérusalem ceux qui étaient là, afin qu'ils fussent punis.
6 'It happened that I was on that journey and nearly at Damascus when in the middle of the day a brightlight from heaven suddenly shone round me.	6 Mais il arriva, tandis que j'étais en chemin et que j'approchais de Damas au milieu du jour, que tout à coup une lumière abondante, qui venait du Ciel, brilla autour de moi;
7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"	7 et tombant à terre, j'entendis une voix qui me disait: Saul, Saul, pourquoi Me persécutes-tu?
8 I answered, "Who are you, Lord?" and he said to me, "I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you arepersecuting."	8 Je répondis: Qui êtes-vous, Seigneur? Il me dit: Je suis Jésus de Nazareth, que tu persécutes.
9 The people with me saw the light but did not hear the voice which spoke to me.	9 Ceux qui étaient avec moi virent bien la lumière, mais ils n'entendirent pas la voix de Celui qui me parlait.
10 I said, "What am I to do, Lord?" The Lord answered, "Get up and go into Damascus, and there youwil be told what you have been appointed to do."	10 Alors je dis: Que ferai-je, Seigneur? Et le Seigneur me dit: Lève-toi, et va à Damas; et là on te dira tout ce que tu dois faire.
11 Since the light had been so dazzling that I was blind, I got to Damascus only because my companionsled me by the hand.	11 Et comme je ne voyais point, à cause du grand éclat de cette lumière, mes compagnons me prirent par la main, et me menèrent à Damas.
12 'Someone called Ananias, a devout fol ower of the Law and highly thought of by al the Jews livingthere,	12 Or un certain Ananie, homme selon la loi, à qui tous les Juifs demeurant à Damas rendaient témoignage,
13 came to see me; he stood beside me and said, "Brother Saul, receive your sight." Instantly my sightcame back and I was able to see him.	13 vint me trouver, et s'approchant, me dit: Saul, mon frère, regarde. Et au même instant je le vis.
14 Then he said, "The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will, to see the Upright One andhear his own voice speaking,	14 Alors il dit: Le Dieu de nos pères t'a prédestiné pour connaître Sa volonté, pour voir le Juste et pour entendre les paroles de Sa bouche;
15 because you are to be his witness before all humanity, testifying to what you have seen and heard.	15 car tu seras Son témoin devant les hommes, témoin de ce que tu as vu et entendu.
16 And now why delay? Hurry and be baptised and wash away your sins, cal ing on his name."	16 Et maintenant que tardes-tu? Lève-toi, et reçois le baptême, et lave tes péchés en invoquant Son nom.
17 'It happened that, when I got back to Jerusalem, and was praying in the Temple, I fell into a trance	17 Or il arriva qu'étant revenu à Jérusalem et priant dans le temple, j'eus un ravissement d'esprit,
18 and then I saw him. "Hurry," he said, "leave Jerusalem at once; they wil not accept the testimony you are giving about me."	18 et je Le vis qui me disait: Hâte-toi, et sors promptement de Jérusalem; car ils ne recevront pas le témoignage que tu rendras de Moi.
19 "Lord," I answered, "they know that I used to go from synagogue to synagogue, imprisoning andflogging those who believed in you;	19 Et je dis: Seigneur, ils savent eux-mêmes que je faisais enfermer en prison et fouetter dans les synagogues ceux qui croyaient en Vous;
20 and that when the blood of your witness Stephen was being shed, I, too, was standing by, in fullagreement with his murderers, and in charge of their clothes."	20 et que, lorsqu'on répandait le sang d'Etienne, Votre témoin, j'étais présent et j'y consentais, et je gardais les vêtements de ceux qui le tuaient.
21 Then he said to me, "Go! I am sending you out to the gentiles far away." '	21 Il me dit: Va, car Je t'enverrai au loin chez les nations.
22 So far they had listened to him, but at these words they began to shout, 'Rid the earth of the man! Heis not fit to live!'	22 Ils l'avaient écouté jusqu'à ce mot; mais alors ils élevèrent leurs voix, disant: Ote de la terre un pareil homme, car il n'est pas digne de vivre.
23 They were yel ing, waving their cloaks and throwing dust into the air,	23 Comme ils vociféraient, et jetaient leurs vêtements, et lançaient la poussière en l'air,
24 and so the tribune had him brought into the fortress and ordered him to be examined under the lash,to find out the reason for the outcry against him.	24 le tribun ordonna de le conduire dans la forteresse, et de le battre de verges, et de le torturer, afin de savoir pour quel motif ils criaient ainsi contre lui.
25 But when they had strapped him down Paul said to the centurion on duty, 'Is it legal for you to flog aman who is a Roman citizen and has not been brought to trial?'	25 Quand on l'eut lié avec des courroies, Paul dit au centurion qui était présent: Vous est-il permis de flageller un citoyen romain, qui n'a pas même été condamné?
26 When he heard this the centurion went and told the tribune; 'Do you realise what you are doing?' hesaid. 'This man is a Roman citizen.'	26 Ayant entendu cela, le centurion s'approcha du tribun, et lui dit: Que vas-tu faire? car cet homme est citoyen romain.
27 So the tribune came and asked him, 'Tel me, are you a Roman citizen?' Paul answered 'Yes'.	27 Le tribun s'approchant lui demanda: Dis-moi si tu es citoyen romain? Et il dit: Oui.
28 To this the tribune replied, 'It cost me a large sum to acquire this citizenship.' 'But I was born to it,'said Paul.	28 Le tribun reprit: Moi, c'est avec beaucoup d'argent que j'ai acquis ce droit de cité. Et Paul dit: Et moi, je l'ai par ma naissance.
29 Then those who were about to examine him hurriedly withdrew, and the tribune himself was alarmedwhen he realised that he had put a Roman citizen in chains.	29 Aussitôt donc ceux qui devaient le torturer se retirèrent; le tribun même eut peur, lorsqu'il eut appris que Paul était citoyen romain, et qu'il l'avait fait lier.
30 The next day, since he wanted to know for sure what charge the Jews were bringing, he freed Pauland gave orders for a meeting of the chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin; then he brought Paul down and sethim in front of them.	30 Le jour suivant, voulant savoir plus exactement de quoi il était accusé par les Juifs, il lui fit ôter ses liens; puis ayant ordonné que les prêtres et tout le conseil s'assemblassent, et amenant Paul, il le plaça au milieu d'eux.
