NEW JERUSALEMGREEK BIBLE
Passing through Amphipolis and Apol onia, they eventual y reached Thessalonica, where there was aJewish synagogue.1 Διοδευσαντες δε την Αμφιπολιν και Απολλωνιαν, ηλθαν εις Θεσσαλονικην, οπου ητο η συναγωγη των Ιουδαιων.
Paul as usual went in and for three consecutive Sabbaths developed the arguments from scripture forthem,2 Και κατα την συνηθειαν του ο Παυλος εισηλθε προς αυτους, και τρια σαββατα διελεγετο μετ' αυτων απο των γραφων,
explaining and proving how it was ordained that the Christ should suffer and rise from the dead. 'Andthe Christ', he said, 'is this Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you.'3 εξηγων και αποδεικνυων οτι επρεπε να παθη ο Χριστος και να αναστηθη εκ νεκρων και οτι ουτος ειναι ο Χριστος Ιησους, τον οποιον εγω σας κηρυττω.
Some of them were convinced and joined Paul and Silas, and so did a great many godfearing peopleand Greeks, as wel as a number of the leading women.4 Και τινες εξ αυτων επεισθησαν και ηνωθησαν μετα του Παυλου και του Σιλα, και εκ των θεοσεβων Ελληνων πολυ πληθος και εκ των πρωτων γυναικων ουκ ολιγαι.
The Jews, ful of resentment, enlisted the help of a gang from the market place, stirred up a crowd, andsoon had the whole city in an uproar. They made for Jason's house, hoping to bring them before the People'sAssembly;5 Φθονησαντες δε οι μη πειθομενοι Ιουδαιοι και λαβοντες μεθ' εαυτων κακους τινας ανθρωπους εκ των χυδαιων και οχλαγωγησαντες, εθορυβουν την πολιν και εφορμησαντες εις την οικιαν του Ιασονος, εζητουν αυτους δια να φερωσιν εις τον δημον?
however, they found only Jason and some of the brothers, and these they dragged before the citycouncil, shouting, 'The people who have been turning the whole world upside down have come here now;6 μη ευροντες δε αυτους, εσυραν τον Ιασονα και τινας αδελφους επι τους πολιταρχας, βοωντες οτι οι αναστατωσαντες την οικουμενην, ουτοι ηλθον και εδω,
they have been staying at Jason's. They have broken Caesar's edicts by claiming that there is anotherking, Jesus.'7 τους οποιους υπεδεχθη ο Ιασων? και παντες ουτοι πραττουσιν εναντιον των προσταγματων του Καισαρος, λεγοντες οτι ειναι βασιλευς αλλος, ο Ιησους.
Hearing this, the citizens and the city council ors were alarmed,8 Εταραξαν δε τον οχλον και τους πολιταρχας ακουοντας ταυτα,
and they made Jason and the rest give security before setting them free.9 και λαβοντες εγγυησιν παρα του Ιασονος και των λοιπων, απελυσαν αυτους.
When it was dark the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away to Beroea, where they went tothe Jewish synagogue as soon as they arrived.10 Οι δε αδελφοι ευθυς δια της νυκτος εξεπεμψαν τον τε Παυλον και τον Σιλαν εις Βεροιαν, οιτινες ελθοντες υπηγον εις την συναγωγην των Ιουδαιων.
Here the Jews were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they welcomed the wordvery readily; every day they studied the scriptures to check whether it was true.11 Ουτοι δε ησαν ευγενεστεροι παρα τους εν Θεσσαλονικη, καθοτι εδεχθησαν τον λογον μετα πασης προθυμιας, εξεταζοντες καθ' ημεραν τας γραφας αν ουτως εχωσι ταυτα.
Many of them became believers, and so did many Greek women of high standing and a number ofthe men.12 Πολλοι μεν λοιπον εξ αυτων επιστευσαν, και εκ των επισημων Ελληνιδων γυναικων και εκ των ανδρων ουκ ολιγοι.
When the Jews of Thessalonica came to learn that the word of God was being preached by Paul inBeroea as wel , they went there to make trouble and stir up the people.13 Ως δε εμα0ον οι απο της Θεσσαλονικης Ιουδαιοι οτι και εν τη Βεροια εκηρυχθη υπο του Παυλου ο λογος του Θεου, ηλθον και εκει και εταραττον τους οχλους.
So the brothers arranged for Paul to go immediately as far as the coast, leaving Silas and Timothybehind.14 Και ευθυς τοτε οι αδελφοι εξαπεστειλαν τον Παυλον να υπαγη εως εις την θαλασσαν? ο Σιλας δε και ο Τιμοθεος εμειναν εκει.
Paul's escort took him as far as Athens, and went back with instructions for Silas and Timothy torejoin Paul as soon as they could.15 Οι δε συνοδευοντες τον Παυλον εφεραν αυτον εως Αθηνων, και αφου ελαβον παραγγελιαν προς τον Σιλαν και Τιμοθεον να ελθωσι προς αυτον οσον ταχιστα, ανεχωρησαν.
Paul waited for them in Athens and there his whole soul was revolted at the sight of a city given overto idolatry.16 Ενω δε περιεμενεν αυτους ο Παυλος εν ταις Αθηναις, το πνευμα αυτου παρωξυνετο εν αυτω, επειδη εβλεπε την πολιν γεμουσαν ειδωλων.
In the synagogue he debated with the Jews and the godfearing, and in the market place he debatedevery day with anyone whom he met.17 Διελεγετο λοιπον εν τη συναγωγη μετα των Ιουδαιων και μετα των θεοσεβων και εν τη αγορα καθ' εκαστην ημεραν μετα των τυχοντων.
Even a few Epicurean and Stoic philosophers argued with him. Some said, 'What can this parrotmean?' And, because he was preaching about Jesus and Resurrection, others said, 'He seems to be apropagandist for some outlandish gods.'18 Τινες δε των Επικουριων και των Στωικων φιλοσοφων συνηρχοντο εις λογους μετ' αυτου, και οι μεν ελεγον? Τι θελει ταχα ο σπερμολογος ουτος να ειπη; οι δε? Ξενων θεων κηρυξ φαινεται οτι ειναι? διοτι εκηρυττε προς αυτους τον Ιησουν και την αναστασιν.
They got him to accompany them to the Areopagus, where they said to him, 'Can we know what thisnew doctrine is that you are teaching?19 Και πιασαντες αυτον εφεραν εις τον Αρειον Παγον, λεγοντες? Δυναμεθα να μαθωμεν τις αυτη η νεα διδαχη, ητις κηρυττεται υπο σου;
Some of the things you say seemed startling to us and we would like to find out what they mean.'20 διοτι φερεις εις τας ακοας ημων παραδοξα τινα? θελομεν λοιπον να μαθωμεν τι σημαινουσι ταυτα.
The one amusement the Athenians and the foreigners living there seem to have is to discuss andlisten to the latest ideas.21 Παντες δε οι Αθηναιοι και οι επιδημουντες ξενοι εις ουδεν αλλο ηυκαιρουν παρα εις το να λεγωσι και να ακουωσι τι νεωτερον.
So Paul stood before the whole council of the Areopagus and made this speech: 'Men of Athens, Ihave seen for myself how extremely scrupulous you are in all religious matters,22 Σταθεις δε ο Παυλος εν μεσω του Αρειου Παγου, ειπεν? Ανδρες Αθηναιοι, κατα παντα σας βλεπω εις ακρον θεολατρας.
because, as I strol ed round looking at your sacred monuments, I noticed among other things an altarinscribed: To An Unknown God. In fact, the unknown God you revere is the one I proclaim to you.23 Διοτι ενω διηρχομην και ανεθεωρουν τα σεβασματα σας, ευρον και βωμον, εις τον οποιον ειναι επιγεγραμμενον, Αγνωστω Θεω. Εκεινον λοιπον, τον οποιον αγνοουντες λατρευετε, τουτον εγω κηρυττω προς εσας.
'Since the God who made the world and everything in it is himself Lord of heaven and earth, he doesnot make his home in shrines made by human hands.24 Ο Θεος, οστις εκαμε τον κοσμον και παντα τα εν αυτω, ουτος Κυριος ων του ουρανου και της γης, δεν κατοικει εν χειροποιητοις ναοις,
Nor is he in need of anything, that he should be served by human hands; on the contrary, it is he whogives everything -- including life and breath -- to everyone.25 ουδε λατρευεται υπο χειρων ανθρωπων ως εχων χρειαν τινος, επειδη αυτος διδει εις παντας ζωην και πνοην και τα παντα?
From one single principle he not only created the whole human race so that they could occupy theentire earth, but he decreed the times and limits of their habitation.26 και εκαμεν εξ ενος αιματος παν εθνος ανθρωπων, δια να κατοικωσιν εφ' ολου του προσωπου της γης, και διωρισε τους προδιατεταγμενους καιρους και τα οροθεσια της κατοικιας αυτων,
And he did this so that they might seek the deity and, by feeling their way towards him, succeed infinding him; and indeed he is not far from any of us,27 δια να ζητωσι τον Κυριον, ισως δυνηθωσι να ψηλαφησωσιν αυτον και να ευρωσιν, αν και δεν ειναι μακραν απο ενος εκαστου ημων.
since it is in him that we live, and move, and exist, as indeed some of your own writers have said: Weare al his children.28 Διοτι εν αυτω ζωμεν και κινουμεθα και υπαρχομεν, καθως και τινες των ποιητων σας ειπον? Διοτι και γενος ειμεθα τουτου.
'Since we are the children of God, we have no excuse for thinking that the deity looks like anything ingold, silver or stone that has been carved and designed by a man.29 Γενος λοιπον οντες του Θεου, δεν πρεπει να νομιζωμεν τον Θεον οτι ειναι ομοιος με χρυσον η αργυρον η λιθον, κεχαραγμενα δια τεχνης και επινοιας ανθρωπου.
'But now, overlooking the times of ignorance, God is tel ing everyone everywhere that they mustrepent,30 Τους καιρους λοιπον της αγνοιας παραβλεψας ο Θεος, τωρα παραγγελλει εις παντας τους ανθρωπους πανταχου να μετανοωσι,
because he has fixed a day when the whole world will be judged in uprightness by a man he hasappointed. And God has publicly proved this by raising him from the dead.'31 διοτι προσδιωρισεν ημεραν εν η μελλει να κρινη την οικουμενην εν δικαιοσυνη, δια ανδρος τον οποιον διωρισε, και εδωκεν εις παντας βεβαιωσιν περι τουτου, αναστησας αυτον εκ νεκρων.
At this mention of rising from the dead, some of them burst out laughing; others said, 'We would liketo hear you talk about this another time.'32 Ακουσαντες δε αναστασιν νεκρων, οι μεν εχλευαζον, οι δε ειπον? Περι τουτου θελομεν σε ακουσει παλιν.
After that Paul left them,33 Και ουτως ο Παυλος εξηλθεν εκ μεσου αυτων.
but there were some who attached themselves to him and became believers, among them Dionysiusthe Aeropagite and a woman cal ed Damaris, and others besides.34 Τινες δε ανδρες προσεκολληθησαν εις αυτον και επιστευσαν, μεταξυ των οποιων ητο και Διονυσιος ο Αρεοπαγιτης και γυνη τις ονοματι Δαμαρις και αλλοι μετ' αυτων.
